one of the most tragic things about isat's twohats fight to me is that there's no way for loop to win.

okay, yes, i know they can win the fight. but they can't go through with it. even when they pin siffrin to the ground, hands around their neck, one final choice away from taking back a life that should have been theirs to begin with, neither version of siffrin can bring themselves to kill their other self. and so, by the end of every playthrough of the game, loop is gone. and siffrin gets to leave with his family.

and, even venturing into the realm of post-canon speculation and alternate endings and canon-divergent aus, loop still can't win.

maybe they join the party in traveling to meet nille — except it's not their party, it's their stardust's. they're the extra, the sixth wheel, the one who doesn't belong. maybe, in time, they could carve out a space of their own, a life of their own. but that victory is so much further down the road.

maybe they go through with it. kill siffrin. take their place. get back on the stage. venture onwards with the guilt of the blood on their hands, the fear of being found out, the ever-present reminder that they stole this perfect ending. maybe they get what they'd originally wished for so long ago. but that victory is hollow.

maybe they go back to their own timeline. except (even disregarding the potential implications of what happened to stardust's timeline) they don't belong here, either. none of their companions know what they've gone through. none of their companions can know the true depth of what they've gone through. they can defeat the king. they can journey onward. but that victory comes at the cost of so much unwanted change.

loop still can't win. because none of these options give loop what they actually want. because what they want is to be the siffrin that got his perfect ending.

and they stopped being siffrin long before they made that second wish.
