Suleiman Obeid, one of Palestine’s most talented players of the the 2000s and 2010s, was killed by Israeli gunfire on Wednesday while attempting to secure aid.

By conservative estimates, Israel’s genocide of Gaza has claimed the lives of at least 60,000 Palestinians. The death and destruction Israel has wrought has not been confined to just Gaza as thousands of innocent people have also been murdered in the West Bank over the past two years. No matter how shocking the numbers, institutions the world over who were once keen to promote human rights have remained silent.

It is important to remember that these people are much more than just numbers. Each person killed represents a life ended abruptly with dreams unfulfilled and hundreds of friends and family left to grieve. Footballers have not been spared. Obeid is one of over 400 footballers to be killed by Israel over the last 669 days.

Suleiman (41), who celebrated two birthdays during the genocide, was still playing football in October 2023 at the ripe old age of 39.

Obeid represented the national team 23 times- earning 21 official caps and scoring two goals between 2007 and 2013. He was somewhat unlucky that his prime as a football coincided with the worst period in national team history. He was best known for his blistering pace and wreaking havoc down the wings and also had an eye for goal.

After five seasons in the WBPL, Obeid decided to return home to Gaza in 2015. He won the league’s Golden Boot award for three straight seasons: in 2015/16 (17 goals), 2016/17 (15 goals), and 2017/18 (12 goals) with Gaza Al-Riyadi and then back-to-back with his hometown side Khadamat Al-Shate’.

In spite of suffering relegation in 2021/22 Obeid refused to abandon his club- dropping down a division. He led them straight back to the top flight and after five match days in 2023/24 Khadamat Al-Shate’ had a 3-1-1 record and was one of the early title contenders before the league’s suspension.

“Honestly, I am not thinking of retirement.” he told Kooora in September 2023. “I help my team and have remained a starter under different managers.”

Obied’s time with the national team is oft overlooked but not only did he score two lovely goals vs Yemen in 2010 and Indonesia the following year he also played an often overlooked role in qualifying Palestine for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

Obeid is the third Palestine national team player to be killed by Israel during the genocide. Mouyin Al-Maghribi and Mohammed Barakat were murdered in January and March 2024, respectively. With less than 250 players officially capped since 1998, Israel has now killed just over 1% of Palestine’s national team.

Obeid will forever be remembered for his infectious personality and the wide grin he wore on and off the field.

for those who are not up to date, rahul gandhi, the leader of opposition in india held a press conference on thursday where he revealed voter fraud committed by the fascist ruling party, the bjp.

the congress analysed handwritten data from the election commission's website to discover discrepancies in it. keep in mind that india has the largest voter population in the world. they went through the data without using computers and discovered that multiple voter details were fake.

there were instances of around 60 people who gave a brewery as their address, one thousand people had the same apartment as their address, there people who were named as keyboard smashes, and people with the same names and same photos having different voter id cards in the same city, etc.

after this, the election commission denied the allegations and removed voter data from their website. a majority of media houses have not covered this issue despite its importance.

however, this proves that the genocidal government manipulated the elections to get into power. it proves that our current government is illegal and was not what we voted for!!! may this lead to the end of the hindu-supremacist bjp and lead to a better future for all of india!!!

Opposition parties in Assam have accused the government of failing to maintain law and order in Upper Assam, pointing to a policy that permits “indigenous” residents to carry arms in areas where they are a “minority,” alongside reports of vigilante activities by Assamese nationalist groups in Sivasagar and nearby towns.

Former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Ripun Bora on Thursday alleged a complete breakdown of law and order in the state, accusing the government of turning a blind eye to rising incidents of violence and intimidation.

Several Assamese nationalist groups, including the All Tai Ahom Students Union, Jatiya Sangrami Sena, and Bir Lachit Sena, are reportedly conducting campaigns across various towns in Upper Assam targeting Bengali Muslims living and working there, labelling them as “suspected Bangladeshis.”

This trend has been especially visible in Sivasagar, where videos allegedly show vigilantes visiting rented houses and ordering occupants to “leave Upper Assam.”

The groups describe their campaign as the “miya kheda andolan,” a movement aimed at driving out “miyas,” a derogatory term for Bengali-origin Muslims.

The US embargo on Cuba is a humanitarian disaster and should be ended immediately. US sanctions on North Korea and Iran are similarly indefensible. You can argue for sanctions as a necessary enforcement mechanism for international law, and when a sanctions regime has a specific, limited purpose with clear conditions for its removal, in response to a specific, major violation of international law (I am thinking in specific about the sanctions regime currently applied to Russia in response to the Ukraine war) I am inclined to agree. But forever-sanctions as the US has applied to Iran and North Korea are comparably harmful to forever war. Their cost in human lives is enormous and they serve no coherent purpose in terms of keeping the peace internationally. In fact they inflame tensions, and limit economic integration of sanctioned countries with the rest of the world, which itself incentivizes all parties involved to keep the peace. They too must be ended.
