INDIANWOMENBLOG.ORG: BREAST CANCER FIGHTER CHIARA D'AGOSTINO TALKS ABOUT HER MISSION OF BRINGING FLAT CHESTS IN VOGUE
IndianWomenBlog featured my story in October - I didn't come up with the title, but I love it!!
"Chiara D’Agostino’s life journey is not a usual cancer-surviving story. For an aspiring fashion model and traveler, the news of her medical condition was supposed to put a full stop to her dreams.
First, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Later, when she thought she had the situation under control and subsequently got herself breast implants, the infection of the foreign material spread through her body like an incurable virus that only worsened the health. Result – she had to get rid of her ‘new’ breasts for good.
But being a strong woman that she is, Chiara decided to not let any illness take over her dreams. As she gained confidence in herself, she actively began spreading the awareness about cancer through social media campaigns and ground activities. She even raised funds to help people dealing with this deadly illness." Continue reading here....

OPRAH MAGAZINE: OCTOBER 2017
In the October issue of Oprah magazine, the small print on page 87 reads: "I didn't decide to go flat at first; I wanted to look symmetrical. But then had six additional surgeries just for the implants because they got infected every other month. I feel better now without the implants. And I can feel people when I hug them."
Chiara D'Agostino, 45, diagnosed in 2014 with stage III triple negative breast cancer and in 2016 with stage IV triple negative metastatic breast cancer, which has spread to her lungs, sternum, lymph nodes and liver. This summer she had chemo again and took part in a drug trial.

THE ANTI-CANCER CLUB: HOW THE MO'HAIR FOUNDATION GAVE ME HOPE
Read the full article at Anti-Cancer Club
...Shedding my hair a second time, I knew what to expect physically, and this time, two years after my initial diagnosis, I am different emotionally. I told a friend that to avoid the trauma of watching my hair fall out from chemotherapy, I would get my head shaved; he suggested I donate my hair so that someone else could make a wig out of it. An appealing idea, I wondered if anyone had thought of creating wigs from one’s own hair – I wanted to wear a wig made out of MY OWN HAIR. During my two years as a cancer student, I hadn’t come across personalized wigs – just yet. Later that week, I serendipitously found myself at the Mo’Hair Foundation Fundraising Gala....

SHARECARE: 7 STUNNING TATTOOS WITH THE POWER TO HEAL
"I FEEL BEAUTIFUL AGAIN."
“I’m the flat woman,” says Chiara, a breast cancer survivor and author of Beauty Through the Beast, a blog about fighting cancer with beauty in mind. “To me, this photo exudes freedom. It illustrates the fact that we have choices and beauty has no boundaries. For example, some may choose reconstruction with beautiful tattoos, while others may not choose reconstruction at all and remain bare.”
“Our scars are not something to be ashamed of or hidden,” she continues. “In fact, they reveal our journey. When people see this photograph, I hope they see beauty in each of us; not just physically but, most importantly, the peace that we carry within.” Follow Chiara on Instagram @CancerBTTB.
“I’m the one with the tattoos,” says Allyson, a published alternative and pin-up model who raises breast cancer awareness through her work. “I had tattoos before cancer, so when this all happened—and I knew that I’d be having a bi-lateral mastectomy—there was no question in my mind; I wanted to tattoo something beautiful over what cancer had taken away.”
“This was my opportunity to take my body back,” she says. “Nothing compares to real breasts, but it has made looking in the mirror easier. I feel beautiful again. It's kind of like permanent lingerie.” Follow Allyson on Instagram @horror_cosmic.

The event will include a half mile march from the Hyatt Regency to the U.S. Capitol, a Die-In (hosted by MET Up) to represent the 113 individuals that die each day from MBC, and an educational briefing on patient protections in healthcare. The event will culminate in a day of team-based meetings with the offices of your Senators and House Representatives where we will educate them about stage IV MBC and ask them to support the community by facilitating additional funding for research, keeping vital patient protections in healthcare and improving access to treatments.
On Thursday October 12, METAvivor will host registration, a reception and a brief training session for individuals interested in learning more about the issues facing the community and how to effectively engage congressional staff. You do not need to be an expert in civics or government to help create positive change, you just need to stand up and speak out!

YOU RUN LIKE A GIRL
You Run Like a Girl - a series of portraits and interviews that showcase women's stories in hopes of empowering, influencing and connecting women around the world.
Your name/about yourself ? I'm Chiara D’Agostino - fashion model, Italophile, advocate and blogger at Beauty Through the Beast, living with metastatic triple negative breast cancer. My social media accounts are:
What do you do? Currently I’m a fashion model and breast cancer blogger/advocate at www.beautythroughthebeast.com. Before being diagnosed, I enjoyed teaching advanced Italian in public high school.
Why did you get into that? I got into teaching Italian because I was born Italian and went to Italy during the summers and fell in love with the language and culture. After being diagnosed with breast cancer I followed my dream of modeling and used my blog as a source of journaling, advocating and connecting with others diagnosed with breast cancer.
How did you get it started?  I started modeling after my hair started growing in natural hues of grey, and curly - I’d always wanted to model and after being diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, I decided to seize the moment and live my life fully, pushing aside any self doubts. The blog Beauty Through the Beast started in 2015 as a venue for self-expression and connecting.
Name 3 words to describe you best? Resilient, Fun, Genuine
Which females influence you the most? My close female friends, Oprah Winfrey, Mother Teresa, Holy Mary.
What struggles have you over come and how? I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, a very aggressive form of breast cancer with no known cure, in 2014, a month after my dad passed away. I underwent chemotherapy, 2 single mastectomies, reconstruction with multiple implant infections and exchange surgeries, became metastatic, had radiation therapy, explant surgery, 8 months of immunotherapy and am now on chemotherapy for the second time, losing my hair again. I seize the moment, cry, scream, write, scribble, play, walk in nature, take medications prescribed by my doctor, meditate, do yoga, chi kung, art therapy, stress management, individual therapy, support group, attend seminars, conferences, speak at conferences, volunteer at breast cancer events, get massages, Reiki, acupuncture, energy healing, see a Shaman…..mostly, prayer, friends, love and playing with children and pets.
How do you stay positive and focused? I communicate my feelings and try not to judge myself. I rely on friends, prayer, meditation, medication, nature, children and my cats :)
Any words of advice for future girl bosses following in your footsteps? Listen to your gut/higher self, network as much as possible, be kind, have clear boundaries and express them, do good, don’t give up but know when it’s time to move on.
What is one quote you stand by? “Be yourself no matter what they say”

SMARTBRIDGE
SmartBridge Health swooped in at the right time!
Recently diagnosed with stage 4 triple-negative breast cancer, my oncologist gave me a list of eighty-four clinical trials to pick from. Distressed, I didn’t know where to start and every place I turned to for help fell short - what medical specialist could help me narrow down this search? In person, oncologists specialize only the trials conducted at the medical facility where they work – I was looking for an un-biased specialist with a bird’s eye view.
Serendipitously, SmartBridge found ME through my breast cancer blog Beauty Through the Beast and I jumped at the opportunity to receive an expert second opinion. Dr. Jeremy Force from Duke University called me that afternoon to introduce himself and learn my questions – I felt heard. Dr. Force offered to provide me a list of his top five choices of clinical trials best suited for me after reviewing my medical records and attending that week’s American Society of Clinical Oncology conference – a sigh of relief!
Simultaneously, I visited NYC specialists and signed consent for the exact type of clinical trial that Dr. Force highlighted in his comprehensive consult, cementing my decision.
What a great service to be able to share with cancer patients that reach out via my blog seeking advice but limited in resources due to geographic location, we can rest assured knowing that an expert second opinion by Smartbridge Health is just a phone call away!
