FINAL UPDATE : New Horizons
Tumblr media
After a long-fought battle, Algeria is finally independent.
With the following cabinet:
President: Ferhat Abbas
Vice President: Karim Balkacem
Minister of Finance & Economy: Ahmed Francis
Minister of Interior & Internal Affairs: Baya Jouquet-Bouhoune
Minister of Defence: Lakhdar Bouregaa
Minister of Armament: Mahmoud Cherif
Minister of Foreign Affairs: Mohamed Lamine Debaghine
Minister of Information and Chief of Media Publications Algeria-wide : Mhamed Yazid
Minister of Health: Sadek Hadjeres
Minister of Maghreb Affairs: Abdelhamed Mehri
Minister of Education: Bachir Hadj Ali
Minister of Cultural Affairs : Ahmed Tewfik El Madani
Minister of Social Affairs : Benyoucef Benkhedda
Algeria once again has the freedom and autonomy to make decisions for its people, be it Pied-Noirs, berbers, or anyone else.
The dissenting French paratroopers have been publicly denounced by the French state, and without any logistical support, they were immediately ambushed and killed by the ALN.
Ahmed Francis established a Laissez-Faire market in Algeria, allowing all businesses to operate with minimum government overwatch. Because of this, foreign firms quickly dominated Algeria, yet it gave the country a level of industrialization never seen before. The only drawback? Economic disparity.
Tumblr media
Krim Belkacem created a secret directive to murder and kill all Communists within Algeria. However, because of the efforts of the Communist party in creating morale and public support for their party, this directive was quickly shut down.
Krim Belkacem was tried in the Algerian Judiciary for genocide and mass-murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Ahmed Francis was made the Vice President soon after.
Krim Belkacem succeeded in killing nearly all the Communist leaders, namely Bachir Hadj, Henri Alleg, Sadek Hadjeres, and Ben Ali Boukort, but he missed one target.
Alice-Sportisse Gomez fled to Switzerland before the ALN could find her. She is now being heralded as the savior of communism within Algeria, as she is one of the last surviving members of the PCA.
The PCA had been integrated as a political party in Algeria, however, tensions (as always) are currently rising, suggesting a civil war may soon break out.
The Cultural and Traditional heritage of Algeria had been safely preserved thanks to the efforts of the Minister of Cultural Affairs, a national identity has been forged in the memory of French colonization, and the identity of Algeria as a Maghreb nation.
Lakhdar Ben Tobbal's body was brought to Algiers to be prayed, in a tradition called "Sholat Jenazah". His body was buried near a cowshed.
Bachir Hadj Ali succesfully developed the educational system, putting in a few communist ideals within the curriculum, without the GPRA noticing.
Kateb Yacine wrote a book.
A Welfare Act was also made by Beyouncef Benkhedda and Ferhat Abbas to ensure the prosperity of all within the nation.
Lakhdar Bouregaa went on to lead Algeria during the Algeria-Morocco war. Moroccan troops were quickly decimated as a result of the intensive training prepared by the MoD.
Morocco was annexed and made into a part of Algeria.
Algeria would go on to join the United Nations and the Non-Alligned Movement, along with Indonesia and other postcolonial nations.
The people of Algeria cheer the name of the GPRA in the streets, though they silently curse the idiotic infighting under a bated breath.
Memorials were erected to the victims of the war.
The memory of those who fought lives on in the memory of the nation.

UPDATE 34: Vive L'Algerie!
Tumblr media
After ferocious negotiations with De Gaulle, Ferhat Abbas has managed to secure Algerian independence.
The terms are as follows:
Algeria is Independent and will be a sovereign state
Algeria and france will be friendly post-independence
French companies that operate in algeria will not be nationalized by algeria though there has to be at least 75% of the workers hired have to be of algerian Citizenship
French economic interests will be under a 51% french ownership to a 49% algerian ownership deal for 15 years and after the 15 years algeria has the option to buy back that 51% with no interest.
All withdrawal of french troops from algerian soil
Guaranteed entry into the Francophone Commonwealth
Infrastructural support for the next 5 years, to help rebuild the nation after the war.
Greeted warmly by the Algerian populace, the GPRA has succesfully legitimized their rule over Algeria.
As of now, the only thing missing is a constitution to solidify the frameworks and foundations of the new, burgeoning nation. Will internal politics let this country survive?
Who knows? Vive L'Algerie!

UPDATE 32 : Cultural Parade!
Tumblr media
17th November, 1961
Amidst the infighting and chaos going on within Algeria, Ahmed Tewfik El Madani, Ferhat Abbas and Alice Sportisse have succesfully created a cultural parade to be held in Paris, France. With 3 Million in funding from the Ministry of Economics' tax program, and approval from Paris' Governor, the parade celebrates the cultural diversity of Algeria's people.
Greeted warmly by De Gaulle, he remarked:
"Such acts of mutual respect must be the norm! Our brothers and sisters in Algeria must gain the same level of honor as any other frenchman." "To a peaceful coexistence!" This act was greeted warmly by many of Algeria's muslim population, who have been so far treated as disenfranchised citizens, with little to no recognition.

STATUS QUO UPDATE : FLN SPLIT.
With Tobbal's recent coup attempt, the FLN is now split into two distinct groupings of power. Tobbal and his men currently control the rural south, and the oil fields which were used as leverage for the U.S. deal
The ALN and GPRA still control the central regions, and have most of the military resources, including 200,000 in men ready to be deployed.
The United States is seriously considering pulling away from Algeria, as the oil fields previously promised may not be as safe as they previously thought. "Get it together." Kennedy remarked in a recent speech.

UPDATE 31: Another Coup Attempt!
Tumblr media
5th November, 1961
Legions of French paratroopers have begun their assault into FLN-Controlled Algeria.
Taking advantage of the chaos ensuing after the attempted Tobbal coup, the French have swiftly taken control of regions from Sidi Bel Abbes to Borj Bou Arreridj. However, it seems that De Gaulle has completely denounced this move! "Traitors! A bunch of retired generals!"
It seems that the Generals have acted independently, suggesting that Mainland France is unsupportive of these actions.
With Algeria split, the FLN now in two distinct groups, and chaos all around, can Algeria survive this assault?

Press Release #10
Tumblr media
Perhaps the most useless diplomatic negotiation so far was the talks between De Gaulle and an Algerian secretary.
what came out of this event was a long casual talk between the secretary which became awkward after he had asked De Gaulle regarding his personal health of which De Gaulle had said it was simply personal. The secretary then came back home with no information. It would seem as though Algerian funds were used to fund a secretary going to France and chatting up with the head of state with nothing important to bring back.

UPDATE 30: Fool me once
13 August, 1961
The ALN have once again attempted to besiege a French ammunition depot.
With two trucks filled to the brim with explosives, they drove to the Algiers depot full of confidence.
However, unfortunately, the French learned from their last mistake, and placed military intelligence in the roads leading to it.
The trucks were assaulted by the French military police, and exploded in the Rue Fres Kara street.
5 French civilians were severly injured, and all the ALN forces were killed.

UPDATE 29: A Coup?!
Tumblr media
17 July, 1961
Lakhdar Ben Tobbal, in an unprecedented course of action, has attempted to seize control over the FLN, citing "inefficiency" and "stagnation" to justify this radical move.
Whilst they were able to use their resources to amass support in the Southern Saharan regions of Algeria as a result of their increased police presence and their liaising with Wilaya leaders. However they were unable to convince the more industrialized central and northern regions to join their cause.
The deal with the United States, as well as the lack of GPRA funding being funneled into assisting the rural population has given some incentive to the very rural regions.
As of now, the rural regions, spanning from Bechar to Amenas are under Tobbal's direct control, very importantly, these regions are the ones with the most oil. As the GPRA and thus the FLN's government-in-exile is currently headquartered in Cairo, Tobbal's men were unable to seize direct control over the current government.
Algeria is now split in two.
Can the independence movement survive with this sort of split?

Press Release #9
Tumblr media
Support for Algeria is at an all time high with the ALN holding ground in Algeria whilst the government gains international support. It would seem that victory is close for the citizens of Algeria and prospects of a victory parade may be going underway. Bachir Hadj Ali stated in an interview “People of Algeria! Our freedom is near, the breath of fresh air is promised, and the light is approaching. Do not falter back to the French’s hands! They are merely giving you the “easy” option, they’re giving you false hope, and they’re dragging us back to the “pretty cage”. What are the guarantees that we won’t be exploited once more and discriminated against for being different from the Europeans? All of Algeria, be it poor or rich, must have access to what our land has to offer! We must withstand all these hardships for an independent Algeria. It is time for Algeria to shine once again.”

Press Release 8
Tumblr media
It would seem as though some French citizens support the idea of Algerian independence! As seen through recent events where Pro-Algerian French citizens had gone onto a trip to Algeria to interview several Algerians affected by the war. It was discovered by them that in several cases, French airstrikes and bombings had resulted in the deaths of French civilians in Algeria as well, highlighting the lack of care in finding targets on the French side.

UPDATE 28: Bye-Bye, Moscow.
Tumblr media
28th March, 1961
In an unprecedented move, Baya Jouquet-Bouhoune, The Chief Of Staff Of Military, The Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of the Economy have negotiated the return of all previously agreed assets with the USSR.
All weapons, military equipment, and financial aid being used to fund the GPRA's operations have been returned to Moscow.
Moscow no longer gains 8% of Algeria's oil income.
Whilst the United States' aid makes up for a part of the Soviet Union's previous support, it was strictly "NON-MILITARY" in nature.
The ALN's military funding is now cut down by 4/5ths of their previous capacity, only gaining money from a previous deal with the Minister of Economy to fund the military using 10% of the GPRA's tax income.

UPDATE 27: A Deal with the Devil
Tumblr media
17 February, 1961
After previously demonizing the United States, the GPRA has finally agreed to a series of concessionary offers made by the US to prevent Algeria's alignment with the Communist bloc.
The negotiations have included:
a. 27.5% ownership of all American oil subsidiaries, b. 175 million dollars in non military aid, c. Algeria taking cleanup liability for oil spills,
With this move, the GPRA has gained yet another source of income, despite being exclusively non-military.
Extra provisions for the GPRA's organizational scheme have also been implemented:
No parties are allowed to get involved in armed conflict with each other. This ensures that no party members are harmed physically or mentally
a. Communication must be clear in order to provide smooth discussion: b. All deals must be discussed with the councils, c. Military movements of the armed forces must be transparent.

UPDATE 26 : Spies! Spies!
Tumblr media
24th January, 1961
The Ministry of the Interior's espionage operations to the French outposts have garnered some results.
Abu Oueidi, a senior member of the ALN's internal police, was stationed right outside of the Algiers port, eavesdropping on a few French soldiers of the 1st Foreign Parachutist Regiment.
Whilst the night was filled with the lively aura of the metropolitan city, Oueidi was able to make out the following. "....De Gaulle..." "....Incompetent..." "...Fight..." "....Regardless..."
The reports were given back directly to the GPRA, suggesting that the French Military may be planning something devious, maybe even outside of the bounds of law.

UPDATE 25 : An Internal Referendum
Tumblr media
January 8th, 1961
Following immense pressure exerted by the UNHRC, UNSC, United States, and the global community against the French occupation of Algeria, as well as widespread protests concerning the economic, social, and mental well-being of French citizens amidst the conflict, De Gaulle has finally agreed to conduct an internal referendum within metropolitan France. The question on the ballot was:
"Do you approve the bill submitted to the French people by the President of the Republic and concerning the self-determination of the populations of Algeria and the organization of the public authorities in Algeria prior to self-determination?"
The results are as follows:
Mainland France:
58% YES
41% NO
1% INVALID / BLANK NOTES
Algerian territory 76% YES
24% NO
The results have dealt a considerable blow to the political will of the contiuance of the war. It's safe to say that De Gaulle may rethink his course of action before proceeding any further, much to the rage and dismay of the Generals and Officers of the army.
A particular Former General, Maurice Challe, has stated his open distrust for the ballot results:
"Lies, all lies! The foolish French government have been tricked into believing this farce. What an unbelievable incompetence.
