The way people treat Max and Billy reminds me of how some in the Avatar Last Airbender fandom still like to pit Azula and Zuko against each other. Seemingly unable to understand that was a tactic of abuse against both characters, that some fans just perpetuate. The same can be said for Billy and Max. To purposefully show favouritism, or at least harsher punishment, of one child is a tactic to create division and isolate them from each other, thus giving the abuser more control over them individually.

Half the people in the Avatar fandom still don't recognize that Azula was abused too and that her mother was actually terrible to her.

Though Zuko was treated like the black sheep by his father, Azula was treated like an irredeemable tyrant and not a young girl groomed for that role.

Zuko is well loved and "redeemed" because of the support network he was given. Azula did not get that, and people don't recognize her tragedy.

Though Azula was shown favoritism, I think she has some things in common with Billy - abandoned by her mother and widely demonized.

...but yes. They were divided by their parents. It made it easier to control them. You can't look at either one and think they were born that way.

I think the first time billy got proper aftercare he’d be so emotionally overwhelmed it would just be the worst, most heart breaking sub drop ever.
