although secret cinema has been in this industry for over a quarter century, the multifaceted dutch dj, producer, and owner of gem records is continuously learning from his peers. until this last month, jeroen verheij has played everywhere around the world except for north america, but has come to celebrate his anniversary in the business with the special release of “silver box,” a compilation of his entire discography of 25 years in music and documentary of his career.
the people that book secret cinema really need to investigate who he is since he’s not on billboards or advertised as dramatically as other artists. having come from a time where no one thought techno was music, he finds that there’s a perpetual need to reinvent himself all the time. “sometimes I hear a certain type of music and think it’s bringing a new edge to electronic music, but I let things happen in a more natural way and collaborate with others if I think it’s within reach.” by finding new talent through his highly respected booking agency and having younger artists around him, jeroen discloses that it keeps him fresh since they can teach him what he doesn’t know, while in return, he can mentor and guide them with what he has already learned through experience. even if he did rocket launch these newcomers into a certain career, he also benefits from it.
although there are no words or melody, jeroen believes that you can still hear talent through techno. in fact, he discovered artists like egbert and enrico sangiuliano before their big breakthrough. regardless of who you are or what you do, there are always true friends that are meant to come into your path at a certain flow and time in your life. the dreamer and “super pisces” veteran artist has always worked alone, but finds that synergistic energy in creating magic in an album with another person is a rarity that shouldn’t be taken for granted. “you’ll never grow if you don’t surround yourself with new people and new ideas.”
happy with the way everything has gone over the past 25 years, jeroen has noticed that the most humble, laidback musicians in the industry are those in the techno world. “it’s easy to lose yourself if you grow into having all the luxuries, but I’d rather have taste than all the money in the world.” if he had a chance, the grateful artist wouldn’t start all over or change a thing. “I really love the time we are in. I cannot deny it. in which era of time could you fly around the whole world or play a note on the piano on a laptop?” for the younger generation or anyone looking to find their purpose in life, jeroen has some words for you: “drop your television, play your video games, watch beautiful movies, and create art with the people around you. if you live your life truly and honestly, happiness will come and find you.” support the techno guru on facebook and soundcloud.

the irish boss and founder of octopus recordings, sian, has always been an explosive force of energy in the techno and electronic music world. recognized for his unconventional and hypnotic techno beats, he’s made a name for himself by creating this self-expressive, exhilarating brand that has bred talented and formerly unknown artists into the spotlight. after a successful decade under this label, sian is delivering even more signature tunes, starting with the release of his next studio album, capital crimewave.
born in ireland and raised in southern spain, sian is a nonconformist who stands out for his distinct, unique sound that’s identified for its dark, twisted techno beats. after roaming and touring around the world for years, he’s always fantasized about living in los angeles, and now that he’s made a home there, it’s been a dream. with a lust for adventure, nature, and marine biology, what better place is there for the bohemian artist to be? shielded amongst his tattoos, sian chooses his pieces of art based on life experiences and family. one of his most coveted ones on his arm is nosce te ipsum, which means “know thyself” in latin. success and fortune can easily change a person’s heart and character, but for the pragmatic producer, it’s essential to express yourself and stay loyal to who you are.
after his album tour kicked off on march 10, sian made a pit stop in south beach for miami music week. although it’s not his first time playing or attending the notorious party playground, he planned on making his experience different by immersing himself within a new crowd: the commercial edm folks versus all the underground techno and house artists, since he already knows them fairly well. with so much raw talent and inventiveness, there’s no doubt that his original tracks will climb to the top of the beatport charts once more. be on the lookout for his new releases on his top-selling techno label, and stay up-to-date with the revered dj and producer on soundcloud and facebook.

the candid dj and producer, darius syrossian, is a renowned figure in the electronic music scene who’s as real as it gets and holds nothing back when it comes to his opinions on music and where humanity is heading. he’s toured extensively and vigorously in his career, especially throughout the countries of europe, but the seasoned british artist is ready to import his exhilarating tunes and establish a deeper relationship with more visits to the usa.
as a youngster who was one of four boys, darius left the war back in iran and started a new life abroad in manchester. the artist has armenian and iranian roots, so naturally when he came to england, his parents wanted their family to fit in as much as possible. he first listened to indie electronic music driving around with his uncle in iran, but it wasn’t until he heard it in the uk where he knew that this is what he wanted to do with his life. he was so passionate about the music that he worked nearly for free in a local records store for 15 years before embarking on his expedition as an internationally acclaimed artist. he held the sunday residency of do not sleep at space ibiza by doing 19 shows in its final year, and his releases have been consistently riding high at the top of the beatport charts. some of his strongest mixes to date include balance presents do not sleep compilation as well as the bbc radio one essential mix.
the avid traveler spends 6 months out of the year in uk and the other 6 months in ibiza, a place that has been slightly tarnished with the influx of everything vip, but with enough underground sound to keep it alive. “there’s only two types of music: good music and bad music. everything is so formulated to fit within a certain genre. it’s frustrating to see how everyone is conditioned to eat in a certain way, drink in a certain way, listen to music in a certain way. . . it’s like we’re all robots.” aside from making or playing music, the man of many passions finds himself to be full of joy when he’s cooking, painting, or playing soccer. in another life, darius imagines that he’d probably be a chef, graphic designer, or illustrator, which he also holds a degree in. the curious figure is a fan of history, attesting that he’d love to “be a fly in the wall and see what it was like during the times of the alexander the great and how the european renaissance happened.”
currently, the hardworking dj and producer is enjoying the journey of where life is taking him, and encourages others to not hold goals or expectations when it comes to their passions and ambitions. “it’s human instinct to always want more and reach a certain stage. do what you enjoy and with people you like and you’ll have a good time.” the straightforward, quick thinker acknowledges that he speaks his mind a lot, but feels that you’re living in a prison if you’re walking on eggshells all the time. “it doesn’t matter what people think. it only matters what you think about how you feel about yourself in your own skin. there’s a saying that ‘it only takes 6 people to carry a coffin,’ meaning that the only thing that matters are the people around you who you can trust and love.”
in this day and age, people can be forced to think in a certain way and identify a distinct genre, but the sincere artist states that he’s just here to make good electronic music by bringing people of all backgrounds together and creating something that connects with the dance floor. “house music is about soul, and techno is about energy. there’s no way that a ‘new’ version of house or dance music can be created, for house music and techno are bigger than all of us and rooted deep into the ground like the stalk of a tree.” regardless of what corner of the earth he’s playing, the fiercely loyal man believes that house music is an international language that’s for everyone around the world.
aside from being a touring dj, the workaholic runs parties as well as the label do not sleep with releases in both digital and vinyl formats. compared to his upbeat tracks on the sankeys 20th anniversary album, darius plans on bringing in more downtempo, breaks, and varied kinds of stuff in his next album, as well as more opportunities to see him perform in the states, starting with the launch of dns in new york in december 2016 for a quarterly residency along with the launch of dns at halcyon in san francisco in march. some upcoming releases of his productions include: andrea oliva’s – jungle party (darius syrossian remix) on kaluki musik; ray okpara – satin curtain (darius syrossian remix) on mobilee; and darius syrossian – unicorn zone ep on 20:20 vision. catch him play locally at treehouse this december 15, and be sure to support the enthusiastic artist now on soundcloud and facebook.

after some personal blockades held him back during his young pivotal years, bryan miraben is one of a few musicians who bloomed in the local miami scene later in life. aside from being a devoted father with a good-hearted, warm soul, he prides himself on being a transparent artist who keeps it real by sharing his personal life with fans through social media and delivering heart-pounding and bass-heavy, yet blissful tunes. he works as a professional dj known by the moniker, leyva, which holds homage to his mother’s maiden name.
having a mother as a pianist and a father with a vast collection of vinyls, bryan was constantly surrounded by music as he grew up in the rough neighborhoods of newark, new jersey. he learned to play instruments like the congas, timbales, bongos, and guitar throughout the course of his life, and is currently studying the piano. with influential vibes ranging from hip hop to reggae and salsa to classic rock, bryan describes his flexible musical tastes like the cuban expression, “arroz con mango,” which translates to how mango and rice don’t really go together, but somehow in the end, they work. after moving to miami during high school, he found himself interested in animation and leaned more towards graphic design, acquiring collegiate degrees in both fields. although he’s always been one to “grab life by the horns” and embrace music as a broad part of his life, bryan had to put everything on hold in order to raise a family.
residing in little havana and among the rich latin culture has always stimulated his senses in unconventional ways, like waking up to the tribal rhythms blaring from the cigar shop’s speakers across the street. he nurtured his passion for music by occasionally djing house parties, and under the relentless pressure of his close friends, he decided to go pro. nevertheless, his career has recently started to take a full leap with multiple wmc bookings and gigs across venues like trade, nikki beach, heart, space, tba in brooklyn, and even internationally with performances in mexico. he’s takes nothing for granted and has remained humble throughout his short career, realizing that he’s had the ability to play in venues new dj’s could only dream of.
the passionate artist describes his sound as “like a traditional nyc or chicago underground warehouse with an original house vibe that miami sort of lacks,” which tends to be shaped by everything techno and “all black everything” at times. places like nyc, chicago, and detroit don’t change because the house music culture will never get lost there, but you can still seek out that authentic house music vibe here today with local artists like roland and jesse perez. “in my opinion, electronic dance music is not truly organic music – it’s all blares. it’s so important to me to get that house sound back. I love and appreciate techno, but it’s taken a stronghold. it’s the new edm.” the old-school deep house guy appreciates legendary house artists like roger sanchez, todd terry, felix da housecat, erick morillo, and harry romero, and especially savors strong songs that have vocals since they bring everything together, for “people can communicate with vocals like nothing else.”
it can be disputed that whatever you eat, drink, read, and breathe shapes you as a person for the better or the worse. if leyva had a chance, he’d go back to relive hip hop in the early 90’s. “back then, it was rough in the streets, but at least you were able to turn it around. now, they celebrate the negativity. every song sounds the same, and there’s no lesson in hip hop anymore. it’s also odd to hear how so many people hate on house music, usually because they’re in favor of hip hop. they seem to forget that house originated from hip hop, so they share the same roots.” even so, he’s a firm believer that as long as your music taste is phenomenal, he doesn’t care how you play your music, whether that be usb, laptop, cdj’s, or vinyl. the selfless character ventures to help anyone make it and get through the barriers in this industry, even where under a sunny city full of shady people, it can be very hard to trust others who vie to get their piece of the pie and make it to the top.
within the next few years, leyva hopes to be recognized as a key figure in the scene. through his active role in social media, the free-spirited musician connects with his supporters on an intimate level through instagram, snapchat, and facebook. “I want fans to know who I am. studying graphic design and animation has helped me control my image from the beginning and portray my authentic self as a musician, father, and human being.” with the help, advice, and push from his manager, juan fonseca, he plans on releasing his first few tracks by winter music conference in 2017, and is currently working on expanding and taking his sound beyond state lines more frequently. “I’ve been very lucky to be in a day job that supports me and the dreams that I’m chasing.” the well-loved dj and producer has had support from the very beginning, and finds that every step forward is a small victory. although the busy dad has a side job in the corporate world, he manages to hold everything together through balance, stating that even through all his versatile roles, “the hardest job is raising a good kid in a cruel world.” you can catch the dj perform at american social in brickell every friday night and weekly at coco.fm. support the fresh artist through his personal site and social outlets of instagram & facebook.

@andhim_music ~ "it often has this crossover type of style that's evolving and changing all the time. because we're surrounded by so many influences, moods, and things that can change from month to month, we never know what's going to come out in the studio. we just feel the music and interpret the sounds, so we came up with 'superhouse,' which has described it pretty well."

the german friends, music enthusiasts, and brotherly lovers have been fruitful in their productions and djing endeavors these past few years, with the usa and germany holding as their largest markets. the ultimate gift they’ve sought to give to their fans is to make them smile and have a good time, while hoping to share with their audiences around the world how love, music, and the love of music can bind people together.
although both came from hip hop backgrounds, simon and tobias joined forces as andhim to cultivate and release authentic, organic electronic music tracks before even premiering together as a dj duo. “when we both started, we were both more into different sounds that has gotten deeper for sure.” it’s difficult to describe the unique yet simple sound, let alone identify the genre that the cologne natives create, for it’s discernible to hear if a track is produced by andhim or someone else. “it often has this crossover type of style that’s evolving and changing all the time. because we’re surrounded by so many influences, moods, and things that can change from month to month, we never know what’s going to come out in the studio. we just feel the music and interpret the sounds, so we came up with ‘superhouse,’ which has described it pretty well.”
house music has revolutionized into a plethora of mini genres that has made the partners in crime wonder what it would’ve been like to live in another era where labels didn’t matter or exist. if he had a choice, tobias would choose to revel in “the interesting decade of the 70’s that’s acclaimed for music like disco and psychedelic rock,” and also around the time when the first synthesizers came out. on the other hand, simon would savor the “crazy 80’s” era and enjoy listening to music one can actually sing along to. “it’s pure nostalgia resinging the same songs as when you were a kid.” after recently attending his first hip hop party in 10 years, simon found it to be quite shocking without any rhythm or blues and brimming with lots of bass and trap. they’re melodies that have lost a bit of the original soul and can sound, at times, like “cold beats.” it’s another genre that has transformed for the better or worse, but a positive outcome is that there’s a huge variety now, like east coast style versus west coast style and even with some innovators using beats from the 90’s in a well-produced, modern way.
during their downtime, you can catch the big foodies cooking with friends and living a quiet and simply humble life. since their most valued possessions are their fridges, perhaps in another life, the whimsical buddies would survive and feast around the world as professional food critics. whatever happens within the next few years, they hope to still be happy and most importantly, keeping fighting for their creativity. they’ve always been very serious when it came to music, and at this point, admit that they’re even more focused on releasing super high-quality tracks.
aside from their renowned themed parties they’re known to host, andhim have decided to release a new label that embraces good vibes and friendship in an intimate atmosphere called superfriends. the new record label will hold as a playground for their style and type of music that’ll be a home for their vision of electronic music. watch out for their first release on 5 december, and support the satiric boys now on facebook and soundcloud.

coco hara is a miami native who never imagined herself captivating the crowds behind the decks with her bright personality, lively spirit, and fun taste in diversified music. the spunky female dj has performed across various venues as her charming self with nothing to hide, playing tracks everywhere from house and old school to hip hop and trap.
although she admits that she was a geek at heart who loved math, coco hara became the cool girl at school who djed all the college parties at emory university in atlanta. she flourished in the atl scene and moved her way up across town, fruitful enough that she had the chance to put on shows and travel all over the country on the weekends. while attending college there, she majored in finance and minored in film and media management, which has helped her take advantage of both the corporate and publicity side of the entertainment business. upon graduating, she worked part-time as a dj and full-time as a financial advisor at ubs. even though she landed such a favorable role others would vie to get, she went on a whim and moved to los angeles soon after to start a dj duo group with a friend. after much prosperity opening up for acclaimed artists like porter robinson, a-trak, and armin van buuren, the family-oriented girl ultimately moved back to miami to be closer to home, launch her career even further, and travel here, there, and everywhere.
since atlanta is a huge part of her upbringing, coco cherishes the downtime she has with other musical genres, like hip hop and indie folk. whenever she’s not entertaining mass amounts of people, she refines her skills on the piano and drums, boxes, and works as an assistant coach for a local high school basketball team. she aspires to find fulfillment with the constant mental stimulation that she so greatly needs by keeping busy and searching for “the next big thing” that can refine her career.
despite the fact that the well-educated chick has already made a name for herself across town and around the country, she reveals that she’s always wanted to be an entrepreneur, perhaps like the female version of don draper in mad men. “those were lighter times back in the ’60’s, just smoking and drinking while listening to frank sinatra.” regardless if she’s a famous dj or not, coco hopes to be just as happy and passionate about whatever she may be pursuing in the future. “I want to be at a point where I feel like I accomplished something while still making a difference and benefiting something else.” whatever her future or next job turns out to be, she lives by the fact that everything happens for a reason and that there can never be any regrets. you can catch the bubbly star at her two new weekly residencies: ora nightclub and nina’s house at the confidante hotel. support the artist now on facebook and soundcloud.
