Cight Interview 2016 by Tapria
Tumblr media
Tapria: How did you discover this type of music and what made you want to start producing?
Cight: This type of music was always used in Call of Duty videos. When I first heard it I thought “That’s dope”. My friend was really big into the scene, and he introduced me to a bunch of artists. Then I started making music as a hobby I guess. Voduz was the first person I hit up. I asked him what he used. He told me about Omnisphere and Nexus. I downloaded those and that’s how I got started
Tapria: Wow, thats crazy
Cight: Yeah I was surprised that he even responded. He even followed me too
Tapria: How popular was he back then?
Cight: Wow, that was a while ago. I think he had between 3k or 5k followers at the time. I’m not sure, I forgot honestly. But yeah everyone was using music from Voduz, DJ Smokey and all the other OGs. I remember deadlydollaz. He used to steal some dope beats. I was like: “How can this even exist?”. But he was stealing them so that’s not cool. But it really inspired me. There was this one song called “Radiation” (aka Samsung) and to this day I don’t know who made it. That’s like the godliest song ever to me
(https://soundcloud.com/paulonrecords4/samsung)
Tapria: How would you, in your own words, describe your production style?
Cight: I think I have 2 production styles. When I first started out I used a lot of nostalgic samples. I’d use those and make them into trap beats. Later down the line I was trying to create a brand. Something people would remember me by. Holy songs and heavenly voices. But everyone was doing that so it wasn’t original at all. But at the time I thought it was dope. It was just cool to me. The artworks especially. The cover arts that people used in this genre really got me interested. The pictures would always make me think. I was on Tumblr a lot. The only reason I used Tumblr was to find pictures for SoundCloud
Tapria: I recall one time you tweeted that you were in an architecture class. Was that the inspiration for naming the Architecture EP?
Cight: Yeah [Laughs] we used to make beats in that class. It was so random. Now that I think about it, it’s a really stupid name. But in this wave you kinda just name your songs whatever you want. Of course, we did our classwork but after we were done, we could do anything we wanted. There were a bunch of computers in there so yeah. I made that whole EP while I was on vacation. I guess I was just lucky. Everyone on that EP just happened to be my friend. I guess the stars aligned accidentally. I met Night Lovell because of Vaiku. Me and Vaiku were fiends, we didn’t only make beats. We were on Skype and Vaiku asked me if I heard of KLNV (Lovell’s old alias). I heard of him before. We checked out his SoundCloud, and we both wanted to collab with him. I inboxed KLNV to see if he was down to work. He said sure
Tapria: Tell me about greg. What do you know about him? Do you talk to him?
Cight: He’s so mysterious but he was dope. I asked him if he was down to collab, and he said yeah. I honestly didn’t expect him to respond to me. It surprised me even more when he wanted to collab a 2nd time. He was the only one on that EP who I didn’t really talk to that much. The only time I’ve spoken to him was through SoundCoud inbox. The reason I liked greg so much was because deadlydollaz stole one of his beats and posted it as a collab. I asked greg about it, and he told me the truth. After that, he gave me the file and that ended up being our collab “frozen” for the Architecture EP. That was a real fanboy moment for me [Laughs]
Tapria: Yooo [Laughs] That’s insane!
Cight: I looked up to greg before I even started producing at all. Before I even thought about it. So many memories, I forgot so much from back in the day
Tapria: Same bro. We need to talk about MIZUSTATION though. It’s one of the craziest groups ever made. Who’s idea was that?
Cight: I think it was MISOGI. He always has plans like that. I dont know why it didn’t go anywhere. Lil Netzero was the only one who I was tight with. I was cool with everyone but not like that. It would’ve been crazy if it went further though. We were all on the come up
Tapria: Yeah that dude is always busy for sure
Cight: You see how big he is now. It’s because he always has good ideas
Tapria: I wish it would’ve gone somewhere but I’m just glad it happened at all
Cight: I gotta give credit to Rejjie Hype (aka Shades) though. He helped me out alot when I was first producing and didn’t know anybody. He reached out to me and asked to collab. That was weird because I really sucked at the time. He supported me and got my stuff out there. He was always reposting my stuff. I got a lot of plays from that
Tapria: Was there anyone you wish you could’ve worked with?
Cight: That’s a good question
Tapria: It’s something I always wondered. You’ve worked with almost everybody
Cight: I know. I think it’s because I was always getting a lot of attention. People would usually always be down to work. I remember GRXGVR. I really wanted to work with him. We followed each other and started talking. I asked to collab. He didn’t respond, so I was like damn. I also wanted to work with bine (blank body). We started talking but it never went anywhere
Tapria: Speaking of that, is there anyone who flat out rejected you?
Cight: Nobody really said no. They’d just usually not respond
Tapria: Did you ever turn down a collab?
Cight: Louis Rain. His name used to be Net Worthy. I guess I didn’t like his style at the time. But were friends now and ended up working so it’s all good
Tapria: Tell me about 0% Boys
Cight: Me and Vaiku were really good friends, and we would collab for fun. We made so many songs together. He suggested that we come up with a name to call ourselves. I came up with 0% Boys, and he didn’t like it [Laughs]. It was a reference to something but it wasn’t significant enough that I can remember now
Tapria: Those were some of your best songs
Cight: Yeah. We had so much synergy. One of my favorite songs we made was “e n d”
Tapria: Are there any songs of yours that you don’t like?
Cight: Yeah. I don’t like “Illumination” that I did with 神POLO (Nancy Dead/Gloria Woah). I don’t like some of the songs on the Celestial EP. But I mostly deleted the ones I didn’t like. I was always trying to be the “best” in a way. That wasn’t cool. I just wanted to make beats for fun and share it with other people. At times, it can feel like a competition. At one point, me and Night Lovell had the same number of followers. Not everyone sees it that way but it felt like that to me
Tapria: At what point did producing start to feel like work?
Cight: I’m not sure, but making the Architecture EP was really fun. I’d say after my collab with Fifty Grand. It was kind of intimidating but I was pumped. I felt pressure not to fail
Tapria: Would you say that music became an obligation instead of a hobby?
Cight: Yeah. I got the sample and it had no tempo really. It wasn’t easy. I had to chop that up really well. It was worth the effort though. If I ever came back, it wouldn’t be on the Cight account. It’s fun to build yourself up from scratch. I had the most fun when I had 1k - 2k followers. I dont know if it’ll be the same but I want to experience it again
Tapria: Interesting. So tell me, what do you think of MISOGI?
Cight: Dope af. Cool ass guy. Unique producer
Tapria: How about Lil Netzero? You and him where my personal favorites
Cight: We go way back. He helped me out alot too. He damn near taught me FL
Tapria: That’s actually crazy. Would you say he taught you how to produce?
Cight: Yeah, I remember I was ass back in the day. I’m really grateful towards him
Tapria: How did you guys meet? Did you stumble across his page?
Cight: 16yrold had reposted one of his songs. I inboxed Netzero after that. We became good friends
Tapria: Tell me about your relationship with AGILE
Cight: He deserves so much more recognition. I don’t know why people sleep on raw talent. He doesn’t sample and that’s such a big part of his style. He makes all his music from scratch and it bumps. He taught me how to use Massive. He was there from the very beginning like Lil Netzero & Rejjie Hype
Tapria: What do you think about Svperior Dwells?
Cight: The reason I like Svperior is ‘casue he was into deadlydollaz like me. I was listening to Svperior before I was even producing. I haven’t spoken to him a lot. I feel bad because we were supposed to collab. His producing style is really original
Tapria: You remember idle≟?
Cight: Yeah, I know that dude. I don’t know what happened to him. I reached out to collab. He didn’t respond, so I was like damn… but then I realized he was inactive and not uploading anymore
Tapria: I know he would’ve said yes. You inspired his biggest song. In the description of 'エメラルド’ (aka “44”) it says “inspired by cight”
Cight: Oh damn, that’s heartwarming [Laughs] Pretty crazy
Tapria: I’m pretty sure you might be one of his influences. You guys used a lot of similar samples. You sampled Chrono Trigger and he sampled Chrono Chross
Cight: That’s wild. So much history. I wonder what the next wave is gonna be like
Tapria: We’ll have to wait and see. The early days of SoundCloud had a lot of talent
Cight: I feel like that was the golden age. Especially that one collab between DJ Smokey and Yung Gud. That was the start of everything for me. That song is so legendary
Tapria: “isuzu riding” by DJ Smokey and Yung Sherman too
Cight: Yeah, that was one of my dreams. To either work with Yung Gud or Yung Sherman
Tapria: Who are you listening to nowadays?
Cight: I like Trbld Boy. His stuff is dope. Also GREAF. I listen to alot of new producers too. Like gin$eng and angelboy. Me and angelboy play PC games together. gin$eng had this one song called “tears” that I used to listen to everyday. I was in like 6 producer chats and all they did was spam repost-for-repost all day. I think I came into the scene at a good time. It wasn’t as big so finding me was easy. I didn’t blow up off one song. I struggled too. But it was fun struggling ya know? I enjoyed the process and I enjoyed the sense of community. The atmosphere, aesthetics, everything. I never really focused on the followers, they just came with it. I feel like there’s no point of trading reposts. If that was around back then, I think I would’ve just quit. That would humiliate me. Me and Cavalier Beats (now Unit Kai) tried it twice just to see if it actually worked
Tapria: In an ideal world, everyone would only repost songs they actually liked. To me, it feels more genuine that way. I see people selling reposts nowadays. What are your thoughts on that?
Cight: Maybe they’re in some hard times and need some money. I can’t really judge. Everyone is trying to get big so fast. It takes the fun out of it for me. everything needs to slow down. I remember when Oshi blew up. That was crazy to watch. He had this one remix of CoCo by OT Genasis. That joint went hard. I give him props
Tapria: What are your thoughts on the homie Pearl White?
Cight: He’s pretty dope. I like his style a lot. I like that he doesn’t sound like every other producer. He’s chill. I Skyped with him a few times. His rework of Fifty Grand’s “Ukey Black” was flames
Tapria: Heck yeah
Cight: I like his pictures too. It’s always dope to me when an artist has the artwork on point
Tapria: Any retired producers you’d like to see come back?
Cight: I wish idle≟ would come back. I want greg to come back too
Tapria: You used to make Call of Duty videos before music right?
Cight: Yeah
Tapria: Your old alias was Maps?
Cight: Yeah I used to record myself doing some wild glitches that I found. I applied those glitches to trickshotting and people loved it. It was really lame. I feel like a lot of people who made CoD videos ended up in the producing scene. Especially from vine. They always use the sickest songs but never tell you the name
Tapria: What advice would you give to anyone out there new to producing?
Cight: I really don’t know. I just got lucky. But I would recommend collabing as much as possible. Both artists get new fans from each other’s fanbases. It makes it easier for people to find you. I attribute a lot of my success to that. Collabing was also the main way I improved my skills. You learn alot from seeing other people’s files. Even if the song is finished, ask them to send you the file. You can analyze it. Working with others makes you better. For me, I always tried super hard, so I didn’t let the other person down
Tapria: Yeah I feel that
Cight: I had no game plan going into this
[a few years later, Cight would make a brief return to music as ShieldLess. He would also start a clothing brand called Syckli that is still active today]

I’m watching you rain over me As much as the blue in the sea Your endless ways over me Keep crashing into me
While you were out sleeping I stayed inside dreaming Of what we could be
Cause you’re always The raw blue in my mind You wave over me
Cause you’re always
You are the raw blue Color me You’re deep in my soul Thorn in me

i cant get over how incredible this song is. play this one in my funeral please
Forget everything I know Under your spell Crush tones I’m still rolling You burn slow I only see you glow Oh, you’re so lovely
Forget everything I know I’m stuck inside echoes I let all my wishes go I only see you glow Oh, you’re so lovely
The magic you use is burning You conjure what I dream of Bewitching eyes Catching your sting I feel the energy rush The back and forth Keeps me moving I wanna feel your shake ups I wanna feel like I’m losing I wanna feel you give up Oh, how lovely You’re so lovely
