Eastern eyed click beetle; Alaus oculatus

This bro was massive; the length of my thumb at least. Had no idea there were click beetles that could get that big.

Click beetles have an interesting ability; they have an organ on their underside that can be loaded to build up the energy needed to launch them into the air to right themselves if they end up their backs (and it frightens predators, too!). They get their name from the distinctive "click" noise the organ makes when it unlatches.

Something about this vast field outside a hotel gave me an eerie feeling. Maybe's it's because the main business area of the town was just across the highway.

On one side, bustling stores and restaurants (well, as bustling as any small town can be, I suppose).

Some kind of metal stand, I guess. No idea why it's out here or why it's hanging from a tree branch. Must have been a wild party

Some fool left this perfectly good whiskey shot out in the forest. It didn't get me too buzzed, but it tasted pretty good

Okay, the last alcohol thing was a joke, but this really is an empty bottle of booze. The three seconds of research I conducted tells me this is a brand of wine

Note: All things we could conceivably carry with us were not left in the woods. The metal stand in the first picture was the only thing we could have carried that was left there; what that image fails to capture is how high up on the tree it was
