lionessofthestars.
She gave a soft rumble, ears flicking back and forth as she came to her own conclusions. Antok certainly seemed more inclined towards the darker, more unpleasant side of hypothesizing. A good trait for a second in command, for someone who’s entire task revolved around supporting and looking out for the little Bear. It always was good to have a pair of eyes looking in areas you would not. It’s why prides were so effective, it’s why she valued her more much more wary sisters so much, as annoying as they were sometimes with their caution. Still, there were a few… flaws with his argument.
{Well, I can assure you that the cubs did not kill anyone to receive the blade. My sibling would have immediately relayed such thing if her cub had. The only cub that’s killed another living, sentient being is my own. The little Dragon has only killed venomous creatures of his homeworld and other pests.}  She plunked her forehead down against one of his knees, rubbing it back and forth. She didn’t want to get up to do the same for under his chin, but she did want to convey some affection.
{Red has been in his brain plenty of times, and we have all had our share of… accidental incursions into the brain-pans of all the cubs while we are sharing a mind during the more… strenuous battles. They are not that good at mental shielding yet. Take some comfort in the knowledge that he did not kill one of your own. I rather doubt they five of them could, even together. They had issues handling your lithe brother- the Small Cockatiel. Besides, they were entirely planet-bound until my sister Blue… ah… took them on a surprise trip with naught but the clothes on their backs.}
Out of the five of them, Red certainly had shared Keith’s brain-space the most, although even they shielded some things from the rest of the pride. Not uncommon, she did much the same with her own cub. There were some nightmares and private moments that the younger cubs didn’t need to be privy too. She’d done it for all of her previous pilots, until they had mastered it themselves. It was a skill that came with time and practice, and they certainly needed more of both.
{As to the matter of having kits… There will always be dangers… To some it would be cowardice, being too afraid of losing something to not even try to have it. War and turmoil are not new things to this universe, and kits have been brought into this universe in all kinds of inclement weather. As to the gifting of the knife, well, I can think of one reason a dam would ignore them. Possibly two.}
Her words alone about sharing a mental connection with the other lions were enough to appease him and push out the thought that one of their own was killed by the children — though it left a foul taste in Antok’s mouth right afterwards. That meant that the blade was intentionally given. There was no way that a mere child fresh into the world would be able to kill its birthgiver, unless she had died during childbirth. A perfectly reasonable assumption... he doesn’t know how human and galra genes work together. For all he knew, the combination could have killed the birthgiver.
Antok directs his attention back down to the lion, listening to her speak. While doing so, he began to wrack his own brain for reasons as to why the Marmoran in question would disobey orders deliberately like that.
Curious indeed, he thinks, yet part of him is inclined to not think into it more than he already has. “What reasons do you suppose that will be?” He asks her, a deep scowl on his face as he does. “I see no reason. The rules of this sort of trust are made absolutely clear when undergoing the trials. They put their lives on the line for this. Why someone would give up what they risked their life for when they knew the consequences... do enlighten me if you know.”

As much as he didn’t like the situation, there were times and places to take measures that go against one’s comfort zone, now was one of those times. As much as it strained him, as much as it went against everything he was used to. He didn’t spend all this time finding them to leave now. Putting his hand forward to show his submission, he lowered himself down to a kneel.
“I am Commander Reson of the Galra empire, and I’ve come to request the aid of the Blades.”
Tumblr media
He’s a bit shocked when the commander kneels, yet he doesn’t let his guard down. This was a ruse, Antok thought. His eyes scanned the visible perimeter for any movement, his ears remained open. There was no way that this commander came here completely alone, completely unarmed.
What he said baffled Antok further, and it only served to make his shoulders rise and tense up. Not only did this confirm the fact that the Empire certainly knew of the Blade, but one of the commanders himself was seeking them out. A terrible feeling of foreboding loomed over Antok.
“ And why should I not end you where you kneel? ”  He snaps out, tail lashing impatiently.  “ Speak quickly. ”

Her eyes are downcast and she chews at her lip for a moment before meeting his eyes, her brow furrowed, a facade of confidence bleeding into her voice.
Tumblr media
“ Not as well as I had hoped. The slaves we have been tracking are being taken to a nearby smelting compound, one of the major suppliers of armor for the Empire. To sabotage it would mean a major loss in their production, but I worry for the civilians…”
He makes a noise — disgust, as it were. It was to be expected, however, and he quickly brushes off that disgust in favor of crossing his arms and staring at her impassively.
Tumblr media
“ We’ve no time to be worried about such trivial subjects. ”  Antok tells her flatly, letting out a low grumble afterwards.  “ We sabotage their operations. Cause a disruption among their ranks and cause them to scramble among themselves. If the slaves have a mind, they will escape through the fray and go into hiding. We cannot afford to save them, you know this. ”

“ I suppose I have to admire your optimism in a difficult time. It’s... intriguing. ”  Antok comments as he thinks more about what he has to say about Belvos.
“ You don’t seem to let things get to you very easily, or at least from what I have seen. A tough hide is required for most everything, if not everything by itself. That, and... you’re rather eager for a recruit, and quite adaptable in the same breath. I’m honestly impressed. ”

A scoff leaves him. What hasn’t he already said? What wasn’t already obvious?
“ Competence, experience, quick decisions. To name off a few very briefly — as if I need to go into depth as to why those things in particular. ”  His bias towards the ex-commander was glaringly obvious, and though it may have seemed incredibly controversial when being viewed from an outside party like the Paladins or another Marmoran, Antok had decided to look upon it with an open mind and open eyes. Dwelling on what happened in the past was just moronic, and a differing opinion was always welcome, in comparison to everything and everyone else.

“Ten chances to stop complaining? Isn’t that generous of you, usually I only get three,” the Dreian grinned.
“It’s like you said, perhaps they’re adaptable on their planet, but from what I’ve seen, none of them have BEEN to a planet with potentially deadly atmospheric conditions. Unless they’re somehow like the Alteans and can sprout thick fur when they need to (unlikely), then they won’t last long outside where we’re going. They’ll probably head inside before I do~”
Tumblr media
“You said your homeworld was cold and dark? I’ve had several missions on worlds like that. On one of them, the electromagnetic fields of the planet actually disabled my navtool and I ended up getting lost and having to take shelter in a cave,” he gave a brief laugh. “…That was… not a proud moment for me, snowstorm and equipment malfunction or not.”
“ Yes, I believe I am being quite generous about it. ”  He states in a rather matter of fact tone, chuckling a bit afterwards.  “ Being honest, I would expect you to use up the first three chances within the first few minutes of being there. But, who knows. ”
Antok hums a bit — he didn’t doubt Haxus for a second, considering what he’d just said.  “ I won’t bother making a bet on that. We all know it will happen. ”  It was almost a bit pathetic, really. Normally, he would be making bets with himself based on who of the Marmorans would complain first about the conditions of a planet and their inability to adapt very well, yet he knew for a fact that the Paladins.. were not impressively adaptable creatures.
Tumblr media
“ Indeed it is. ”  Antok answers briefly.  “ Or, at least, what I remember of it. Always overcast with clouds, blustery and rarely ever free of a blizzard. ”  However, he turns his head towards Haxus, snorting.  “ At least you had the brains to take shelter instead of looking for civilization and subjecting yourself to hypothermia. Though, I am inclinded to ask how you lived. ”

☆ ɢᴜᴀʀᴅɪᴀɴ ᴏᴈ ᴛʜᴇ ᴈᴏʀᴇᴤᴛ ☆
“For the millionth time, I’m not a child. I’m a paladin!” By now, the remark is said more with more grouse than complete affront. Fury only lasted so long against rigorous repetition before it simmered into simple frustration. Her vexation fit well with the after-school-time-specialesque spiel Antok gave about growing, too, so there’s not much more of a raise out of her besides the additional eye-roll. She wanted to hear the same lecture her mom gave her a hundred times over about as much as she wanted to brood even more over current events, so when Antok segues from his dietary rant to his doubts about the Black Lion, Pidge sighs quietly to herself. Her everything was sore just from the thought of how convoluted things were becoming. If anything, she’d like to just ignore the giant mess they were all tangled in while she could.
Let herself breath and brain not work itself into overwhelmed mush.
Of course, with a young mind like hers, she figured the best solution was just to, say, figuratively shove everything under the metaphorical bed and not bother with any of it until later. Preferably through play. “You know, I think I actually have another way to ‘alleviate my height problem’ that bypasses any of your suggestions.”
Tumblr media
Purposely leaving out any explanation, she positioned her right at his side with a short shuffle. Arms raise up before fingers curl around Antok belts, and the girl starts to shimmy up Antok. Through enough grunting and squirming, she’s sitting up on the giant’s shoulders with a smug smirk—not that Antok could necessarily see. Although, he should hear it well enough given her absolutely delighted voice. “There! Problem solved, and with plenty of time to spare.” Again, not as if Antok would ever see, she patents her boasting by wiggling her Matt’s* [unnecessary] glasses. “Impressive, huh?”
He sighs instinctively right after she stated that she was a Paladin, not a child for the umpteenth time since he’s met her. It had become second nature by now. Her body language always told Antok that she was just an unruly child, as redundant as it had become by now to say the same thing over and over again.
Antok perks up a bit when she had mentioned that she had an alternate way to solve her height problems. Impossible, he wanted to say immediately, yet was quick enough to hold his tongue. His tail sways off to the side, an ‘oh?’ sound leaving him as it does. This should be a good one. There was no way that someone could alter their physical appearance, unless it was with a cloaking device of sorts. But then again, that would require so many resources... and would likely be incredibly expensive in the long-run. How could she have gotten her hands on something like that? Unless she stole it.
He hardly registers the fact that she was clambering up his body, until her head was just barely under his chin. That had also become a common occurrence — that she would just use him as a personal perch. It hardly bothered him, though he was certain that the others knew that he would throw them to the floor if they tried to do what Pidge did just now.
Once she was seated on his shoulders ( and he was fully paying attention by now ), he could indeed hear the smirk in her voice when she announced her victory. Antok was well-aware of the fact that she could just scale his body and perch on his shoulders any time she wanted outside of battle, he should have expected such a solution from the Green Paladin.
Though, he hadn’t, and he actually laughs for a few seconds.
Tumblr media
“Indeed you have solved your problems.” Antok answers her, tilting his head upwards as much as he could to be able to look up at her. “You have even caught me off-guard. Congratulations.”

“ You’ve the compassion the Paladins could ever hope to have. That is something you should hold on to — it isn’t often that you find someone of your type. Not only that, but you’re quite an intelligent being for someone in this current time and age. That, and... you seem to care so much for others, though you might not have known them for all that long. While that is admirable, I’ll ask you to exercise caution in who you extend that kindness towards. You won’t know who might take advantage of it. ”

“ ... aside from what is obvious from a glance, you’re surprisingly pleasant enough to speak with... when you’re not complaining about something inane, I mean. Not only that, but you have experience, and you know what you’re doing — no floundering around on your part. As I would expect, anyways.
I would hate to have to airlock you if you were to make a stupid mistake. ”

He sits hunched over, reminiscing. A lot of things came to be during his time here, after being brought in. He lets his mind wander, remembering his situation prior... then remembered how his entire life and fate was ultimately changed from one simple moment centuries ago. ❛ ..You saved me. I was in big trouble back then. ❜ [perfect opportunity don't mind me :^)]

Kolivan would admit that this is something he didn’t expect to hear when he walked in, but instead he goes on to say nothing. There isn’t any spark of pride at the memory, only a gladness that he had found Antok at all and that everything worked out as he hoped they would, that neither of them ended their tale as just a pair of foolhardy young and it was a risk well worth taking.
Yet these feelings paint no smile on his lips, only in his eyes( and anyone with good knowledge of who he is would be aware that this is where you will find his smile most often ).The leader begins to move over to his friend, taking a seat beside him and allowing himself to become visibly relaxed, arms resting on his knees and fingers laced together.
Tumblr media
“ See me not as your savior, Antok. This isn’t the light I want to be cast in. ” Kolivan says with a hint of mirth that only fades into softness, “ You decided to join me, give some of that praise to yourself. ”He turns his head to look at the larger Galra, fingers tightening their hold on themselves before they separate just enough for joint to meet identical joint. “ From everything I heard about you those few weeks I spent in that city, I could certainly tell you were, and when I brought you in I didn’t know what to expect of you, none of us did. I was so relieved Vektos gave you the chance to prove yourself. ”
As if restless, Kolivan shifts his position again, this time to rest his head upon Antok’s shoulder while his eyes fall shut. He is silent for a few seconds, thinking about those years and the life they lead now, comparing them in his mind before he’s finally speaking in a murmur, “ I still feel that relief from time to time, for I cannot imagine another in your place at my side. I don’t want to imagine it. ”
