The Whaley House

A brief history; Thomas and Anna Whaley purchased the property in September of 1855 and it was finished roughly 2 years later. Throughout the years, and after a short time in San Francisco, the Whaley’s produced 5 children (6 when you include thomas who died at 18 months). The surviving kin were named Francis, Anna, George, Violet and Corinne. In 1882, Violet and Anna Whaley were both married to different men, but it didn’t turn out to be happily ever after for the both of them. After a humiliating divorce to her husband, Violet shot herself in her upstairs bedroom in 1885. After the tragic event, Thomas Whaley moved the family out of the house and left it vacant for years. It wasn’t until Francis Whaley restored the property in 1909, that the Whaley’s had stepped foot in their childhood home. Anna and her children, (Corinne, Francis and George), all lived in the house until old age claimed their lives.

My Experiences

If you grew up in San Diego, there’s no doubt that you had a field trip to one of the most haunted homes in America. Even as a kid, I knew there was something eerie about that house in Old Town, San Diego. That house never ceases to surprise me in the paranormal department. I’ve seen orbs fly by on multiple occasions, so quickly that before I could even reach for my camera, it had already vanished into the walls. Cold spots that flood over you and linger for just enough time to give you the chills. The heaviness of Violet’s spirit  is everywhere on the second story. From the theater room to her old room, I’ve felt an overwhelming sadness that could almost bring me to tears. 

The last time I was at the Whaley house, was probably the most active that I’ve ever actually felt it. In the kitchen downstairs, my family and I followed a cold spot that moved around the kitchen (and us) for about 15 minutes until it finally left. My mom’s always been a bit of the skeptic, so she wasn’t really buying any of it. Either way I was having way too much fun to listen to debbie downer. Upstairs in the theater room was where I saw the first orb of the day (all together there was 2). My aunt and I were looking through her camera to see if she had caught anything cool or at least out of the ordinary, when out of the corner of my eye, I saw a tiny light on stage. Glancing up, I saw it make a small u turn and dart behind a chair (mind you this was a BREIF glance). I was stoked to see an orb because at this point it was something I had never actually seen before and those words don’t come out of my mouth very often. A little while later, my mom and I were downstairs near the parlor. We were talking about what we had seen today, (for her absolutely nothing), and our conclusions. Just as she was about to rain on my parade, a small ball of light darted over our heads and into the wall. For a moment, we kind of just stood there staring at each other. Neither of us really willing to ask, “Holy shit, did you just see that?” Needless to say, we all walked out of there with our own ghost story to tell.
