Thinking about how both Daan and Levi have both to save the people important to them. Levi could not save his mother through his own power or through the power of the gods, Daan could not save Elise through his own power or the power of the gods.

How Levi despite being trained and raised to kill still internalizes his own powerlessness through his continued inability to save others and adopts a scorched-earth mentality where he believes people suffering are best put out of their misery. Because he views death as the ultimate comfort, perhaps he needs to see it in such a way to cope with what he's had to do to survive, death to a soldier is mercy if it means they will have to fight no more. He applies this to himself just the same so in the face of it's inevitability he welcomes it.

How Daan is in desperate denial of his powerlessness, he'll mutliate and degrade himself in futile attempts to prove it's not true. He expresses that everyone is worth saving and no-one is better off dead because he's a healer it's the only thing he's ever known it's the only thing he has left to keeping him from being nothing. All the while never applying those views to himself and being completely willing to throw his own life away, not in a traditional death but through ego death. His fight and denial against true permanent bodily death is what ultimately kills Daan as we know him.

Early 2000s/late 1990s anime that is now on the verge of ‘forgotten’ status

I’m talking about those nostalgic analogue animations, or when the anime industries were facing a strange identity crisis of digital or analogue. I don’t know about you, but looking back, that period of anime certainly was the most mature I’ve ever seen, even compared to most shows ever released in the past decade or so.

What about your otp? What made you ship them in the first place?

Daanlevi my beloved <3 I actually answered an ask about why I ship them a while ago but what got me to start shipping them in the first place was honestly pretty situational.

I didn't have the game at the time and would watch NoCommentary's videos on it, their video showing off the way to recruit Levi Day 2 had Daan as the playable character which got me thinking about them together. Next I found out about the curing Levi's withdrawal using magna-medicinal bug/feature, wrote a fic about it and have been thinking about them ever since. Levi's "please for the love of god someone tell me what I'm supposed to do this is the first time in my life I can make choices for myself and I can't handle being thrown into the deep end" he needs a support system so fucking bad and Daan outwardly presents himself as the perfect man to offer him that even though internally he is absolutely not. He can barely take care of himself and being in charge of someone young and vulnerable would make his pocketcat endorsed POCD go crazy but he needs to keep up his roles and appearences its all his has so he cannot just leave him to fend for himself.

They stalemate each others syndromes, being together alleviates the active threats they are to themselves otherwise but also aggravates their long standing issues. They stunt each others growth as a person yet they're also the reason why they'd even be around long enough to have a chance to grow past their issues. That's what I see in them and that dynamic gives me so much to chew on and is just so personally intersting to me.
