Think You Are Covered?
Please think again. Whether it is to save money or time, increasing numbers of people are shopping for and purchasing insurance online without ever talking to an agent. Unfortunately, this exercise leads to inadequate coverage more times than not. An example of this is a couple I spoke with just yesterday during a fund raiser in my community. They have a modest home that was worth $75,000 but they purchased it for only $45,000. Since its purchase, they have made some improvements and additions to the home. Just a month ago, they had their insurance company redo their coverage and their home was "valued" at  $75,000 and yes, that's the amount they were covered for. Come to find out, they were not covered for the replacement cost of the home which was estimated to be $125,000! On top of that, they had NO coverage for water damage! Shocked doesn't even describe how they felt upon learning this. Maybe it was a mistake on the part of the one that shopped for their insurance. Then again, it could have been a conscious effort to lower their premiums but in this instance, it appeared as if both were surprised. They allowed me to give them a quote and in the end, I was able to provide them with substantially better coverage and for just a little more than hey had been paying for the inadequate coverage. I cannot stress how important it is to have an agent in your corner when you need insurance of any kind. All of us have gone through rigorous training in order to provide our clients with the right coverage. No offense but, there are so many variables. Variables in your life and variables in the coverage that you need to be properly protected.  Far too many for most people to learn about and then apply to their circumstances. I cannot stress how important it is to sit down with an agent and let them review your needs. Sure, the first meeting might take a little of your time but after that, all that is needed is a yearly review or when you make any changes. Most of that can even be done over the phone.  Find an agent in your area. Google is a good place to start but friends and family might be the better source when looking for a trustworthy agent.

Heart Felt Plea
I understand why most would prefer not to think or talk about life insurance but believe me; you do not want to wait until a tragic event takes place before those you left behind are. By that time, the choices you made, or did not make, will be under scrutiny and possibly even causing great hardship. What I do not understand is this. We have all seen or heard about the hardships that befall those left having to figure out how to survive the loss of income from a bread winner. So why is this topic seemingly so verboten? I have lived this scenario and unfortunately, it revolved around the death of my oldest son. My son died just 2 blocks from his home while riding a motorcycle. He left behind a 14 month old little boy and a fiance' of 10 years. He also left behind a mortgage, funeral expenses and various other bills. His fiance' is now in the process of selling their house because she cannot afford the payments and I was left with the financial burden of paying for his funeral. I know that having life insurance would not have lessened the pain of losing my son but I can assure you, knowing that his fiance' and his little boy would not have to move and not worry about bills for the foreseeable future would have lessened the overall stress of his untimely loss. No matter how difficult this subject matter seems to be. Do not wait until that fateful day to wonder why it was not top of mind in your household. Talk about it and make a commitment to speak with your insurance agent about how you can protect yourselves. It won't cost you anything but a little bit of your time.
