Assignment 5 Critical Quest
Bria J Harcum ENGL 1301 Maryann Nguyen 5 March 2018
                                   Critical Questions Assignment 5
Who is most directly affected? In the book The Hate U Give, the author created a character name Starr who I feel is most directly affected. Starr is not your typical African American girl in the environment the author put her in. Starr lives in what society call today the hood or ghetto but her education is in the suburbs with the wealthy people. Even though Starr has a father and mother to live with, that wasn’t her way of living growing up. So why do I chose Starr to be mostly affected. The neighborhood know of her for being with Khalil the night of his death when he was shot, then she is remembered by a cop who can identify her and knows he could lose his job if she spoke up. Then you have Starr versus herself, she knows the truth but in her neighborhood she’s all for Khalil but at school she doesn’t know of him. Starr has a lot going on family wise as well; she has a friend who thinks she doesn’t represent who she truly is. She has a dad who is trying his best to stay out of trouble but also help a young victim in the neighborhood, her love life with her Caucasian boyfriend and her friends she goes to school with. Starr is heavily affected with the killing of Khalil because she is a witness of what actually happened. She also in school have to deal with irrelevant protest that the students came up with just to avoid classes and she burns on the inside ,knowing they don’t care what actually happened. Starr deals with a friend she eventually finds out makes racist remark unintentionally and it eventually gets to her and her friend Maya. Starr is hit from all angles mentally and physically of multiple situations in this book.
What similar concept is portrayed in this book The Hate U Give? In this book there is a scene where a young African American boy named Khalil is shot in front of his friend Starr. This scene and situation is common for what society calls the ghetto or hood and the victim is usually unarmed and African American. This similar situation is related to the case of Travion Martin and many more African Americans, where a cop pleads they feared for their life and killed a victim. This has been a constant tragedy all over the world and in the younger generation for males and females. In the book the witness is a teen name Starr female and the victim killed was Khalil and the cop was a Caucasian man. In Travion case he was walking in a neighborhood where he wasn’t known and Mr. Zimmerman a Caucasian security guard shot him. The situation were both victims black and killed by a Caucasian man are similar but Khalil had Starr as a witness  and Travion didn’t .Both Caucasian men fabricated stating that they feared for their lives and the victims had weapons  so they took them down. Even though Starr was there it was like she wasn’t because she didn’t speak up right away, she allowed too much timing to pass and the cop voiced his perspective. Were as with Travion, he had no one to speak up for him besides the Mr. Zimmerman who was there. The concept was captured at the beginning when the scene was set up of the location and the shootout happened. Both Khalil and Travion was followed at night and attacked and ended up in a deadly situation.

Assignment 4 Emotional Faces
Bria J Harcum Maryann Nguyen ENGL1301 6 February 2018
 Faces
When looking at the images the first picture expression I could read was the Caucasian guy with a black cap. His expression read like he was not focused, spaced out in another dimension, like he got caught thinking about something, while doing something else. I felt he could possibly work as a bus boy or cook in a small diner, in a small town. When reading Roberts response to the question and information about his background, I would say I was off about describing his emotion. I was also off about his occupation he is actually a professional dog walker, so he is a fruitful person. With the information provided about his living and transportation and life experiences Robert has a reason to look hard for his protection.
The second picture I chose was the African American male with the brown pilgrim hat and scarf, his emotion appeared to me as calm. Someone who finds peace in any and every situation. I think his occupation would be a photographer, someone who can position, engage with objects and people. He is outgoing and easy going. When reading who Allen was and what he do I was close with his occupation. He is a song writer and I put photographer both still a form of art that reaches people with their senses. He wrote that people approach him, so I feel I was correct in stating he was a calm person.
For my last picture I chose the elderly Caucasian man in al black. When looking at his picture he seemed nonchalant, a direct and to the point type of person. I chose the occupation banker; he looks like the type of guy to follow procedure. When reading Harry occupation and response to his expression, I was wrong on both emotion and occupation. Harry is a model and trained to be under hypnosis. I am shocked because I wouldn’t have thought for him to be in any industry, I guess I judged a book by its cover. However models in the 21st century aren’t your ordinary models today.

Assignment 3 Response to Suzy’s Letter
 Bria J Harcum Maryann Nguyen ENGL1301 4 February 2018
When reading this article I could relate personally to Suzy’s opinion of not being in the best situations to prepare for college. The expectation for college is more than just being yourself, but also having all the qualifications to get in. As a college student I feel I was not properly prepared for enrolling or even knowledgeable of the schools to apply for. I grew up with a single mother and college wasn’t a mandatory priority living middle class. I wasn’t poor just getting a job was a survivor tool to maintain my life and health. I originally learned about financial aid and in enrolling school through friends and recent supervisor at my job. In high school I did attempt join clubs and teams such as DECA, an  entrepreneur club ,I was on the dance team and I did cheer on the Varsity team my freshman and sophomore year. I did not take my SAT not because I didn’t want to but I wasn’t informed on its purpose or how it would help you better into getting into college. I can honestly say I did not pay attention to the sources given and take advantage. Usually in high school you have all colleges come out to recruit ,but I felt college cost money I knew I wasn’t going to be able to afford. I believe high school is important for family, friends and definitely teacher support and time to consider the structure of college plans. In college you have a counselor to help you structure and help guide you while in school ,even the course EDUC 1301 helped me a lot .Suzy never mentioned what all her  school advantage she had, but more on what other students used sources. Suzy dwelled on how other people came successful but did not state what she could of did differently. As a college student I realized if you want something you have to do research and take advantages of every opportunity presented.

Assignment 3 Response to Tardy Student
Bria J Harcum Maryann Nyguen ENGL 1301 4 February 2018
Dear, Tardy Student
Your expectation of your professor’s reaction of a student being tardy is not refined. In college when signing up for a class you are provided a syllabus. Now whether the student actually takes the time to read the syllabus completely, that would be an expectation made by a professor. I admire you wanting to test and observe your classes and the school environment. Please remember as a student you pay for the quality of class and the time being spent in it. When you think about a professor it’s respectable to think of your class like a job. If you’re late to work, you’re late for being an asset to the company. With that mindset no tardy is acceptable unless it’s medical or family related, we are humans and life does happen. I can understand 15 mins late but a complete hour is unacceptable, it’s as though you didn’t take the class serious. I do hope in the future you will take this letter of advice to critique your decision making and not feel I am shaming you. It will be respectable if you be on time and responsible in your present classes and not make the same mistakes. Good luck in the future!

This video is Ethos because you have two well-known basketball players Deandre Jordan and Chris Paul representing and a well-known insurance company State farm. In this video they compare a previous basketball game and players to an up to date natural life situation. It had the credibility because of the stars representing a brand in support of getting insurance coverage. State farm is a popular insurance and with the Rockets being a popular team the commercial gain a lot of interest.

The video I have provided is considered logos do to the fact that it is providing informative and the process if how a bill becomes a law. In the beginning the Bill explains to the kid that he was once an idea that went to government and was written as a Bill. The Bill also explained that he had to wait some time for the congressman to have their committee meeting whether it will become a bill or law. After that process the Bill waited for the president signature.

This video was pathos because the client first started off with getting pins stuck in him. Then the smoke led me having sense of there was a fire. I also felt the urgency of finding an escape for both the client and the man assisting him. I felt all the client’s emotions even when time for jumping out the window. Not only was it fear from height but also from being super stung by the pins.
