By Aaron Humes: Drug traffickers took no chances last night, making their latest arrival to Belize a short one.
Police sources tell us a suspected drug plane landed in the area of San Narciso, Corozal District but didn’t stay long.
We understand it landed for refueling then took off.
Responding, police found only the tire tracks that matched those of an aircraft, running lights, and empty containers.
Police have recently claimed success in the interdiction of drug planes, with pilots forced to alter course or hurriedly leave town on landing with the cops after them.
This matter is under further investigation at the moment but we will keep following it.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Police Department says that it is hoping there will be better lighting placed in key areas of the Philip Goldson Highway, following a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on Saturday night.
Reports are that 30-year-old Elias Nahum Vellos was riding his bicycle on the Philip Goldson Highway shortly before 9:00 p.m. when he was hit by a car being driven at the time by 25-year-old Delawn Julian Abraham. Vellos received severe injuries to the head and body and died on the spot.
Today, Director for Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood, said that a notice of intended prosecution has been served on Abraham, but that there is a greater need for better lighting in the area.
“It is very very dark. The road itself is made of that hot mix material that is very dark at night. The lighting at the side of that road, almost next to impossible. I know that the road itself is not properly marked, no reflectors to help…for you to stay on your side. It is unfortunate that someone lost their life but I would hope that it would prompt some improvement when it comes to the lighting,” Yearwood said.
He stressed the area most in need is between the Lord’s Bank Junction and the Burrell Boom Junction, where he stresses that the only place in that area with adequate lighting is near the entrance to Los Lagos.
Abraham told police that he was driving to Sandhill when the vehicle in front of him swerved suddenly. In trying to avoid that vehicle he swerved out of the way which caused him to hit Vellos.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Today the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) launched a countrywide Frontline Service Excellence and Leadership series of training sessions in Belize City.
The first training session is being held on Monday and Tuesday, November 1 and 2, for frontline personnel at the Philip Goldson International Airport and the Cruise Ports. The sessions at the Tapir Room of the Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
“The training aims to increase the level of customer service provided to tourists across the tourism value chain as a part of BTB’s ‘Destination Ambassadors’ Program,” said the BTB in a press release. “Participants included Civil Aviation, Customs, Immigration, Ministry of Health and Wellness, Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), as well as BTB hospitality staff.”
The training sessions are being conducted by Claudine Pohl of Lemoneight, a company based in Canada.
The BTB said Pohl “kept the participants very engaged”.
BTB said this training program is part of a new national expanded tourism training initiative that seeks to further strengthen the recovery of the tourism industry. It is expected that after the training, the Destination Ambassadors will be better able to provide greater support to all visitors arriving in Belize.
The BTB said the Tourism Police Unit is participating in the training in Belize City on Monday, November 1, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., in San Pedro on Wednesday, November 3, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and in Cayo on Friday, November 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

By Aaron Humes: The young men at the center of today’s Community Resource Hub initiative thanked those present for allowing them to be heard.
Sheldon Sosa, co-founder, explained that many before had not tried to hear from them, and had not, in his words, “planted the bad seed to see if something good would come from it.”
He promised that would be true of this hub, the fishing line that brings the money for the communities and eases the social and economic tension.
A highlight of these events is the passing of the torch from previous hub founders. Today it was Michael Francis from Majestic Alley, whose area was once at war with this area but shook hands with Sheldon Sosa and others and promised to support them.
Mayor Bernard Wagner closed the show by lauding the providing of the “Big O” – opportunity – to be balanced by willpower of those seeking it.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After falling in its initial two matches, Belize bounced back today, Monday, beating Honduras in three consecutive sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) at the Guatemala City Dome.
“The three sets were always very close and Belize knew how to capitalize on the ups and downs that Honduras suffered after losing center-back Luis Matamoros in the first set due to a knee injury and an elbow injury to libero Héctor Ortiz in the third set,” said Afecavol, the regional governing body.
According to Afecavol, striker Francis Hauze scored 17 points, 14 from attack, and 3 aces in Belize’s win. Attacker Bryton Codd collected 15 points while opposite player Karym Coleman recorded 14 points. Strikers José David Espinal with 10 points. Carlos Osorio scored 9.
Belize led the attack over Honduras 45-32 and the service 4-0. The teams were tied in blocking with 7 each. Belize made 24 unforced errors while Honduras committed 19.
Elton Anderson, captain of Belize: “Day by day we are improving, today everyone was in their element,” said Belize’s captain Elton Anderson according to Afecavol. “We were more focused; we had excellent practice in the morning that transcended the game. About my eye, I’m not seeing very well, but in Belize we are soldiers and I am not going to stay observing my team from the outside.”
Anderson had hurt an eyelid in the game against El Salvador on Sunday.
Both teams are free on Tuesday. Belize, because Panama, the team our guys were scheduled to play pulled out at the last minute, and Honduras has the day off.
Because of Panama’s non-participation, all teams were awarded a victory, so Belize is now 2-2 after losing to Nicaragua and El Salvador. Honduras drops to 1-3.
On Sunday, El Salvador beat Belize in four sets 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 26-24, 25-19). Opposite Karym Coleman was Belize’s top scorer with 26 points, followed by attackers Francis Hauze with 14 points and Bryton Codd with 12.
On Saturday, the first day of the competition, Belize fell in four sets to Nicaragua in a very competitive match. Nicaragua won 3-1 (27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23).
Belizean opposite Karym Coleman scored a game-high 30 points with forward Francis Hauze adding 18 points, including 5 blocks, and Bryton Codd scoring 15 points, including 2 aces.
Today, Nicaragua picked up a free 25-0, 25-0, 25-0 win as they had Panama as rivals at 4 pm. Meaning, the only remaining game today is El Salvador – Guatemala at 7 pm.
Belize’s remaining games are against Guatemala at 7 pm on Wednesday, and against Costa Rica on Thursday at 4 pm.
The round-robin tournament finishes on Friday.
ESA 3-0
CR 2-0
Micaragua 2-0
Bze 2-2
Hon 1-3
Gua 1-0

By Aaron Humes: Since his unexpected alliance with Patrick Faber to settle the simmering tension inside the United Democratic Party (UDP), for now, ex-Belmopan area representative John Saldivar has begun a campaign to rehabilitate his name in the eyes of the public – mainly by insisting he has done nothing wrong other than hiding the truth from his party colleagues.
In a social media post, Saldivar claims then-Prime Minister and Party Leader Dean Barrow was informed of the campaign contributions in question from Lev Dermen, “many weeks before” being briefly elected Party Leader after which the Dermen revelations came out at his trial.
According to Saldivar, “…My colleagues knew this because, on the day that I was asked to step down as Leader Elect, in an effort to walk away with a modicum of respect from my colleagues, I asked the Prime Minister to confirm to them that I had indeed informed him many weeks before and certainly prior to the Cabinet meeting where it was claimed that I had lied, that I had received campaign financing from Lev Dermen. So my colleagues knew I had informed the Prime Minister and that is why they have not treated me like I have leprosy…”
Unanswered for the moment is whether Barrow knew as early as September of 2019, when he told reporters he had already decided on whom he would vote for Party Leader at the February convention; how that influenced his decision to subsequently remove Saldivar from leadership and suspend him as a Government Minister; why knowing what they knew, Party members still voted against Saldivar for leadership at the July ITVET convention in which Faber won, and perhaps most importantly, why bring it up now that he and the party are out of power.
Saldivar’s wider context is a recent interview between Channel 7 News’ Jules Vasquez and Albert area representative Tracy Taegar-Panton, in which the latter agreed with the former that “it is “self-evident” that “John Saldivar brings too much bad baggage to the UDP.” Saldivar begs to differ, insisting that Taegar-Panton knows the truth but is willing to live with the perception if it keeps Saldivar out of her path to, eventually, Party leadership when the time is right. He adds that his unexpected alliance with Faber has created a problem for those opposed to both of them.
The bottom line, according to Saldivar, is that he has not been accused, much less convicted, of bribery and corruption and indeed, that all he has been found guilty of is accepting campaign contributions from a man now convicted for dirty dealings with the Federal Government in the U.S. (a local investigation meanders on). More importantly, the lesson for today is, “When the truth is not put in the public domain the public has no other choice but to believe the lie that they are being told.”
Where this leads, if anywhere, will be determined in times to come.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes won their second consecutive match in the FFB Top League dispatching Altitude on Sunday, October 31, 2021, at Isidoro Beaton Stadium where all games are being played to limit COVID-19 exposure.
Norman Anderson hit the first goal for Verdes in the 18′ while Krisean Lopez sealed the match in the 54′. Lopez is now the lead scorer with five goals to his credit after scoring four in last week’s 13-1 record blowout of Caesar Ridge. Trimayne Harris converted a hattrick in that game. Junior Vargas and Jordy Polanco added two each, while Darrel Myvett and Owen Sosa scored one a piece. Shawn Young scored Caesar Ridge’s only goal.
Sunday’s victory puts Verdes at the top of the FFB Top League with six points, two more than San Pedro who have a win and a draw.
On Saturday, October 30, Caesar Ridge played a much better game pulling a 1-1 draw against Belmopan’s Garden City. Dion Cacho scored the opener for Caesar Ridge in the 52′ but Jarret Davis drew the game even in the 74′.
On Sunday, October 31, the San Pedro Pirates played to a 0-0 draw with Dangriga’s Wagiya SC.
That was the second consecutive draw for Wagiya that last week also went scoreless in the nil-nil draw against Altitude.
For their part, the San Pedro Pirates blanked Garden City 2-0 in opening week on goals by Facundo Garnier in the 65′ and Gilroy Thurston in the 90’+3.

Another young man has died from gun violence. The latest killing happened over the weekend, not after curfew, but early in the morning as the high school student  was bringing home his breakfast. Today instead of his family helping him get his books together for his return to face-to-face classes, Ethan Thompson’s family is grieving.  News Five’s Paul Lopez reports.
  Paul Lopez, Reporting
Gunmen saw to it that the life of eighteen year old Mahogany Heights student, Ethan Thompson, was cut short morning. Thompson was returning home from purchasing tacos when he was ambushed, his sister told News Five.
Voice of: Shelene Myers, Sister of Deceased
“I mih the eena my bed the lay down and I heard gunshots. I the seh that can’t be gunshots suh early dah mornig. That dah weh I the seh to myself. And I lay down deh and my older bredda come and seh ma, deh just shot Ethan eena ih head. When he seh that now, I jump outta my bed and run pan the back street. I sih my lee bredda pan the ground the bleed. He mih done dead already the bleed from back ah ih head.”
The assailants targeted Thompson near his home. Even though her attempted to escape into a nearby property, he collapsed and died. Thompson’s murder followed a shootout in the community on Friday night involving his brother and rivaling individuals. This leads relatives to believe that Thompson was targeted based on his association.
  Shelene Myers
“From Friday night shots the buss up yah, no mobile come. The station lock up and no mobile come. All of this could have been avoided. Just now, my bredda deh pan the ground, so much mobile, so much police. All kinda people yo the sih. When time the shooting and the shootout yo nuh sih nobody. Deh the call deh.”
  Paul Lopez
“You believe that shooting is directly connected with what happened?”
  Shelene Myers
“It is directly connected, because dah after one ah my bredda vehicle deh shoot after. Like seventeen shots they shoot and deh ketch fih he bumpa. No scenes of crime, nobody come. Weh the police do, pick up the shells.”
Police were still trying to establish and motive and a connection between Thompson’s murder and Friday night’s shootout when we spoke with them at this morning’s press briefing.
  Paul Lopez
“Do you know if this is connected to a shooting incident that reportedly occurred during the weekend in the same community?”
  ASP Fitzroy Yearwood
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department
“Like I said, we have to give investigators time to determine that. This incident happened like two hours ago or so.  While I would want to be able to connect the dots so quickly, we still have to do proper investigation and due diligence.”
Thompson’s killers left behind a bicycle and their slippers as they made their escape into neighboring properties. He was scheduled to return to Maud Williams High school on Tuesday for face-face learning. His murder is one in a string of violent acts that has claimed the life of several teenagers over the last few months.
  Shelene Myers
“He dah mih wah loving person. I nuh wah stand up yah and she my bredda dah mih wah saint, because he was not a saint. But, he mih the try. He nuh into dah gang life none at all. He stay with me, he live with me. Anything he need i buy it fih ah. I make sure he taken care of. He neva into dah gang life none at all. So, I guess this dah just a case of, if yo cant ketch harry yo ketch ih shut. Deh mih the dodge ah.”

There was a fatal accident in Ladyville Village on Friday night. Reports are that just before nine p.m. Delwan Abraham was driving from Ladyville to Sandhill when he knocked down Elias Vellos.  The victim was transported to the K.H.M.H., but pronounced dead upon arrival. While police continues to investigate this tragedy, there are also concerns that the area where Vellos was hit, between miles nine and ten on the Phillip Goldson Highway, is poorly lit and a danger to motorists and pedestrians at night.
  ASP Fitzroy Yearwood
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department
“In front of Rodla Construction Company, police responded to a scene where they saw the motionless body of a Hispanic male person. Initial investigation revealed that Dylan Abraham was driving from the direction of Ladyville to Sandhill village when upon reaching that area; he hit Elias from behind and off his bicycle, causing his fatal injuries. He was seen with head and body injuries. He was transported to the KHMH, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. N.IP has been served. I am not certain if he has submitted any blood and alcohol sample. I will have to get back to the investigators, and then I can pass that to you. The road itself is made with that hot mix that is very dark at night. The lighting on that side of the highway is almost next to impossible. I know that the road itself isn’t properly marked or reflectors for you to stay on your side. It is unfortunate that someone lost their life. But, I hope this will prompt some form of improvement, when it comes to the lighting, especially between the Lord’s Bank Junction and the Burrell Boom Junction.”

Communications Director, Fitzroy Yearwood, also gave details of a traffic accident in Concepcion Village on Thursday night. As we previously reported, Police Constable Lazaro Catch was driving in the area when he allegedly knocked down Ezekiel Bermudez. To make matters worse, a second vehicle ran over Bermudez moments later.  An eyewitness alleges the police officer appeared to be under the influence. It’s an angle that is being investigated.
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department
“On Thursday twentieth of October, around seven ten p.m., police officers responded to a scene in Concepcion village, Corozal District, where they saw the driver of a vehicle, Lazaro Catch, police constable, he was the driver of a Geo Prism. He explained that while driving, he knocked down Ezekiel Bermudez, thirty-five year old Belizean, who was riding a bicycle on the highway. That person fell from the bicycle, he ran over the person with his Geo Prism car, and, a vehicle that was travelling behind him. Driven at the time by Juan Rivas, custom broker, that vehicle also ran over Mr. Bermudez body while he was on the ground. Second vehicle dragged the body for about thirty feet. So he was transported to the Corozal Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead. NIP has been served on both drivers, and the investigators are still trying to determine who and when the person will be charged.”

“An eyewitness on the scene says, his impression was that the officer was under the influence of alcohol. It was alleged, he was seen urinating behind his vehicle right in the aftermath of the accident, and that beer pints were in the vehicle, that sort of thing.”
  ASP Fitzroy Yearwood
“Of course if alcohol is determined to be a factor, then you know that charges will be levied on him for that consumption of alcohol while operating a motor vehicle.”

They are supposed to enforce the curfew and root out illegal gatherings, but tonight seven police officers are being investigated for allegedly hosting their own social get together on Saturday night, during curfew hours no less. Reports are that the group of off-duty officers was congregated at a night club and restaurant consuming alcohol in Belize City, when a team of officers on patrol confronted them. It is alleged that the group responded aggressively, prompting the patrol to call for back-up from Precinct three. The patrol supervisor is also in hot water, says Communications Director, Fitzroy Yearwood, because that officer was responsible for issuing tickets to his colleagues for breach of the mask mandate and social distancing regulations.
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department
“It is a scarce occasion, even before COVID when you would see me socializing at a club. It is not my sort of scene. I am very certain that whenever these new SI come out, governing the whole COVID regulations, that Mr. Bart Jones takes his time to break it down to the smallest level, for all of our officers, not only for me or general public. And, something like this, I am certain the Commissioner of Police would never ever tolerate, or support. I heard of this early this morning, and I was very surprised that our officers believe they can be in a situation, public like this, doing whatever it is they were doing, and like I said, it will be looked at by Professional Standards Branch. They have to investigate it. And, I am certain when I contact the Commander of Division Two, Mr. Sinquest Martinez, I am certain he has already tasked his people to do his own investigations. And, the findings will be made public, because we need to send a strong message to general public, that this is not the way the police operate.”
  Paul Lopez
“Will they be charged? Will they receive tickets for failure to wear face mask and failure to maintain social distance?”
  ASP Fitzroy Yearwood
“Like I said, the determination at the end of the investigation will determined what charges would be levied.”
  Reporter
“Wasn’t the patrol supervisor suppose to give them tickets?”
  ASP Fitzroy Yearwood
“Yes, I agree.”
  Reporter
“So something wrong.”
  ASP Fitzroy Yearwood
“That patrol supervisor will be dealt with also.”

Prime Minister John Briceño was among the first-day speakers at the Climate Change Conference of Parties, or COP26, in Glasglow, Scotland. As expected, the Prime Minister highlighted the impact of climate change on Belize, particularly in terms of the Barrier Reef and the high cost of extreme weather events to our economy. He called for “climate justice” and called out G20 countries for their continuing support of fossil fuels, saying Belize is doing “more than its fair share” to try and stop global warming. He also emphasized the need for increased financing for small island developing states for adaptation measures. Here are some excerpts from the address he gave today.
  Prime Minister John Briceño
Prime Minister John Briceño
“Belize is the proud custodian of the Belize Barrier Reef system, the second largest barrier reef system in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But here is the sad reality: coral bleaching, distress doubled from the period 1985 to 2014 to severe level 3 between 2014 to 2017. The Reef is dying. And may be beyond the point of full restoration. For Belize, the Belize Barrier Reef is more than a global beauty. It also underpins our culture and our tourism industry which contributes approximately 40 percent to our domestic product, gross domestic product. Without the reef, Belize’s economy could crumble. Our people’s lives will be forever changed. Excellencies, the threat to our barrier reef is a direct result of human induced climate change. That is an undeniable fact. I am pleased to announce that Belize just entered a $360 million dollar debt for marine conservation transaction. The largest Blue Bond transaction ever. And established a permanent $100 US million marine conservation trust fund. We will increase our marine protected biodiversity zones by 30 percent by 2026, four years ahead of our target, and we will place all remaining public lands in the Belize barrier reef reserve system under protection. Belize is proud of our record on conservation, but all will be lost if the countries of the G20 obfuscate and abdicate their responsibilities to act. With right on our side, we demand climate justice. We demand immediate action, ambitious action to save our planet. Developed countries must not only deliver, but increase their commitments on climate finance. One hundred billion US dollars per year can only now serve as the baseline. Funding for adaptation must be dramatically increased, at a minimum developed countries need to more than double public finance adaptation. We need to move from carbon trading towards carbon emission reduction mechanisms, with rules that apply to everyone.”
According to the PM’s office, while in Glasgow, the Belize delegation will be meeting with the heads of state of Norway, Finland, Canada, Switzerland, and the Dominican Republic and holding discussions with key agencies such as the Green Climate Fund, the United Nations Environment Program and the Adaptation Fund. Duane Moody is in Glasgow and will be giving you highlight from the scene in the coming days.

A new statutory instrument has come into force, including an extension of the nightly nine o’clock curfew for the entire month of November.  A few weeks ago, Prime Minister John Briceño indicated that there would have been a relaxation of the existing regulations were there to have been a significant decline in the daily positivity rates pertaining to new COVID infections.  Unfortunately, we were unable to achieve the target that was set by the Ministry of Health and Wellness and earlier today, a new S.I. was introduced that maintains several of those regulations.  After several weeks of total lockdown, casinos are once again allowed to operate at fifty percent capacity, providing that all employees are immunized.  Only patrons that are fully vaccinated, those who are able to present COVID vaccination cards, will also be allowed to enter casinos or other gaming establishments.  While S.I. One Thirty Six of 2021 does not mention anything about church attendance, we note that government has walked back on its initial position, allowing for unvaccinated congregants to also attend services.
