I’ve been enjoying my limited color palette studies lately. I did this one for @technicallyverycowboy and @lugarn who introduced me to Playboyy last year. I wanted to see how the tattoo and satin blindfold would look when broken down into 8 shades.

As a paper artist I try to look at pieces and see where I would make cut lines when I work as if I was doing a layered paper piece. These studies let me practice that and make something pretty along the way. I do these by drawing over the original pieces and deciding at what point a color should break while zoomed into a ridiculous degree. While I could draw these all from reference without drawing over the piece that’s not the point or purpose of these studies. They’re not about my ability to draw the human form (from live figures or photo reference). I’ve done that plenty. I’m much more interested in how I might take a full color image and break it down enough that I could potentially cut it out of a very small range of colors in paper.

The whole process is very peaceful and meditative for me. I always doubt how the piece will come out when I’m working on it. I think that keeps things exciting. I hope you enjoy!
