I’m still angry about what the movies did to my sweet boy
From being one of the most popular and admired people at school, Harry was suddenly the most hated. Even Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs turned on him.

Equally Cursed and Blessed - Moonflower_Rose - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling [Archive of Our Own]
https://archiveofourown.org/works/61723999
I absolutely loved this one ❤️
I just read it and I enjoyed it so much that when I was about half-way in, I did that thing I do where I scroll all the way back to the top of the fic in the futile hope that somehow, I had managed to get the word count and number of chapters wrong and the fic was magically much longer than I had orginally thought 😅
This fic contained the exact brand the teenage shenanigans I love reading about but what was equally great about it, was Ron's characterization. He was a great friend to Harry. Funny and bi-curious and steadfast.
The kind of person anyone would want for a best mate.
I've got to say the smut took a back seat for me in this one. I love reading it as much as the next person, but Harry's relationships with his friends really shined because there was just more to it. The build-up between Harry and Draco was very minimal in comparison. What I did appreciate though, was how very quick and sloppy it was 🤣 It hit home, how young and inexperienced they both were. How they're only just on the cusp of discovering themselves.
It leaves a lot of room for the reader to imagine that they have the space and time to grow up and figure themselves out. A wonderful, hopeful way to kick of reading fics in the new year.
Moonflower_Rose never misses. She is absolutely one of my favourite writers in the HP fandom.

Day 26: a fic under 5k
Buttercup by @tackytigerfic
Harry Potter/Scorpius Malfoy | E | 2.8k words
Why I recommend it:
The only words going through my mind when I read this fic was "OH MY GOD!!!"
The level of drama in this fic was like something out of a telenovela. Scintillating, sinful and scandelicious, with an edge of of danger that hits you like a spike of adrenaline—the one you get right before you do something you know is bad, but feel compelled to do anyway.
Considering that I think that was the intent, I have to say, it was captured magnificently.
When I read fics, I generally look for that line or phrase that reveals something true about it, or succintly sums up its events. For this one, I think it was this:
He walks between them towards the Floo
It sounds innocuous until you realize that Scorpius is going to leave ashes in his wake and that he knew what he was doing—and did it anyway. He was as subtle as atomic bomb 💥💣 and selfish enough to wreak the same level of havoc.
I felt bad for him—there was still a heart under all that. To want something bad enough to use any pretext as an excuse, and to stoop so low just to get it—its devastating in its own way.
And Harry—if Draco never looks at him again, he would deserve that shit! Scorpius' cock-up was planned and premeditated but Harry was so rash. He had regressed into the pre-pubescent boy he once was, the one who would do anything to get one over Draco. When you stop to examine his motives, you realise that its not a good look for a man his age. But you feel bad for him and you don't get a sense of how culpable he really is until you've read this fic more than half dozen times.
As for Draco, my sweet man, was just an innocent bystander. Ok? He never did anything wrong, ever, in his life!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Every line, every word told a story where he was concerned. I think that is what makes this fic so special. There was a line when he confronts Harry that ripped me to shreds but I won't spoil it. What was equally sad though, was that if the events in this fic turns him colder and crueler towards Harry, there really is no salvaging it. And god-fking-dammitt!!! They were so close! So close!
I just think that all of that squeezed into 2.8k words has to be an achievement of some kind! I've revisited this story and it still gives me so much feels! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
If you haven't yet, give it a read! I promise this fic is worth it!

Day 11 - an underrated fic
HP Custom Brooms - marguerite_26
Harry Potter/Scorpius Malfoy | E | 8.2k words
Why I recommend it:
We've all had that that one fic that had us in a chokehold. Maybe something about a particular characterization or relational dynamic made us hungry for more or left us with a keen sense of unexplored possibility.
And this fic, God, I was dying of thirst. If I had any talent for writing whatsoever, I believe this fic would have brought it of me 😅 Sadly I just fell down the rabbithole of searching for other works like it and have been ever since.
Caution! ⚠️ Spoilers Ahead ⚠️
What was so compelling about this story, was how the age-gap was handled between its characters (44/18).
The disparity was so deeply felt, so immediately clear and yet, despite that, they seemed to contrast each other in a way that felt so complimentary that I couldn't help but root for them.
It was more than a physical attraction too, Harry immediately got a read on Scorpius, and right from the jump, they got under each other's skin. It amped up the tension between them into something aggravated.
But Harry was older. He'd reached a point in his life that was incredibly hard-won, and he was very grounded and sure of himself as a result. Scorpius by contrast was very young, conventionally-insecure and desperate for approval despite his best attempts to hide it.
Amongst other methods, this fic expresses character through clothing.
Scorpius, for example, shows up to all of his appointments with Harry, fashionably late and dressed to the nines. He wants to make an impression, he wants to be seen, admired, wanted, as opposed to Harry who couldn't give a fig about what Scorpius or the rest of the Wizarding World thought of him.
None of these things are explicitly stated in the fic, they expressed through action but reading it, you'll really get a feel for the difference in their maturity-levels, self-control, confidence, and comfort in their own sexuality — things that only come with age.
I especially liked that when it came down to it, Harry could admit that he was attracted Scorpius and still not be moved to action by his attraction even when he knew Scorpius reciprocated.
He displayed so much emotional-intelligence and empathy in this fic. He knew the spell that they cast on the broom to infuse it with both of their magic could compromise Scorpius' ability to consent and he was explained that, despite it putting him in an uncomfortable position.
He didn't press his advantage when Scorpius was having his little sexuality crisis. And when Scorpius insisted on having sex, Harry was transparent about the fact that, they were both at a stage in their lives where it couldn't be anything more than a casual affair.
At every step of the way, he was... kind. Knowledgeable. Knowing.
He did what was best for Scorpius and when a character who is the more powerful of the two displays that level of self-awareness and respect, I can't help but root for them.
I liked that by the end of the fic, despite being spoiled rotten by his grandfather, Scorpius showed up ontime when he hadn't on the previous days. Harry had earned his respect. And funnily enough he was dressed down for the occasion because he began to trust Harry and let him see the person he was underneath.
Fics that end this way, always feel like there is more to tell. I wanted a part 2 so bad, maybe one where this iteration of Scorpius and Harry met again in a time that was kinder to both of them ... and yet I have so much respect for the way the author ended it because it showed Harry's commitment to doing what was in Scorpius' best interest despite wanting more for himself.
I loved the banter between them, I loved how they got on each other's nerves. I loved that by the end, Scorpius seemed more confident and on his way to becoming a better person.
That for me, is why this fic is so so underrated.
I've literally devoured so many other fics with this pairing when previously it wasn't really my thing. For it, I'm ready to bat and would send it everyone's way if I could 🤣

Harry and Ginny's relationship always seemed very shallow to me. It just didn't seem like they had enough substance between them to end up married.
I even think that Harry had more in his interactions with Luna than with Ginny. Such as how he invited her to Slughorn's party, regretted it and then turned around and had a great time with her. I personally loved how she recognized him even when he was polyjuiced in DH by his facial expression 🤣
The point is, even before I saw the very real possibility of Harry/Draco, I didn't buy Harry/Ginny as a couple and it took me a long time to figure out why.
In fiction, there is this trope called the "cool girl" and it is often contrasted with a "needy, hypersensitive, ultra-feminine uncool girl". There is an excellent deconstruction of this trope here.
In OotP, Cho, from her perspective, had every reason to be traumatized and emotional but this was off-putting to Harry. Ginny was literally written to be the opposite of Cho, she's the "cool girl" to Cho's "uncool girl". In DH, Harry even says he likes that she's rarely weepy and he thinks having 6 brothers toughened her up.
People like Ginny from the books but when you stop to think about it, she comes off more as a one-dimensional caricature than a character. She's basically the cool girl trope to a T and she and Harry don't talk about any of the heavy emotional things. All of that stuff just remains unsaid between them and honestly, that is not something to want in a marriage.
When you have been through some bad shit in your life and you're in a committed relationship, you'll be awfully surprised how much effort you have to go to, to talk about that stuff because all the bad things you bury rears its ugly head and affects the relationship.
What I don't get, is that there was so much time to rectify this. It's like Harry didn't really start to notice Ginny existed until the 6th book even though he's been spending the summer with her family almost every year and she's in same house as him. We don't know anything about her, we get "she's pretty, great at quidditch, they're dating and Harry's happy" 🙄
They dated for about 3 months when Harry was 16! And he broke up with her to go Horcrux-hunting. You really expect me to believe they ended up married? And not to put a finer point on it, but even when this sort of thing happens in real life, it's rare! This is dumb. It's giving that stunted view of love that people have when they're teenagers where you meet someone at 16 and you stay with them forever.
At best Harry/Ginny seems like a dead-end kind of love where there is no possibility for change or growth and at worse, they might not be good for each other at all. This could have been avoided altogether if she was developed as a character.
I keep thinking about the fact that hinny is kind of the opposite of drarry in the sense that Harry really shouldn't know that much about Draco but he does, while he should know a lot about Ginny but he doesn't.
Harry and Draco aren't friends and aren't even in the same House but Harry is so attuned to him that he remembers items Draco looked at in a shop more than 4 years previously, knows every detail of his appearance down to the exact shade of his eyes and skin, and can recognize him instantly just by the sound of his footsteps or a glimpse of him from far away. He also knows a lot about Draco's interests and beliefs and can usually tell his exact mood just by a look at his face.
Conversely, Harry and Ginny are in the same House and Harry has also spent every summer since second year living with her, plus holidays during 5th and 6th year. They also start dating in the end of sixth year. Despite this fact Harry has never even been in her room till 7th year and when he goes in, he shows no sign of recognition at the posters he sees there. You'd think, for example, that he would already know that she likes the Harpies and the Weird Sisters and thus think about how of course she has that in her room, or something. Who are her friends? Who knows? Certainly not Harry! What kind of wand does she have? Harry doesn't know. (Even though he does know both of these things about Draco). What does she want to do after graduating? How did she handle the trauma of what happened with Riddle in book 2? Does she have any insights from that that could be helpful? No idea. Harry's doesn't care and isn't interested in finding out.
Honestly, when he thinks of her it's mostly about her physical features. And even then, her eye color only gets mentioned once - in book 7, and we still don't get the specific shade. I'll buy that he feels lust for her. But love? Honestly I find myself once again thinking about the parallels between hinny and ron/lavender.
Consider:
Versus:
Kinda sounds like both the relationships being described are light on the talking side of things...
Also guess what the first thing Harry does after kissing Ginny, the alleged love of his life is? If you guessed "looks lovingly into her eyes" or "says something to her" you'd be wrong. Here's what goes down:
That's right guys, gals and nonbinary pals. He looks right over the top of Ginny's head (and isn't that a metaphor for their relationship right there - he's literally overlooking her to think about other stuff) to check in with Ron. His actual priority - the person whose opinion and regard he actually cares about.

Day 5: a romantic fic
Poppiholla by Moonflower_Rose
Drarry | Rated M | 12.7k words
Why I recommend it:
I swear to God, participating in this fest and having to articulate why I go for certain fics has made be realise how much I like reading Harry when he's a little less sure of himself.
In the books, he has this straight-backed nerve that charges ahead when most people would falter so when I read about him when he's a little less brave, a little more vulnerable, I find that it adds a little complexity and humanity to him that I really enjoy.
This fic is without question one of the sweetest, most romantic fics I've ever read. It was soft around the edges, full of comraderie and so I suppose it also works also a comfort fic.
Caution ⚠️ Slight Spoilers Ahead ⚠️
I love that Harry was self-aware enough to know that he had feelings for Draco and all his friends knew it too. But they were Auror Partners and he decided, in that somewhat self-sacrificing way of his, that he'd rather not pursue a relationship at the risk of losing him altogether.
Once, he realised he almost missed Draco's birthday, he went out of his way to make up for it, even though Draco said he didn't have to.
All of his gifts were both thoughtful and selfless. They were all tailored to Draco's taste. One of them, was a reservation at fancy restaurant for lunch with Pansy Parkinson and Harry didn't include himself in that gift.
For me, this is a big tell when you're in a healthy relationship with someone: the person you're with helps you foster connections with the people who matter to you, outside of the relationship. They take you to shop for that present for your mom or pick you from a girl's night with your friends. It was lovely to read it about it in story-form.
And yet, for all that, he didn't do those things in hope that Malfoy would notice how he felt and fall in love with him. He did it because he cared and because it was important to show Malfoy that he was loved ❤️
It was so obvious throughout as well that Draco was just as gone over Harry. What I liked was the slow way it seemed happened, it was like both characters took their time to get there. It wasn't this quick and intense affair that fizzles out with time— it was the opposite, a seed that was planted and nurtured by the care and loyalty of two people until it grew into something strong enough to provide shelter.
If that is not romantic, I don't know what is!
Fics like these also remind me of how important people are and will always be. We need them in our lives, to support us and help us with our little struggles and they give us the opportunity to provide that support to them in return 😌
I really love this fic. It was like warm fire place, an old armchair and a cup spiked hot chocolate in the middle of winter.
I only re-read it like about 50 times! Will probably read it 50 more! Lol!
