Max getting to watch her fast, rough, tough guy brother fall in love.
She didn’t know that Billy could somehow lose all the words in a dictionary as she listened to her brother stumble over asking a boy on a date.
Didn’t know her brother was capable of being patient. Until she watched him sit in silence and listen in awe as Steve explained the entire plot of “Halloween” from memory. Max knows Billy has already seen it.
She didn’t know that Billy could be genuine until she witnesses Billy give Steve the pep talk that would bring a crowd to their feet before his final exam.
She didn’t know Billy was capable of calmness until she watches him melt as Steve strokes his blonde curls through the window.
And she has heard her brother’s tears from her own bedroom many times. But she didn’t know how beautiful they could be when they are being caused because a pretty boy is telling her brother about all the places they should visit before they die. She knows he never thought he would make it that long or that he would have someone to share it with.
Max didn’t understand love, didn’t understand what it meant, and maybe she still doesn’t. But now she at least understands that when her brother has a smile that reaches his ears, or a blush redder than a tomato on his cheeks it is probably caused by Steve. And she knows that Billy is still fast, rough, and tough but for Steve he is able to be slow, soft, and gentle and maybe that is what love is. Maybe it’s something that Max could have one day.

I need desperate Steve Harrington.
I need him knowing, from the first moment that Billy sat next to him at lunch with his tray clattering so loudly that his french fries nearly sprouted wings to fly away, picking a hole into his nailbed while he struggled to apologize, cheeks so red he looked like he was turning to strawberry ice cream–
From that moment, I need Steve knowing he’s in deep.
From the first time Billy smiles at him.
I need Steve trying desperately to crawl away from it but every time he gets his feet under him, Billy’s dorky, bright, valiant laugh knocks him on his ass. I need Steve deciding, the first time Billy appears on his doorstep with a bruise on his cheekbone, flinching when Steve tries to playfully shove him during an Atari match, that he’s going to take Billy away from here.
I need Billy struggling to hold that truth in his hands.
He doesn’t know what to do with it. Too simple to say it’s not something he could ever deserve, but I need him to know, every time Steve’s head lulls exhausted onto his shoulder when they watch T.V., that love isn’t something you have to crawl for, begging.
I need Billy trying to smooth his edges but Steve studying, ever the botanist, the awkward, sharp, intense, smothering way Billy loves. I need Steve giving him space to grow, repotting Billy and himself when their roots poke up through the soil.
I need Steve patient. Patching the holes Billy pokes into himself with careful, shaking hands, reassuring that this small and lonely raft they cling to will never sink.
And when Steve gives himself over to everyone and everything that could ever need a warm place to tuck into, shoveling parts of his earth until the ground is baren, I need Billy to love him.
In that sharp, intense, smothering way.
Billy, cooking soup and scratching Steve’s scalp and running endless baths for Steve’s aching, broken heart. Billy, dozing his way into Steve’s trembling chest. Grabbing all the softest, sweetest parts of him. Shaking Steve until he’s dizzy and assuring, leave something for yourself.
No one’s ever loved Steve like this before.
No one’s love has ever inspired Steve to love himself, before, and.
I need them solid as an old hickory tree. Because they get there, one day.
I need Steve promising he’s never, ever going to go away. Promising to the stars and the mountains and the rivers.
I need him acting like there was never an alternative. Never a version of events where Billy could stop Steve’s love from crashing around him like a wave. Like feathers from a pillow. Like sunlight, breaking through the clouds.
I need them in love. And I need them together, glued like pieces of a vase. I need them jagged and whole and soft.
And I’ll spend the rest of my life, probably, trying to give it to them.

Top or bottom who cares, these boys are going non stop and it is mind blowing no discussion there. BUT…. I do think that Billy is unprepared.
I truly believe that Steve would be insatiable. Once they start having sex it is non stop, clothes tearing, no time to breath, and on repeat.
And Billy is embarrassed because he is suppose to be “better” than these small town people. Yet, every time he has to beg Steve for a 5 minute break he dies a little. But, he cannot keep up because nothing will stop his pretty boy from getting what he wants needs.
Billy learns quick that one round is not going to be enough. So he starts working out harder, chugging water before he goes to Steve’s castle, and even picks up running just to increase his stamina. He mentally prepares to be pulled within 20 minutes at a party into a bathroom or dimly lit closet and it is always better than any drugs or alcohol could be.
Billy started realizing he was out of his depth when Steve started leaving notes in his locker to meet him in the abandoned bathroom behind the school because he needs his cock sucked right then and there. And when they head down to the city and his pretty boy gets bored while Billy drives, Billy thinks he can see the saliva fill in Steve’s mouth as he unzips Billy’s pants because apparently there is no better entertainment than attempting to blow Billy’s mind while he attempts to not crash the car.
Even in the middle of the night after rounds of sex and the mattress is still damp. Billy is awoken from his dreams with something much more real. Billy thought he was shameless but when it comes to Steve there is no changing room, dark ally, or populated area that stops his boy from figuring out how he can curb his craving.
Billy is not complaining. The sex is amazing…but he can’t help but think maybe this is a repeat of his past. That Steve may just want him for his body like everyone else. That the friendship they made before their first time was just a build up to eventually fill Steve’s desires. Because that is what Billy is good for. A temporary distraction.

I think we need more culture shock Billy moving from city life to small town life.
Like the first time the gang takes him to the town fair and Billy is in utter horror when he finds out the cute cows and pigs have numbers on them to be sold and slaughtered.
The complete outrage Billy faces every-time Steve just leaves his front door or car unlocked and Steve tells him “The people are good here Billy”.
Billy meeting his breaking point many times when he forgets the entire town shuts down at 8pm. Not only does he go hungry and cold, but he also now only has his car as sanctuary if needed. And if he wants beer, he must pre plan because you cannot buy it on Sunday.
The complete dismay when the high school has an “anything but a car day” and people are driving around Hawkins High in actual tractors.
Billy gets a knot in his neck every time he orders a soda, and the waitress laughs with a “oh you mean a pop”?
He thinks he may run away when Steve asks him if he wants to go see the show choir perform. Apparently, it’s a big deal around here.
It does come with some good though. Like the girls need to be “courted” which makes it easy for Billy to take them on a date just to say they aren’t worth it to wait for sex. He likes that everywhere he goes he is greeted with “Hello” and then “Have a good day”, and maybe Steve is right and the people are good because when he is a few cents short for cigs. The front worker Betty slides him the pack without a second thought. With every essay he writes or test he takes the teachers actually take the time to compliment Billy’s work. When he gets pulled over a few times for being too reckless, instead of handcuffs and a ticket he is told to slow down and to be safe. And honestly the whole courting thing isn’t even that bad if it is for a certain pretty boy.

Thinking about touch starved Billy experiencing physically affectionate Steve.
Billy who is used to concealing his emotions and has grown accustomed to never needing physical touch unless it was through sex. Compared to Steve who can simply not exist without displaying his emotions, thoughts, and feelings without a physical entity to it. It makes Billy burn.
Whenever Steve laughs he makes sure to push his hand deep down into Billy’s shoulder to stabilize his shaking body and Billy swears every time it happens, he can see Steve’s fingerprints left on his skin. While they study and Steve is deep in thought Billy feels long delicate fingers tap rhythmically against his thigh. While it helps the pretty boy focus all studying is loss to Billy because there is nothing worth studying other than the movement on his leg. And when Steve cries he buries his face against Billy’s chest and takes the warmth there and uses it as a blanket. All while Billy burns.
Billy leads the basketball team to victory and Steve is there wrapping his arms around Billy’s back and he thinks it is better than any trophy will ever be. As soon as the temperature begins to drop, and Billy can’t stand the Indiana cold. Steve just takes his hands and puts them in his jacket pockets like it wasn’t even a second thought and, in an instant, the chill fades away and Billy burns. After practice or a party, or on a random Thursday night Steve will push Billy to the floor and rub out all his knots and Billy’s protest dissolves when he feels the fingerprints return. After every A on an exam or smart comment Billy makes it is met with Steve’s arms encompassing him in the most gentle but intense hug Billy has ever experienced. Every movie becomes Billy’s new favorite because Steve will crawl his way close to Billy on the couch and throw his legs over his thighs and Billy at these moments thinks he may have found salvation.
On nights when it is just too late for Billy to go home, Steve will tell Billy it is not safe something about monsters being in the woods. He will shuttle Billy into his room and let Billy rest beside him and he doesn’t dare ask why he is in the King’s bed and not the guest room. As Steve drifts away and into dreams he rolls until he finds a comfortable spot attached to Billy.
And Billy burns and burns.

Based on my limited research.
Billy’s 1979 Camaro Z-28 only came in manual.
Steve’s 1983 BMW 733i came in manual and automatic.
Steve’s car was part of the first generation of Luxury cars in the 80’s. Therefore, I feel his family would have gotten him the automatic to display their “status” and maybe sadly because they feel Steve wasn’t smart enough to learn to drive stick.
With this knowledge now. I am imagining Billy teaching Steve how to drive manual. And maybe they aren’t together yet, but Billy is crushing hard. So every time Steve grinds his gears, stalls out, or continuously revs Billy’s engine in the wrong gear. Billy dies a little inside, but he just smiles and tells Steve to try again.

Billy’s entire life he has made decisions with his brain. Growing up poor, losing his mom, having to provide for himself. He needed to be smart. Make sure he could make his own money, find a way to ensure he was fed and dressed, and most importantly keep himself safe. He engrained into himself that thinking with his heart was not a risk he was capable of taking.
Then he meets Steve, and Billy tries. Attempts to keep his distance and use his brain. He truthfully doesn’t know how it happened. Maybe he called Steve pretty boy one too many times, or he offered to help Steve with his homework too often, or maybe it was entirely out of his control from the day they met. Because when Steve smiles he sees the sun and when Steve speaks, he hears passion and the more time he spends with him he starts to build hope for something that he never thought he could have.
In the end it was always out of his control because his whole brain turns off the day Steve Harrington kisses him, and Billy let’s it. Let’s Steve take anything he wants, let’s him give Billy everything he has ever needed.
Only, love is for those who are allowed to have it. The privileged who are able to choose with their heart because when he is not with Steve, he is home. And his home is no place for love. It is a place where passion is sucked dry, and smiles are buried deep, there is no sun and no room for thoughts of pretty boys. So, he turns his brain back on and rips Steve’s heart in the process.
Except Billy did not know how formidable the heart truly is. He can’t sleep, he can’t eat, he cries every time he sees someone with a polo on, and he is about 1 minute away from a panic attack at any given moment.
Which brings Billy Hargrove back to Steve Harringtons doorstep at 1am. If Steve ever told anyone what happened that night, they would never believe him because when Steve opens his door. He sees his tough guy on his knees praying. With 4 different flower bouquet’s surrounding him, a stereo blaring “Just the Two of Us”, a bag overflowing of Steve’s favorite snacks and a handwritten poem. All while Billy is sobbing and pleading Steve to take him back.
Billy resolves on this night that making decisions with his heart cannot possibly be bad if it means getting Steve in the process. Steve Harrington is worth the risk, and he is done being afraid.

I feel like as a fandom we recognize that Billy is all alone in Hawkins but what about Steve. When Billy arrives in Hawkins Steve is coming out of a break up, he lost his best friend, and from what we all believe he doesn’t have active parents who care about him.
Steve has the kids but he is 17 years old he needs someone his own age to hang out with. Input Billy (after they decide to put the fight behind them). Billy who has about zero chill and very little will to live. Shows Steve a side to having fun he never knew was possible. With Tommy it always felt like he had to prove something.
But with Billy it’s random rocks being thrown at his window to go for an endless drive to no where. Sneaking into clubs in Chicago and dancing like no one there cares who Steve is. Billy convincing Steve to get a fancy hotel on his Dads credit card just to rack up the room service bill because this is what “sticking it to the man is pretty boy”. Long nights high on California weed that Steve refuses to admit is actually better than the Indiana shit. Weekends spent in thrift stores with Billy begging Steve to ditch the polos, milkshakes at the only diner in town at 2am, and laughing. A lot of laughing.
Steve finds himself throughout his friendship with Billy. And if he happens to discover he is in love with him too. Well who better to love than your best friend.

I feel like Billy would say the most outlandish things about why he doesn’t want to hook up with woman.
“My mom told me not to sleep with woman taller than me”
“I’m not into blonde’s, or red heads, or anyone with curly hair” “I’m a catch and my mother told me never to settle”
“I heard she doesn’t floss, no way I’m making out with her”
“For religious reasons I don’t have sex on Friday’s”
“I can’t have sex when it is a full moon, bad omens”
“It’s too cold can’t risk getting sick”
Which leads to everyone trying to find the perfect girl for Billy. Yet, Billy always has a reason why it just isn’t going to work.
Eventually they go to Max for help and if she describes Billy’s ideal person as tall, slim but strong, brown eyes with fluffy brown hair too match, and at times too dumb too function… they will figure it out eventually.

Modern Day AU
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: I do not own any of these photos, they were stock photos, found on google images, or from Dacre Montgomery's instagram.
Modern day AU where Billy and Max move from Cali to Indiana after Neil and Suzan are arrested. Due to the circumstances they must leave the state for the time being and are taken in by Hopper and Joyce.
Billy is not happy about spending his senior year in the hicks and his attitude tells everyone just that. He refuses to open up so the gang has no choice but to stalk his instagram. Which is filled with Cali sun, festivals, and a Billy that everyone would like to get to know.
Steve who has not been able to have an actual conversation with Billy since he arrived accidently likes one of Billy's photos from 104 weeks ago and he is about to deactivate his entire account. But not before Billy Hargrove sends him a friend request.
P.S. please add beautiful long blonde curls to all of the photos on this instagram panel

Billy and Steve have been flirting for months. Finally, through a fumbling awkward conversation they officially plan a first date.
Who could have predicted it would be the worst first date in history.
Steve’s first mistake was making a reservation at a fancy steak house because he wanted to impress his date. Only Billy feels so out of place he accidentally dumps the entire pitcher of water on Steve’s lap 5 minutes after sitting. Which leads to Billy basically fondling Steve trying to get him dry. They get kicked out…
Trying to save the night Billy suggests the Taco truck across the street. Tells Steve he has never lived till he tries real Mexican food. Billy didn’t know when Steve said make sure it’s not spicy, he meant make sure it doesn’t even have a speck of black pepper in it. Steve throws up in the closest trash can. Twice.
Destined to save the date Steve decides they can go see a movie. He didn’t know the only show playing was Mommie Dearest and he definitely didn’t realize till halfway through what the movie was about. He catches on quickly when Billy gets up and leaves the theater.
Billy is overwhelmed with guilt, all he wanted was Steve to be happy and he is currently blowing his one chance with the Pretty Boy. So, he suggests they go ice skating knowing Steve loves it. However, Billy may have overestimated how similar roller-skating is to ice skating. They make it exactly 19 minutes in the rink which doubles the time they spent in ambulance to get to the hospital after Billy crashes into Steve.
In the end they order pizza to the parking lot of the emergency room and sit on the hood of Billy’s car. Billy tells Steve that the stitches make him look tough and will do wonders for his King Steve rep. Steve explains all the constellations in the sky or at least attempts to. Billy never corrects him because he thinks it is adorable when Steve mixes up the Orion with the Little Dipper. It is the most memorable and happiest night of their lives.
Their next date can only be an improvement from this one.
