AGRAPHIA - (n.) writer’s block: Lack of ideas
If the words “I am finally finishing this chapter today!” bring back war-flashbacks. This post is definitely worth a read.
Every writer ever has had that moment. You’re sitting in front of your desk, staring at empty papers or an empty document on your computer.
You feel like writing, you really do. Thousands of ideas are running through your head. But there’s nothing. You know what to write, you have your plot but you just don’t know how.
Ever experienced this? Well then you have suffered agraphia.
It’s the most annoying thing ever. You’re walking around all day with new stories in your head and when you finally get the chance to write them down, your mind shuts down.
Imagine saving your favorite snack so you can eat it when you get back from school/work and then finding out someone already ate it. That’s exactly what a writer’s block feels like. It can go on for days, months or even years. But then it’s suddenly gone and you finally start writing again. It’s an endless circle.
The other day it was raining cats and dogs from morning to evening. For some reason, rain gives me inspiration to write. So I grabbed my book and opened a blank page. And suddenly all the ideas I had were gone, or weren’t good enough anymore. I tried listening to music, made myself a good coffee; but nothing came to mind.
It wasn’t the first time I experienced a writer’s block but this time, it really bothered me. Because I really wanted to write. So I tried to look for inspiration everywhere. And by everywhere, I mean everywhere. At one point I was staring at a fucking bag of chips, trying to figure out a new plot.
Yes, it got bad real fast.
But then, as soon as the block came, it disappeared.
To me, music is what really inspires me to write. In fact, the first one-shot I ever wrote (which was horrible by the way) was based off of some random Rihanna song. Maybe I’ll post it someday, who knows.
Anyways, I was going to this poetry convention the other day (which I, to be really honest, didn’t give a shit about). Even though poetry isn’t really my thing, that convention is where my writer’s block disappeared. It wasn’t the poetry, it was the music that really struck me. The group that was playing just hypnotized me somehow. As soon as I got home, I wrote a whole one-shot in two hours.
There are so many posts on this website about ‘how to get rid of a writer’s block’, which I believe, is straight up bullshit. I believe that every writer is different. This means that every writer has a different way of getting through a writer’s block. What I’m trying to say here is that there are a few ways to get over agraphia, it just depends on who you are as a writer.

bitchingbook - chapter i
The first thing that comes to mind when wanting to write a first introductory blog post is ‘hello world’, but let’s not go down that cliché road. Instead let’s say that we are two writers. Let’s use the term ‘writer’ with a grain of salt here. I think we can speak for all creative minds that are interested in writing that we label ourselves as ‘writers’ too soon. We both haven’t even written a book, heck we didn’t even finish the first chapter, yet we have the urge and pride to tell everyone that we are writers. Let’s backtrack a bit and rephrase our first sentence. We are two self-proclaimed writers. Our names are two of the most basic Dutch/Flemish names out there and we could probably both be the main character of a book written by a Belgian author. Our names: Jens and Jolien.
The idea of starting a blog was in our minds for quite some time. On a cold December day, however this idea became reality. That day we impulsively met up and actually got started on this project. We thought of a million names for this blog, but nothing seemed to be good enough. Both of us wanted a creative name, a real ‘tumblrname’, like underwatermelon, crazycactai or spacedoutbutterfly. The name needed to have something to do with writing, be fun and creative and preferable have an alliteration, because who doesn’t like a good alliteration. We ended up settling on ‘bitchingbook‘.
bitchingbook will be a blog where we share our writing-journey, experiences, advice, short stories and other stuff alike!
Make sure to follow us for some exciting content! Let’s all start the first chapter of our writing-journey.
