Episode 255 - Be Careful with Conflicting Feelings
Jodi Sta. Maria's face in the very beginning of this was oddly memorable, because the pure disgust...it's so funny. Second episode I'm translating, this time when he introduces her as his girlfriend to everyone.
youtube
Maya is standing and Richard looks at her in a loving gaze, only for him to be called by a co-worker.
Co-Worker: Richard! Forgive me if I didn't greet you earlier.
The co-worker kisses Richard on the cheek. Maya looks positively disgusted; someone's a little jealous.
Co-Worker: Gina is sending her regards, by the way. Richard: Send her my regards as well. Co-Worker: You know what, I really think this event will be successful. Richard: Well, we've all been working very hard on it. Co-worker: You especially! Richard: All of us. Excuse me for a moment. Maya, come? I'd like you to meet our engineers. Um, everyone, this is Maya, my girlfriend. You remember Sunny, of course. Maya: Oh yeah, we saw each other earlier. Richard: Oh, and I believe you haven't met Engineer Gutierrez. Gutierrez: Hi Ma'am. Maya: Hello. Richard: And this in Engineer Sunez. Sunez: Hi Ma'am. Richard: They're all very hard-working. The overtime just keeps coming for them. Maya: Just don't worry! Kapit bisig^ during difficult times and kapit bisig in times of triumph. (I can't quite understand her here, unfortunately.) Right, Sir Chief? Richard: Yes. Gutierrez: Well, Chief, is there a bonus this time? Richard: Of course! Gutierrez: Perfect! Mr. Yamaguchi is going to be very happy, he can finally get his videoke machine.
In the corner, you can see Richard's two closest work confidants: his assistant, Liza, and his friend, Ryan.
Ryan: So, how are those two? Liza: Like always, very happy.
The scene changes to the mansion. Nicolo and Nikki are staring at each other for the B plot of these two.
Nicolo: Hey, Nik-Nik. Nikki: I can't join you, baby, because I still have stuff to do. Luke: What happened, bro? Why is Nikki mad at you too? Nicolo: I don't know. Luke: Well, let's just go baby, let's go.
The scene transfers back to the hanger.
Ryan: Do you remember that, brud? Maya: You told me that Manang Fe let you in. Richard: That was just one time. She was sleeping so I had to sleep somewhere else. Liza: Excuse me sir, we start in two hours so we haev to prepare. Maya, if you need to get ready, I arranged a hotel room for you. Maya: Sir Chief— Richard: I'll have Len drop you off. Maya: What about you? Richard: I'll be here with Ryan. Liza: Okay, let's go. Hurry! See you sir.
Back to the house, Nikki's 'stuff she needed to do' turned out to be watching Luke and Nicolo.
Nikki: Well, he doesn't really look all that sad. Stacy: What, really? Nikki: Yeah, he's laughing with my brother. Stacy: Maybe he's not affected. Boys move on pretty quickly. Nikki: But he really liked her. Abby: Ate Nikki! Nikki: Wait, uh Stace, I'll call you later. Uh, bye. Oh, baby why are you here? Abby: I was looking for you! Nikki: What, why? Abby: It's because you were alone. Nikki: Oh, okay baby, follow me! Let's get snacks.
In San Nicolas, Kute and Cho are in the house. Cho looks like he's doing some homework.
Kute: Oh, look how hard working my son is! Oh, what happened to your pencil? Why does it look like that? Cho: Oh, um, you see, it's because...he broke...I mean, it's because I broke it. My classmates and I were playing around. Kute: Cho, let's talk. Cho, there's nothing wrong with playing but you guys need to be careful with your stuff, like your pencil. It's ruined, isn't it? Cho: Sorry, mom. Kute: I don't want this to happen again, okay? Cho: Okay. Oh, that's wrong. Kute: Cho, use that to erase.
Back to the mansion.
Nikki: Yes, dad, we're fine back here. We're okay. Good luck to your launch, dad. Luke & Abby: Good luck, dad! Nicolo: Good luck, tito! Nikki: Bye dad. Abby: Nicolo, are you going home now? Nicolo: Not yet, baby, I still haven't made it even. Abby: You guys are still going to play? Yay! Nikki, we can join them now! Nikki: Huh? Abby: Didn't you wanna join them? Nikki: What makes you say that, Baby? Abby: because you were watching them earlier! Nikki: Ah, umm? I was just curious because I'm good at video games and playing at the arcade, I was just wondering if I would be good at basketball too. Nicolo: Awesome, you're going to play! Nikki: Ah, no, I changed my mind. Luke: Ah, Niks, you can't change your mind. Give Nicolo a chance, he's heartbroken, isn't he? Nikki: Fine, we'll play. Luke: There, now we can play! Nicolo: You did say that, huh? You'll see, I'll beat you. Luke: No, I think I'll win. Nicolo: Nah, you're just going to get embarrassed by me again.
To the hotel room where Maya and Liza are getting ready for the launch.
Liza: Maya, I want you to know that I'll be at the table right next to you if you'll be needing anything, okay? Maya: Okay! Liza: and do you need help with your dress? Maya: No, Liza, I'm good! Liza: Oh, and don't do your makeup. I'll do it for you. Maya: Sure! Liza: I have to warn you, if there's a group of girls coming to interrogate you, please ignore them completely. Don't let them intimidate you at all! Oh my, Maya, you're so beautiful! You don't need my help at all!
Back to the basketball game at the house. Everyone is gathered and Joma is playing too! It goes well for the first bit, the four of them playing and various cheering comes from the sidelines. Nikki somehow trips on nothing and falls herself, causing panic. Everyone except Nicolo leaves to get a first aid kit and some ice.
Nikki: You know, I want to hate you. You're the reason I'm playing basketball, but it's okay, I don't want you to think that nobody cares. Nicolo: Wow, huh? I'm touched. Nikki: Whatever! Nicolo: We should get medicine for this. Nikki: Stop it! Don't touch it! Nicolo: Sorry, sorry! NikkI: So, how are you? Nicolo: Here, still handsome. Nikki: Not that kind of how are you. Are you still affected by Aira? Nicolo: Of course. Nikki: Do you love her? Nicolo: You're really asking me if I love Aira? Nikki: I was just curious. Nicolo: Nik-Nik, what kind of question is that? Nikki: It doesn't require an answer anyway. Nicolo: But you know, now that you're asking me that...I don't really know the answer to either. Nikki: What? Nicolo: Yeah, I don't know if I love her still because it was better when we were just best friends. I don't know. Nikki: Perhaps, you really don't love her? Nicolo: Maybe? But why does it still hurt? Nikki: Ouch. Nicolo: Really, Nik-Nik? Ouch? Nikki: Not that kind of ouch! My foot hurts! Nicolo: Sorry, sorry, just deal with it for a bit. For me, my heart really hurts but I'm pushing through it! Luke: Joma, hurry up! Manang Fe: Where? Luke: Here, Manang Fe. Manang Fe: Hold on! Where, where? Nicolo: For injuries, where is it? Luke: Doris, Sabel, can you get the band-aid? Quickly! Nikki: Ouch, brother! Manang Fe: Look at what you're doing to your sister! Where does it hurt? Here! Open that and put it there.
Back to the hanger.
Liza: Look at that, they're all here. Good evening. Maya, is it okay if I leave you? I have to go around and see if everything is in order. Maya: Okay, sure. Liza: Enjoy! (Miscellaneous chatter between the engineers that I didn't translate, Maya is taking pictures with her little blackberry.) Maya: Oh, engineer Yamaguchi. All: Hello Ma'am. Gutierrez: Hi Ma'am Maya. Maya: Oh, engineer Gutierrez, you look nervous. Gutierrez: A little, ma'am. Maya: Nothing a smile won't fix. Gutierrez: Thank you, ma'am. Maya: Ah, excuse me, okay? Richard: we've already started the green mro in all our different sites but not all of their tools updated 100%, but with this one it's all updated. (More miscellaneous chatter) Assistant: Excuse me, sir, we're about to start. You need to head onto the stage now. Richard: Thank you. Assistant: Good evening everyone, let's give a round of applause as we welcome the Chief Executive Officer of Lim Aviation, Mr. Richard Lim for his opening remarks. Richard: Good Evening everyone. We could have been here five years ago, that was Lim Aviation's original plan, but the project such as this is never easy. This requires a lot of work, preparation, and study because change is never easy. It took some time before we got everything right and even then, something always came up; another problem, another hurdle, the timing was never right. Until we realized, there's no such thing as perfect timing. One could never foresee, let alone prepare for everything. More than the research and the numbers, what we needed was a leap of faith. Faith that change can be good, faith that this project is worth it, faith that whatever happens, we can and we will get through it. Ultimately, it is our faith in each other that will ensure the success in this endeavor. So tonight, we are celebrating not just the launch of this new hanger but the courage it took to believe in something worthwhile; to fight for it and to work for it. with that, I would like to thank everyone that took that leap of faith with me: our staff, our engineers, everyone, including our families. Physics makes our planes fly, but it is the people we love who make our planes soar.
Other people start to speak after Richard's remarks, but Ricky and Maya are looking at each other instead of really completely listening.
Executive: Tonight, we are gathered to witness another milestone for Lim Aviation Service, I always thought that Richard Lim was a man of big vision. I remember he was around 24 or was it 23? When he came up to me when he's transferring to MRO Business, i did not know if he was taking my advice or just informing me. Well, he was simply informing me...(unsure what he's saying here) MRO is a giant industry. it is not a place for newly graduated students such as Ricky...
Maya: Sir Chief? Congratulations. Richard: Thank you.

Episode Notes
^Everyone who knows this show knows that Kapit Bisig is Maya's favorite phrase ever since her father said it. In literal translation, she's essentially she's saying 'with linked arms' but you can also say 'working in unity'. I like the phrase so I don't tend to translate it, but that's what it means!

be careful with my heart (2012)
This is probably an incredibly niche interest, but as with most bright ideas of the 5am origin, I'm going to try to translate Be Careful with My Heart (yes, the 2012 Filipino teleserye) into English.
I can't necessarily throw in subtitles into a video itself (at least, not at this moment) but I'm hoping that it can make this series accessible for those who may not be able to understand Tagalog. :)
For now, I'm just going to translate the episodes I want to do the most, but if this gets any level of interest, I'll try to do them chronologically.
For now, thank you for stopping by!

Episode 297 - Be Careful with the Proposal
My first attempt at translating, this time during the proposal on the boat. I don't actually know if there are titles to this, I do know that the first fifty or so do. I'll just make them up as I go.
youtube
Maya is on a dinner boat cruise, anxiously waiting for Richard. She's looking around, before finally opting to rise in search of him.
Maya: Where did Sir Chief go?
Maya bumps into a waiter, grabbing his attention.
Maya: Ah, excuse me? Waiter: Yes, m'am? Maya: Where can I find the restroom? Waiter: Right here, m'am. Maya: Ah, thank you. Waiter: You're welcome, m'am.
Maya steps towards the restroom and knocks, calling out "Sir Chief" and expecting an answer from her beau. A woman leaves the restroom instead, leaving Maya confused. Now she really doesn't know where Richard went. Stepping out to the main deck, she tries to look for them.
Teresita and Richard are at the entrance of the boat on the pier. Teresita, as always, is anxious.
Teresita: Okay, go back to [Maya] now, okay?
Richard gives her a nervous smile before stepping away back into the boat. Teresita's eyes begin to water as she speaks.
Teresita: Maya, this is what you've been waiting for!
Roberto, Conchita, and Esmeralda are in front of some representatives of Sun Cruise, the liner that Maya and Richard are on.
Roberto: If we did any damage, we're willing to pay. Rep: It's okay sir, no harm done. Though m'am may have scared the crew, it's alright now. Conchita: Esme, why isn't Teresita back yet? Isn't the ship about to leave? Esmeralda: Oh, there she is! Chief, thank you very much and I'm sorry, sorry about that. Conchita: What? Did you give it? Esmeralda: [Teresita**], mission accomplished? Teresita: Mission accomplished, [Esmeralda]! Esmeralda: Okay, okay, let's go home.
Richard comes back into the boat but doesn't see Maya sitting where she once was. A waiter, the one that spoke to Maya, approaches him.
Waiter: Sir? Richard: Excuse me, did you see the lovely lady sitting here? Waiter: Oh, sir, are you the one she's looking for? She went to the bathroom, trying to look for you. Richard: What? Waiter: Excuse me, sir.
Richard does a little moment in the bathroom to make sure he's all good looking and that everything is alright—most particularly, the ring that has caused most of the stress in the earlier part of the episode. Maya goes up some stairs and finds a candlelit area; in curiosity, she walks up. Richard steps out of the bathroom and looks up to where Maya is going—also where Richard wants her to go.
Waiter #2: Good evening, Mr. Lim. Richard: Is everything ready?
Maya continues her walk, which ends with a band that is playing and Richard hears that as his cue to go up. The lights come up and Maya is surprised, but she walks in anyway. Maya stands for a bit, admiring everything and Richard comes a little after, admiring her for a moment.
Richard: Maya? Maya: Sir Chief, this dinner meeting is so extravagant! Look at all this effort! Where's everyone else? Richard: There is no dinner meeting, Maya. I know you know, you just don't know when. Well...tonight is the night.
And just like that, he drops down on one knee and reveals the ring.
Richard: Will you marry me?
Maya stares for what feels like twenty years.
Richard: Maya? Maya? Maya: Yes, Sir Chief, yes! Richard: Yes, thank you! You take so long to think. [But], it was worth the wait.
Cue the Be Careful with My Heart cover from these two as they hold each other close.
Different scene, this time with Cho and Kute staring up into the stars from their home.
Cho: Mom, when [aunt Maya***] says yes, are they going to go home to us here? Is Abby, Ate Nikki, and Kuya Luke coming with them? Do you think they are going to come with all of the grandparents too? Kute: Maybe not, Cho. Maybe Grandma will come first. Cho: Hopefully, [aunt Maya***] says yes so then Abby is my cousin.
Kute gets a text from Teresita saying: We were able to catch them for the ring, child.
Kute: Ah yes! Cho: Ow, mom! You hit me. Kute: My son, my son, grandma was able to give the ring to Sir Richard! Cho: Wow! That means Tito Richard's proposal will go through? Kute: Yeah, that's what's going to happen. Knowing your [aunt***], she's going to die from nervousness. She's definitely nervous. Cho: Maybe she'll cry! Kute: Oh, definitely. Oh man, when she cries, you definitely know it's going to be signal number 3.
The scene goes back to the dinner cruise. They let go of each other.
Maya: Sir Chief? Can we get a picture? Richard: Sure. Waiter? Waiter: Yes, sir? Richard: Can you get a picture of me and my fiancé? Waiter: Smile! Maya: Okay, thank you! Waiter: You're welcome, ma'am, sir. Richard: It's beautiful.
The scene goes back to the Lim household, where the family is all together sitting down. You know how it goes, debriefing the whole family of their ordeal.
Esmeralda: Well, that's basically what happened. I was very harsh to all of them. Nikki: As in, you really got mad, grandma? Esmeralda: You see, it worked! Conchita: You know, all the crew were getting so pale because of how terrified they were! When me and Roberto showed up, my goodness, they really believed in Esme's acting. Abby: It's good that you're a fast runner, grandma Teresita. Teresita: My goodness, if you all knew how much my joints hurt. It's the first time in my life I've ever done that kind of running. Luke: Really, Dad, of all the things to forget. Nikki: Dad must have been really nervous as to forget something as the ring.
Back to the dinner.
Richard: You know, I'd never forgive myself if this boat left and I still didn't have the ring. Maya: Why is it of all things, you forgot the ring? Richard: I don't know. I thought it was in my pocket, but I guess because because mom was fussing over my clothes before I left. Maya: Mm, you're blaming your mom? Richard: No, of course not, she saved the day. Anyway, don't get too stuffed because we have a late dinner at home. My mom prepared a get together to celebrate. Your mom and grandma are there. Maya: Really? Hmm, what would have happened if I said no? What would we celebrate? Richard: I knew you'd say yes. Maya: You're so annoying!
She starts looking at the ring.
Richard: Do you like it? We were finalizing the design when you saw me with her at the coffee shop. What made you think I'd do that? Maya: I don't know. I don't know what I was thinking. I'm sorry. Richard: It's okay, you're jealous, I like that. Maya: That won't happen again.
The two giggle a little and the scene changes back to the house.
Conchita: Esme, there's nothing else that can be said about the churches that are back at our place. Esmeralda: Really? Take me there when we go there. Conchita: Oh yes, really. Yeah, I'll take you all around the most beautiful churches in San Nicolas. Teresita: I'm okay, Manang**** Fe. Manang Fe: Don't worry, your child is in good hands. Teresita: I know.
Back to the boat, the newly engaged couple staring out into the darkness.
Maya: Sir Chief? Richard: Hm? Maya: This really is real, is it? Yet, why does it still feel like a dream? Richard: Does that feel real enough for you?
The next scene, Richard is on the phone and Maya speaks to the darkness, particularly to her father, wherever he is. It parallels with Teresita looking to the sky.
Maya: Dad, I'm going to get married... Teresita: Arturo, your child is going to get married. Manang Fe: Teresita? They're here.
Everyone: Congratulations! Abby: Ate Maya! Nikki: Oh my G! Congrats! Luke: How was dad's proposal? Maya: It was okay! Richard: Oh, what, all Ate Maya? Abby: Daddy! Luke: Dad, really? Maya: Tita... Esmeralda: What Tita? Call me Mama. Maya: Tito... Roberto: I wish you all the best. Maya: Thank you! Sabel and Doris: Maya! Sir Richard! Congrats! Maya: Thank you Doris, Sabel. Doris: Maya!!! Sabel: Hey, what Maya? That's Ma'am Maya! Maya: Hey, what's wrong with you two? No more of that, please! You two, really... Doris: It's because Sabel doesn't listen. Sabel: You are so pretty! Conchita: Of course she's pretty! Teresita: Ah, Manang Fe, it looks like we can't squeeze in just yet. Maya: Wait, where's my mom?
Manang Fe: Teresita, you should go out there. Teresita: Ah, no, I'll just stay here and help you instead. Richard: Mom? Teresita: My baby... Maya: Mom... Doris: Ay, Sabel, don't go talking to me like that, you're the one who started it anyway! Sabel: What, me? You, you, you, you're the one that keeps bullying me! Doris: How can I not bully you? You're such a drama queen! Sabel: Now look at this, now it's me. Manang Fe: Are you two going to stop this? Doris: Oh my goodness, Manang Fe, we're done! Sabel: We're good now! Doris: BFF! Sabel: We're BFFs now! Doris: Yeah! Manang Fe: Go in, go in!
The scene changes to dinner.
Esmeralda: Well, you know what, Conchita and I were thinking green is the motif of your wedding. Conchita: Oh yes, a brilliant green that's nice on the eyes. Esmeralda: Yes! Right? The theme will be vintage! Oh, how do you like that? Conchita: Oh, that kind of sounds formal. What if we change it? Let's make it a fiesta! Esmeralda: Fiesta? Fiesta... I don't think I've seen that kind of wedding, I don't think that's very appropriate for this kind of thing. A fiesta wedding? Conchita: That's why it's unique! Esmeralda: Oh, I see. I see, that can work. Roberto: Ladies, you're getting too excited. Shouldn't we ask Ricky and Maya what they want? Richard: Yes, Mom and mother-in-law, we were thinking we could talk about this during our Pamamanhikan^. Is that okay, Mom Teresita, if we do our Pamamanhikanin San Nicolas. Conchita: Oh, naturally Richard. Esmeralda: Me and Conchita talked about it already. We're going to go next weekend. Roberto: If you let your mother have control, you two would be getting married tomorrow!
Abby raises her hand.
Richard & Maya: Yes, baby? Abby: Can I be a flower girl? Maya: Of course, baby. Luke: At least one detail is for certain! Esmeralda: Genuinely, I already picked a church for you two, but Conchita said that there are some pretty churches in San Nicolas. Richard: Actually Mom, I saw a church already. Mom, I think the kids need to sleep already. Luke: We're not that tired. Richard: You two still have classes tomorrow and the flower girl needs to sleep. Maya: Baby, let's go? Abby: but we're still talking? Maya: Next time. Abby: Are you going to tuck me in? Maya: Of course! Richard: Baby, Maya's had a long day... Maya: Sir Chief... Richard: Maya, mom and mother-in-law need to sleep. Maya: Next time, okay, baby? Abby: Ate Maya, my dream came true! You're going to be my mom! Maya: Oh, baby... Nikki: Ate Maya, you don't know how happy I am today. Luke: You know, Ate Maya, when she woke up. she was already so excited. For me, I'm happy that you're going to be my dad's wife. Esmeralda: Maya, take care. All of you, take care. We'll call about the Pamamanhikan. Maya: Thank you, Tita...mmm, Mama... Thank you also, Tito...ah... Roberto: Welcome to the family, Maya. Richard: Dad, she's cried enough tears for one day.
The scene changes for Conchita and Teresita, coming up to Maya's apartment.
Conchita: Teresita, we need to bring out all of our covers out so we aren't embarrassing. Also, all the tins for leche flan, we have to bring everything out so they taste our specialty. Teresita: Alright, mom. Thank you, Richard. Conchita: Thank you, Richard. Richard: Oh, it's nothing. Teresita: Okay, bye! Maya... Conchita: Maya, aren't you coming up? Teresita: Ah, okay, Mom, she'll just be here for a bit. Maya: I'll follow! Teresita: Okay! Richard: Aren't you tired? we still have to bring mom home. Maya: Mom? Richard: Do you think she'll mind if I call her that? Maya: Can I just stay here? Richard: I'd love that but they'd be looking for you. Maya: I'm so happy. What about you? Richard: Of course. I can't wait to spend my whole life with you.
-----------
Episode Notes:
*In this scene, they are saying anak, which translates to my child but I think Maya's name is more appropriate than saying 'go to my child'. There are other instances in this show where anak is used and most of the time they aren't the most applicable.
**They are saying balae in this scene which literally translates to parent of a child-in-law, a word that wouldn't really work in conversation so I put their name instead.
***In this scene, Kute is saying ninang, which is the word for godparent in Tagalog. Aunt would be the closest approximation when it comes to general conversation, as I think it rolls off the tongue more than godmother.
****Manang is an endearment term that I don't really have a good equivalent for. I feel like Manang Fe's name is just best this way rather than me adjusting for anything different.
^ A Pamamanhikan is a tradition usually done when a man and woman want to get married in the Philippines. This essentially revolves around the man asking for the woman's parent(s)' permission for their daughter's hand in marriage. This is also when most logistical aspects of the wedding are discussed too! It can happen anywhere whether it be a family home or even somewhere neutral like a hotel, but in the case of Maya and Richard, it's at Maya's home in San Nicolas.
