How UK University Grades Are Calculated
Navigating the UK university grading system can be complex for international students.   Understanding how grades are calculated, the components contributing to final marks, and the credit transfer requirements can significantly impact academic success. In this article, Bearing Academy co-founder Johnny Cheung provides an in-depth look at these aspects, helping Hong Kong students excel in their university studies.
Understanding the UK Grading System
The UK grading system is unique and differs significantly from other educational systems worldwide. Understanding the various grade classifications and their corresponding percentage ranges is essential to navigating your academic path effectively.
First Class (First): 70% and above
Upper Second Class (2:1): 60-69%
Lower Second Class (2:2): 50-59%
Third Class (Third): 40-49%
Pass: 35-39% (some universities)
Fail: Below 40%
These classifications help gauge a student's academic performance and are critical in determining future academic and career opportunities.
Components of UK University Grades
UK universities, such as the University of Bristol, University College London, and the University of Manchester, use a comprehensive approach to evaluate student performance. This approach includes  grading several components, each contributing to the final grade:
Coursework includes essays, reports, projects, and other assignments completed during the semester. These tasks assess students' understanding of the subject matter and their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios. Originality and adherence to academic integrity are paramount.
Examinations typically hold significant weight in the final grade. They can be written, oral, or practical and are designed to test students' knowledge and problem-solving abilities under time constraints.
Continuous Assessment includes quizzes, assignments, class participation, and group work. This ongoing evaluation ensures students remain engaged throughout the course and consistently apply their learning.
Final Year Dissertation/Thesis is a comprehensive research project crucial in determining the final grade. It showcases a student's ability to conduct independent research and contribute to their field.
The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge assess student performance mainly through examinations. Students should carefully check the grading policies of their targeted university on their websites to understand the specific components and their weightings.

Which A-Levels or IB Subjects Should I Take If I Want to Study Law in Universities?
Choosing the right subjects during your A-Levels or International Baccalaureate (IB) can significantly impact your chances of attending a top law school. For aspiring law students, selecting subjects that develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and a solid understanding of societal structures is essential. In this article, Bearing Academy consultant in Legal Zaheed Evans explores the A-Levels and IB subjects recommended for future law studies.
Understanding the Requirements
Law schools generally seek students with strong academic records and a demonstrated ability to think critically and communicate effectively. While specific requirements vary by university, most law programmes emphasise the importance of subjects that foster analytical and writing skills.
It is essential to research the specific requirements of the universities you are interested in. Some universities might have preferred subjects or additional requirements. For instance, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge often look for candidates with a background in traditional academic subjects.

When Should I Start Looking for UK University Applications for 2024/2025 Entry
For students soon to start their A-Levels, it is an exciting and pivotal moment in their lives as they must focus on planning their university studies while tackling public exams.  Understanding the UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) application timeline is essential for those aiming to study at a university in the UK to avoid any last-minute rush and anxiety.     In this article, Bearing Academy co-founder David Wong outlines the critical steps in the UCAS application process for 2024/2025 entry, providing invaluable guidance for prospective students.
Understanding the UCAS Application Process
The UCAS system is a centralised service through which students can apply for undergraduate courses at UK universities using a single application form. Starting the process early is crucial to ensure all application components are completed accurately and on time.
UK universities use combined methods to evaluate undergraduate applicants' academic performance during UCAS applications:
Predicted Grades: These grades, provided by the applicant's school or college, provide universities with an estimate of the grades the applicant is expected to achieve in their final exams.
Academic History: Applicants must include details of their academic history in their UCAS application, including GCSEs and any other qualifications they have completed.
Personal Statement: While not strictly an academic measure, the personal statement allows students to reflect on their academic endeavours, highlight study achievements, and demonstrate their passion for the chosen field of study.
Teacher References:  These references provide insight into the applicant’s academic abilities, work ethic, and suitability for higher education.
Entrance Exams: Some courses and universities require additional entrance exams depending on the undergraduate courses applicants aim for, such as The BioMedical Admission Test (BMAT), University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT), The Law National Aptitude Test (LNAT), and Sixth Term Examination Papers (STEP) for Mathematics. These scores can be crucial for admissions decisions. These additional entrance exams are typically taken in the months leading to the UCAS application deadlines.
Interviews: For certain courses, particularly at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, interviews form a significant part of the assessment process.  Generally, universities conduct applicant interviews in December following the October application deadline.

Deciding Between an MBA and a Master’s in Cybersecurity or Cyber Law for Aspiring Computer Science Graduates
“I’m considering applying for my master’s degree, but I don’t know where to start.  I’m studying an undergraduate computer science programme and am doing well in programming and algorithms.  I’m interested in Cybersecurity and Cyber Law, but I would also like to pursue a career as an entrepreneur.  Shall I choose an MBA, a Master’s Degree in Cybersecurity, or a Master’s Degree in Cyber Law?  Would it be too niche if I choose a Master’s in Cybersecurity?
- An undergraduate student in Computer Science
Choosing the right graduate programme is crucial for undergraduate students who excel in their studies and want to advance their careers.   In this article, Bearing Academy consultant Salman Ahmad examines whether an MBA or a specialised master’s degree benefits this undergraduate Computer Science student and how to make an informed decision.
Understanding Your Interests and Your Strengths
Your strengths in programming and algorithms align well with Cybersecurity and Cyber Law.  These fields are growing rapidly, offering numerous opportunities for tech-savvy individuals.  However, an MBA can provide the business acumen for entrepreneurial ventures or leadership roles in large conglomerates.

I hold a Hong Kong Associate Degree in Business Studies and I plan to advance my academic qualifications by applying for an MBA.  How shall I plan?”
 -  a Hong Kong student holding an associate's degree in business studies.
Understanding the Transition from Associate Degree to MBA
Transiting from an associate degree directly to a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) is not the typical path, as most MBA programmes require a bachelor’s degree. Here is how you can navigate this journey.
Credit Transfers:  Look for institutions that offer credit transfers from your associate degree to a bachelor’s programme.  Universities in Hong Kong including the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Metropolitan University, Hong Kong Baptist University, City University of Hong Kong, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University offer credit transfers for associate degree holders applying for their undergraduate programmes in Business Studies.  Various universities overseas also have the same arrangement.  This can significantly reduce the time required to complete your bachelor’s degree.   Alternatively, consider online or part-time bachelor’s programmes that allow you to work while studying.
