Week 1

My name is Emma Benedict and I am a DVC student. I’ve always had a very stylized way of drawing, so I find that the field of design is a great area to explore new ways to use shape, line, and color and share them with people. I’m very interested in how those properties work with each other to express different thoughts and expressions in abstract ways. Most of my art is representational, but I really enjoy using more surreal forms and colors to change up the day to day. One of my favorite aspects of design is the deconstruction of form to arrange a new composition.

              What knowledge I have of design is mostly from college courses I’ve taken in the past, being 2-D Concepts, Intro to Design, and Intro to Typography. While I don’t have much experience outside of these courses, I do take design into consideration in my day to day. My most recent purchase in which I had to take design into consideration is a Nintendo Switch. This is because there are two different types of switches at different prices. Since I don’t have a TV and I would not be able to use it as a console, I found it more prudent to get the Switch Lite, which only functions as a handheld device and is much cheaper. Another purchase I’ve made where I had to take design into consideration was a phone charger, as I had to take the length of the chord into consideration. I wanted a long chord to be able to reach both sides of my bed, but I also needed one that was transportable, so I settled and got a medium length chord. I surround myself with objects, colors, and art that I like to keep myself inspired. I’m always more motivated to create when I’m around other people who create as well, so I try to work in the same spaces as others if possible.
