Here is an excerpt from our piece of different POC YouTubers creating content about or living in South Korea. The piece was inspired by allkpop, a Kpop news page, that featured 8 foreign YouTubers living in South Korea. “We here at Black to Seoul wanted to highlight some more Youtubers that ‘allkpop’ did not list. The YouTubers we have listed are PoC, people of color, as to provide diversity and promote the essence of the blog. This article is meant to guide those who are interested in traveling and working in South Korea. Hopefully, we help you find some new or favorite videos to inspire you along your journey. YouTuber La La describes in one of her videos that the most motivating thing for her move was watching different YouTubers in South Korea. Life has many bumps in the road, but if you’re passionate about traveling to South Korea then Black to Seoul is here to help! We want to take any apprehension readers have of traveling abroad, by providing evidence that life in South Korea can be beautiful to all.‘allkpop’ mentioned YouTubers Megan Bowen and Whitneybae, so let’s start there.
Megan Bowen began her channel five years ago under the name Chonunmigooksaram, but changed it to her name in order help non-Korean speaking fans. Changing the name to her own makes it easier to search for on Youtube; this is a very smart business move for those who are providing for a global audience. Like most travelers to South Korea, Megan Bowen got her start as an English teacher. After teaching, Megan Bowen took marketing and business classes in South Korean and founded her own company, Gomi. Gomi is a marketing firm for Korean-startups companies wanting to do business globally.
Megan Bowen’s channel describes her experiences in South Korea, notably in dating, fun outings, differences between Koreans and Americans, and food. Subscribers to her channel can expect light hearted and fun content about all the things to do in Korea. However, she does not shy away from talking about different challenges she faces; challenges including qualifying for jobs, cultural differences, racial issues and such. Follow her channel to learn more about fun activities to do in Korea and daily life.
Whitney Bae has two channels on Youtube; whitneybaeIRL 휘트니의 레알 생활, her english channel, and 휘트니 whitneybae, her Korean channel. Having two channels allows for Whitney Bae to have broader reach globally. She is providing content for both Korean and English speakers, which is very appealing to those trying to learn either of the languages. The separation also allows fans to show double support by subscribing to both channels.
휘트니 whitneybae, the Korean channel, offers fun skits about food, beauty, and trends in South Korea. It’s a great way for Korean speakers to learn more about life as a foreigner in an amusing and energetic manner. Whitney Bae’s editing style and content is very similar to that of Korean media; it has fast cuts, colorful pop-ups and subtitles, and cute speaking mannerisms. People can find vlogs and behind the scene content from her English channel whitneybaeIRL 휘트니의 레알 생활. The English channel provides a more realistic view of living in South Korea, while still maintaining a light and fun environment. She covers similar content in her English channel as she does in her Korean channel, but in a more relaxed vlog format. Subscribe to her channels to see what it’s like creating entertainment content in South Korea!
