Our new weekly top 10 of "moody and groovy curiosities" with tracks from #Arca, #KronosQuartet #RyuichiSakomoto, #AkiraKosemura, #YvesTumor, #SergeiProkofiev, #Fink, #Bach and #Björk. As always something worth discovering and sharing.
Some comments on this week’s new “Top 10 of mood and groovy curiosities”. When putting a playlist together I always try to build a coherent sonic landscape, with individual pieces forming some sort of synergy, like individual cells forming a new complex life form. I love to connect pieces of music from different genres that complement each other well.
For this week’s playlist I’ve chosen some of my regular musical “center points” and some rather new discoveries which worked well in the mix.
The underlying theme of this mix is the human voice and the “physicality” of musical expression.
Voice and physicality of the sound environment are the crucial part of the tracks included in this mix.
Let’s go through the tracks one by one:
Arca-Piel
Arca has left a mark in modern popular music especially through his cooperations with the likes of Björk, Kanye West, FKA Twigs etc. whose records he produced. And it was Björk who suggested to Arca to try singing again over his mesmerizing instrumental electronic tracks, something with the Venezuelan musician who ones won a teenage music contest, tried to avoid for the rest of his live due to his insecurity over his voice and singing in his native Spanish language.
Kronos-Aheym
The Kronos Quartet has been a force in the classical genre for years, pushing the boundaries of traditional chamber music to new frontiers of musical expression through their cooperations with musicians/composers from the non-classical sector.
I only recently discovered their 2013 released performance of Bryce Dessners- guitar player of the National and classical composer in one-  contemporary piece  “Aheym” which is a furious and haunting tour de force.  A late discovery of mine, but better late than never.
Arca-Extent
Before Arca felt confident enough to use his voice again to lift up his game, he excelled with his marvelous instrumental record “Mutant”. The Track “Extent” left me speeches when I first heard it, and it still does. It complements this mix very well.
Akira Kosamura- Inside River
Akira Kosamura offers an appealing way of piano playing and physicality to the sound recording that is very attractive. I like it when the surrounding noises of the recording process are audible on the final mix of a track.
Yves Tumor- Limerence
This track caught my interest because of the emotional female monolog which was seemingly mixed into the ambient vibe of the music.
Ryuichi Sakomoto- The Revenant
I love Sakomotos approach to the physicality of the sound. How he depicts not only the instruments and the noises the players make, but how the sound resonates within his environment. It’s similar to the sound approach of Andrej Tarkowski in his movies. The sound played a vital part in the creation of the mood, the perception of the individual characters and the stories red line.
The Revenant is an outstanding cinematic experience on its own account, but Sakomotos soundtrack lifts the bar way higher to unknown heights.
Sergei Prokofiev- 5 Melodies, op 35 bis: No.5,Andante non troppo
Slowly, but actually not too slow- nice guidance from the composer on how to perform this piece.
I always felt very attracted to this particular piece of Prokofiev for the beautiful melancholic melody that resonates with my inner turmoil sometimes.
Fink- Covering your tracks
Fink- fell in love with this band- and especially with Fin Greenall’s voice, vibe and groove- and its music in 2012 during a long evening after a gig in Czech Republic. The promoter of the concerts at whose house we slept kept us drinking and smoking while introducing us to some cool new music. Included in this mix - apart of some cool new Aphex Twin stuff at that time- were Finks “Sort of Revolution” and “Perfect Darkness” records which we listened couple of times that night (Sort of Revolution, Move on me, See it all from the “Sort of revolution” record as well as “Honesty”,” Warm shadow” (you might now this from the Walking Dead…) and particular mindblower “Berlin Sunrise” from the “2012 release Perfect Darkness are worth to be checked out) . Bought all of their records afterwards and went to some shows in Prague since. Fin Greenall is an amazing songwriter and it’s good to see how they are taking the bar one step higher with each new release. Their latest record “Resurgam” shows also a significant “physicality” of the sound that was not so clearly visible/audible in the previous releases. My favourite track remains “Covering your tracks” with its great vibe and groove.
Bach- Prelude in c-minor BW 847, The Well Tempered Piano
Ah, Bach- how I loved studying this in my early years. No further explanation needed, fits well. Cannot stop admiring Bach. Part of my personal classical Troica Bach- Beethoven-Mahler.
Philipp Glass, Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt being my modern classical Troica.
Björk- Vokuro
At a time when Björk was one of the biggest music stars of the 90s she took a creative challenge and released a (at the most part) vocal only/a cappela record. If I remember correctly than the idea for that record came from Björks experiments in local pubs where she “conducted” the locals to sing along with her ideas.
The choir song “Vokuro”- originally an Icelandic folk song- shows Björks remarkable and deep musicality. This piece of music stands the test of time. And it rounds off the mix which started with Arcas first vocal track “Piel” (on Björks recommendationsJ) perfectly.

This modern cinematic genius (part of my personal favourite directors "T"roika- Tarkowski, Tarantino, von Trier) ! missed it in Prague last weekend, but will definitiely get my chance to see the new Lars von Trier movie "The house that Jack built".Something to be seen on the big screen with dolby surround sound for the proper "sensual and intellectual enforcement"!
Fascinating promotion with the posters showing the fragemented actors of the movie. Given the story and the underlining subject of every murder being a piece of art (in a weird sense of course) I'd say the poster with Sofie Grabol is the one that's most appealing. Despite the fragmented body it shows a captivating beauty and thus examplifies the movies occiliation between human cruelty and human beauty, deconstruction and rebuilding.
Will write more about Lars von Trier at a later stage.

Untimely contemplations in disguise of a Limerick poetry slam between two higly respectable men during a boring phase of a family gathering that took place in celebration of aunt Agatha's golden knitting society membership anniversary. Man on the left: "Listen to this one: ' There was a young woman from Aenos
Who came to our party as Venus.
We told her how rude
'Twas to come there quite nude,
And we brought her a leaf from the green-h'us'.
'Aham', the man on the right sighed and nodded. Having a sip from his 12 years Chivas Regal whisky. Not too bad, but 'I like my chances':
'A mexican nun named Sor Juana
Was hot as a wop primadonna,
But when the old bishop
Could not get his fish up,
She said, "Anyhow, I don' wanna'.
The two men certainly got the parties attention as their Limerick poetry slam didn't go unnoticed for too long. There was a sense of provocation and rebellion in the air, which gave the two men a particularly breathtaking and fulfilling thrill. But it was only after the following Limerick was 'proclaimed' in an utterly obscene, yet highly passionate fashion by the man on the right that all hell broke loose at the family gathering and things started to take a turn for the very worse.
'There was a young lady of Pinner
Who dreamt that her lover was in her.
This excited her heart,
So she let a great fart,
And shit out her yesterday's dinner.'
To his relief, the man was "bruisefully' 'escorted' of the celebration premises and decided to round of the evening at "Barney's". To his very delight he found a very intriguing Limerickish message on the choke board above the pissoir that almost sent him off for a good nights sleep:
"There was a young fellow named Meek
Who invented a lingual technique.
It drove women frantic
And made them romantic,
And wore all the hair off his cheek.'
The man laughed so hard that he peed all over of the floor and himself. But that was of little concern to him as he wandered into the night.

A last remainder of summer- a nice coloured, well balanced SUN APA #craftbeer from local Havirov Brewery U Balon. Citrus flavoured with a pleasant bitterness.
But honestly guys, who comes up with the names? IDAHO 007...did you get an epiphany for this beer while watching a James Bond movie in Idaho?? Have to ask the brewer next time I am picking something new up.
Life is full of curiosities:-)

In the beerloverslounge we also discuss interesting cultural and whatnot topics of general interest (or better to say topics that can be swalloed down perfectly with a good pint of ale, which kind of excludes politics for good reason). Similar to poetry slams etc., our cultural contribution had to be written and presented in a set form/shape/fashion. From a writers perspective it is quite the challenge to a) come up with something on a particular topic in a short amount of time and b)make it fit to one Din A4 page (more or less). So here comes this weeks cultural exploitation: How Quentin Tarrantino was influenced by Walt Disney.
"
Disney and Tarrantino
A challenging task lies ahead of me: to point out how Walt Disney- if at all- inspired Quentin Tarantino. First of all, it raises the question if a “conscious” inspiration acknowledged by Tarrantino is meant here. Or if we simply have to assume that Disney movies where so omnipresent at time of Tarrantinos youth and adolescents that there was no way to hide from it anyhow and that it somehow left a- then rather unconscious- mark on Tarrantinos way of writing and envisioning his movies in the same way that samurai novels, Asian martial art movies, horror and splatter b- movies and classical American western
If we consider what both Disney and Tarrantino movies stand for, why they have become cultural landmarks on their own terms, it’s hard to imagine a connection between the two contradictory worlds. On the one side the ever so endearing fairytales in all its animated color beauty, on the other side the ever so cool and fresh mixture of timeless dialogues and the fun made depiction of violence.
Think Pulp fiction, think quarter pounder, think Samuel L. Jackson reciting the bible, think snowhite, think Cinderella. While it would be an interesting and curious notion to think of Tarantino doing a real life re-work of Disney movies with Samuel L. Jackson in a leading role- and there have been such talk over the internet- the connection between the two film maniacs and the worlds they created simply seem not existent due to the contradicting nature of it.
But only at a first glance.
In fact it there is one key ingredient that stands out in both film worlds. And that’s the music, the importance of a song for the story. Tarantino himself referred to the Jungle Book and its timeless classic “the bare necessities of life”. That song, which stands the test of time as only a few others in the 20th century, made the movie what it is today: a classic. It gave the scene life, it transcended the story.
Same applies for Tarrantino’s 90’s equally timeless classic “Pulp Fiction. Imagine the scene where Uma Thurman and John Travolta get ready for the evening action without the immortal song “Girl, you’ll be a woman soon”. The whole scene would be dull. Only with the song it could become one of the most memorable cinematic interactions of two actors.
It’s one of the crucial things in Tarrantinos movies and its one if his greatest talents and skills to find the right music to accompany the scenes, to emphasize- and sometimes overemphasize- the storyline, the nature of its heros and heroines in the right- or better to say ‘appropriate- ‘dosis’.
It’s the soundtracks of his movies which stand out almost equally as the movies itself.
And that remains a lesson well learned from Walt Disney.
