some non-canon, revised character sidequests for dragon age inquisition:
in which sera’s red jenny work leads her to a dalish clan that she has to defend from shitty human nobles, and she’s forced to confront that the very people she’s always considered too “elfy” are precisely the kind of “little people” she’s sworn to protect
in which dorian is contacted by one of his old friends from tevinter – someone he swears is one of the good people from tevinter and not at all corrupted by the bad parts of his home country – to help with an escort mission – except it turns out that the people being escorted are slaves, and his friend did not intend for these slaves to be escorted to freedom
in which cullen, in an attempt to make it up to the mages of kirkwall that suffered while he was knight captain there, delivers supplies to a small group of former kirkwall circle mages, only to run into some of his former templar colleagues with every intention of striking these mages down – cue a scenario similar to iron bull’s character sidequest, where cullen is forced to choose between his former templar colleagues and the mages he’s trying to help
in which petrice-like chantry officials attempt to seize control of kirkwall in the absence of a viscount and a functioning templar order, and varric is summoned back there by aveline to quell rising tensions – forcing varric to choose between letting the inquisition formally intervene, thus allowing a different chantry sect to rise to power in kirkwall but still giving power to the chantry nonetheless, and empowering the people of kirkwall to take control of their own city, thus secularizing the city for the first time
in which solas discovers that an ancient artifact he’d like to study is located in an alienage – and he turns his nose up at this, at first, because he believes that these people have deliberately turned their backs on who they are in order to assimilate with humans – but instead, he’s met with the reality that these people did not choose this life, and that they’ve managed to somehow carve out their own identity despite being beaten down and subjugated for generations through no fault of their own – that it’s not necessarily a bad thing, that modern elves are different from how the ancient elves used to be
in which a group of mages seeks refuge in skyhold, led by a former apprentice that vivienne used to mentor – an apprentice who was transferred to a different circle years ago, where they were horribly abused by a templar and are still dealing with the resulting trauma in the present day – thus forcing vivienne to consider that her positive experience with the circle is not universal

Just remember. There is no such thing as a fake geek girl. There are only fake geek boys. Science fiction was invented by a woman.

Today I realized that Bioware deliberately structures their DA games so that there’s always a “sub protagonist” that the same story would frame around if the main character didn’t exist. Probably to keep things consistent in light of all the different player character options we’re given.
Dragon Age Origins: Alistair as the last Grey Warden in Ferelden and a figure at the centre Ferelden’s current political shitstorm. The DA:O ending arguably has a lot more impact if Alistair is the main character, because he genuinely dislikes Morrigan and would not want to abandon his child the way Maric did… but he might think it important to the security of the nation that he survive. Die a Grey Warden like he wanted to be, or stick around as a king because he has a duty to prevent civil war and keep the crown out of (what he sees as) unsuitable hands? How much is he truly Maric’s son?
Dragon Age 2: Varric as gatherer of strays and fixer of the ill-fated Deep Roads expedition. The DA2 ending arguably has a lot more impact if Varric is the main character, because he loves Kirkwall more than anyone alive, and he has to frame the Mages vs Templars decision as the safety of his friends vs the safety of his city. He failed Anders by letting him descend into madness and he failed Kirkwall turning a blind eye to the havoc that a mentally unstable mage could wreak. What does Varric choose?
Dragon Age Inquisition: Cassandra as natural leader and organizer of the Inquisition (who could easily have been present at the Conclave to receive the Mark). The DA:I ending arguably has a lot more impact if Cassandra is the main character. Here is a deeply faithful woman who is also a very intelligent woman and who has been given a thousand reasons to question her faith’s precepts and institutions. What direction does she want for the Chantry now its fate is in her hands? Does encountering Corypheus and Fen’Harel allow her to come to a new understanding of her religion or does it break her faith completely?
Not gonna lie, I love my OCs, but I would also like to have played those games.

That thing about how cats think humans are big kittens is a myth, y’know.
It’s basically born of false assumptions; folks were trying to explain how a naturally solitary animal could form such complex social bonds with humans, and the explanation they settled on is “it’s a displaced parent/child bond”.
The trouble is, cats aren’t naturally solitary. We just assumed they were based on observations of European wildcats - but housecats aren’t descended from European wildcats. They’re descended from African wildcats, which are known to hunt in bonded pairs and family groupings, and that social tendency is even stronger in their domesticated relatives. The natural social unit of the housecat is a colony: a loose affiliation of cats centred around a shared territory held by alliance of dominant females, who raise all of the colony’s kittens communally.
It’s often remarked that dogs understand that humans are different, while cats just think humans are big, clumsy cats, and that’s totally true - but they regard us as adult colonymates, not as kittens, and all of their social behaviour toward us makes a lot more sense through that lens.
They like to cuddle because communal grooming is how cats bond with colonymates - it establishes a shared scent-identity for the colony and helps clean spots that they can’t easily reach on their own.
They bring us dead animals because cats transport surplus kills back to the colony’s shared territory for consumption by pregnant, nursing, or sick colonymates who can’t easily hunt on their own. Indeed, that’s why they kill so much more than they individually need - it’s not for fun, but to generate enough surplus kills to sustain the colony’s non-hunting members.
They’re okay with us messing with their kittens because communal parenting is the norm in a colony setting, and us being colonymates in their minds automatically makes us co-parents.
It’s even why many cats are so much more tolerant toward very small children, as long as those children are related to one of their regular humans: they can tell the difference between human adults and human “kittens”, and your kittens are their kittens.
Basically, you’re going to have a much easier time getting a handle on why your cat does why your cat does if you remember that the natural mode of social organisation for cats is not as isolated solitary hunters, but as a big communal catpile - and for that purpose, you count as a cat.
