🏳️🌈Pride Month Day 25: Sufjan Stevens 🏳️🌈
Sufjan Stevens is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has released 10 albums over the course of his career. His music has taken on many genres, from indie folk on "Seven Swans" to disco and electronica on "Age of Adz." He is also known for his fifty states project, for which he originally intended on releasing an album for every U.S. state. However, after releasing "Michigan" and "Illinois," he said that the project had become a joke. He contributed to the soundtrack for "Call Me By Your Name" in 2017. In 2024, "Illinois" was adapted into the musical "Illinoise" that debuted in January.
His most recent album "Javelin" was the first time Stevens publicly addressed his sexuality. He dedicated the album to his late parter Evans Richardson who had passed away in April. "Javelin" wasn't the first of his works to cause fans to speculate about his sexuality. "Call Me By Your Name" was a drama about a romance between two men, and in 2019 he released "Love Yourself" and "With My Whole Heart" in celebration of Pride Month. He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome in 2023.

🏳️🌈Pride Month Day 24: Lesley Gore 🏳️🌈
(Sorry for missing yesterday's post!! Was at a concert lol)
Lesley Gore was a singer and songwriter known for songs like "It's My Party" and "You Don't Own Me." She released her version of "It's My Party" in 1963 while she was still in high school, and the song became a #1 hit. She also composed songs for the 1980 film "Fame" with her brother Michael, for which "Out Here On My Own" won an Academy Award. She released her last album "Ever Since" in 2005, and she passed away in 2015 from lung cancer.
Gore is lauded as one of the first feminist artists, especially in the context of "You Don't Own Own Me" being an anthem for teen girls. She was also a lesbian, which she revealed in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in 2005. She was a host for the PBS show "In The Life," which focused on LGBTQ+ stories. Gore also co-wrote "My Secret Love" for the film "Grace of My Heart" (1996), which was about a closeted lesbian whose character was inspired by Gore. At the time of her death, she had been with her partner Lois Sasson, a jewelry designer, for 33 years.

🏳️🌈 Pride Month Day 18: Lil Nas X 🏳️🌈
Lil Nas X became a household name following the release of "Old Town Road" in 2019, a hit single combining country and rap. It was the longest running #1 song of the Billboard Hot 100 charts at 19 weeks. He was also the first artist to come out as gay while having a #1 hit, and as of today, the only artist to do so. He followed up with his debut album "Montero" in 2021. "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)" caused controversy around his use of religious imagery and his expression of queerness, with some accusing him of devil worship and sacrilege.
In addition to his first on the Billboard charts, Lil Nas X is also the first person of color and first openly gay person to be on Forbes's list of highest paid country acts. Some news outlets praised him for embracing queer sexuality following the release of "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)," and he has raised around $500,000 for HIV prevention. His accolades include 2 Grammy's, 5 Billboard Music Awards, 5 MTV Music Awards, 2 BET Hip Hop awards, 2 iHeart Music Awards, and 2 American Music Awards.

🏳️🌈 Pride Month Day 17: RuPaul 🏳️🌈
RuPaul Charles is a singer, actor, drag queen, TV personality, producer, and writer. He is the host and producer of the hit reality TV series RuPaul's drag race. (The Wikipedia page says that he is indifferent to "he" or "she" pronouns, so I'm using "he" to match that article.) He is often called the Queen of Drag for being the most commercially successful drag queen in the U.S. He got his start in the '90s New York club scene, releasing his debut single "Supermodel (You Better Work)" in 1993. "Supermodel of the World," a dance and house album, soon followed. Other hits include "Sissy That Walk," "Cover Girl," and "Call Me Mother," and all are inspired by the LGBTQ+ club scene and the ballroom movement. He married his husband George LeBar in 2017.
RuPaul is considered a pioneer in queer representation on TV through RuPaul's Drag Race, even with some controversy surrounding past comments he made about the trans community. However, RuPaul and the show's producers addressed these concerns and changed the show to reflect the criticisms. He is also a proponent for voter registration and created a fund with World of Wonder producers and MTV to fight against anti-drag laws.

🏳️🌈 Pride Month Day 16: SOPHIE 🏳️🌈
Sophie Xeon, known as SOPHIE, was a producer, songwriter and DJ known for her experimental takes on pop music. She is seen as a pioneer for hyperpop with much of her music combining elements of underground dance music and sweet synth textures. She released on full-length album in 2018 called "Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Sides," which was nominated for a Grammy Award. She worked closely with producers like A.G. Cook and produced for artists like Charli xcx, Kim Petras and Madonna.
SOPHIE initially remained anonymous, hiding her appearance and voice. This resulted in speculation that she was using a feminine name as a gimmick. She came out as a transgender woman following the release of "It's Okay To Cry," which was the first time she used her voice and image in a release. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2021 from an accidental fall. Artists like Charli xcx, Rihanna, Vince Staples, Sam Smith, and others expressed their condolences. Charli xcx, Caroline Polachek, St. Vincent, and A.G. Cook all released tributes to her as well.

🏳️🌈 Pride Month Day 15: Reneé Rapp 🏳️🌈
Reneé Rapp is an American singer, songwriter, and actress known for her album "Snow Angel" and for her role as Regina George in the musical "Mean Girls" on both Broadway and on screen. She also contributed to the soundtracks of both, notably "Not My Fault" with Megan Thee Stallion. The song became popular on TikTok, with fans noticing Rapp singing the lyrics "Can a gay girl get an amen?" She also starred in the HBO Max series "The Sex Lives of College Girls" where she played Leighton Murray.
Rapp is known for being open about her sexuality. In 2024, she came out as a lesbian after previously identifying as bisexual. In an episode of Saturday Night Live, she called herself "a little lesbian intern" in one skit, and in an interview with Them, she said she was never comfortable introducing her boyfriends to people. She is now dating guitarist Towa Bird, which the article notes Rapp calls "her queen." At her Coachella set in 2024, she was introduced by the cast of "The L-Word," a drama series about the lives of lesbian and bisexual women.
