Verily, man, this wizard peace is splendid. I just saw a guy clap his hands together and say "spirits o' field and vineyard" or something along those lines, and every one around him was showered in fresh-baked pastries and loaves, had their cups fill with aged wine, and then were soothed by a warm summer breeze. The minstrels didn't even sing his praises, that's what a joyous time this is. And here I've just been casting calming dew and level 2 aura of cheer. I think I just heard "power word: dessert" two groups over. I gotta get over there.

queer themes in x-men my beloved. Angel binding his wings. Bobby’s parents asking if he’s tried just not being a mutant. Nightcrawler and catholic guilt. The existence of cherik. Everything with Scott/Jean/Logan. Mystique and Destiny.

I really want to take the time to appreciate how grounded the action is in this show. It does have its flashy moments (like the bunker shootout from season 3), but season 4's action scenes feels so realistic otherwise.

When River first ran into Frank in ep2, literally only two blows were exchanged before Frank got the better of River and put him at a standstill with the knife until Victor came in with his shotgun.

When Patrice first tried to kill Sam in ep3 and had to deal with Shirley and Marcus, the blows were all so weighted and each one felt heavy. That fight was more choreographed, but it really helped that each character reacted to the hits with that weight. Especially Marcus, like oof buddy.

And in ep5, that final tussle at the end with River & Emma vs Patrice... it just felt so visceral to see Emma desperately trying to put Patrice down with River helping as much as he could (which wasn't much, since he was handcuffed to the car). The acting and sound design also really helped, cuz Emma's effortful (and lowkey hysteric) grunts and River's panicked gasps really helped with making me feel super tense (still not recovered 🫨👍) Patrice managing to brush off all of Emma's attacks made him so much scarier when he finally put her down and took River (sidenote: River's realistic reactions to loud guns is usually funny, but in the case of Patrice using it right next to his ear it was terrifying).

this ramble went on longer than i thought but gosh this show is. So. GOOD.

WAIT. those postcards(?) on the wall above River's head here. remember in 1x01 when he went to talk to David and they talked about Isobel a bit?

- Have you heard from your mother recently?

- Oh. Yeah. A postcard from Istanbul of all places.

so she still has sent him postcards from time to time. she's just never bothered with drawing him some anymore, or to send something like that specifically for his birthdays (well since he was 10).

which brings me to: those postcards on the wall (Kenya, Iceland, Whistler(?)) MUST be from her too. i thought at first it was what River was interested in as a kid, but to think of it there's no way his grandparents could have travelled to any of those places (with or without him). i mean, David (according to the Park) has never even been to France, at least officially. so the only person who could have sent them to him is his mother. and he put those on that wall in his room

this might just be some special quality saskia reeves possesses and is unique to her as a person rather than an actress but often standish feels both very old (affectionately) and at the same time—very young. not necessarily naïve, though there's a little of that, but just... child-like in her body language and mannerisms. has anyone else noticed this about her? it feels like sometimes saskia makes deliberate choices that perhaps inform us of standish's backstory via the way she moves in the world. she's fidgety, she'll pull her shoulders up to her ears when asking questions, she won't always meet someone's eyes, she does a funny sidestep/shuffle when she's made to feel in the way, she is always bowing her chin. idk i'm just incredibly drawn to what saskia is doing and how she's offering us glimpses into a standish in her formative years that maybe wasn't treated v well.
