Citrine - The Mechanic

[Recently I remembered a Steven Universe spin-off concept that I and a friend worked on in my middle school years(2016-2017) and I decided it would be fun for me to redesign the characters!

Citrine is the mechanic for the Stardust and member of the Stardust Rebellion. Citrine is mild mannered and hard working, and the wife of Orthoclase.

The original design for Citrine, much like Orthoclase, left much to be desired. In particular, she was just another a yellow twink. To solve this issue I made her a woman! Who doesn’t love gay women? Her and Orthoclase were both in a relationship in the original material, in this design I tried to give both her and their relationship more dynamic appeal.

Orthoclase - The Pilot

[Recently I remembered a Steven Universe spin-off concept that I and a friend worked on in my middle school years(2016-2017) and I decided it would be fun for me to redesign the characters!

Orthoclase is the main Pilot of the Stardust and member of the Stardust Rebellion. Orthoclase is a no nonsense gem with a soft spot for her wife, Citrine.

The original design for Orthoclase left much to be desired. In particular, she was just a yellow twink. That seemed to be an issue with a lot of the original Stardust members, they were just multicolored twinks. To solve this issue I wanted Orthoclase to be a butch lesbian inspired by none other than Swansea (Mouthwashing).

Moonstone - The ‘Cook’

[Recently I remembered a Steven Universe spin-off concept that I and a friend worked on in my middle school years(2016-2017) and I decided it would be fun for me to redesign the characters!

Moonstone was the Cook of the Stardust Rebellion, a band of rebel gems on the ship Stardust. He is a gentle giant and speaks rather slowly.

If you read his position and gave pause, you’re not alone. I did too! Why? Because gems don’t need to eat! That is a part of the Steven Universe lore that was established pretty early on that 12 year old me decided to ignore. I decided to keep it, after all it’s an au of sorts and nobody is grading on accuracy.

For Moonstone’s design I didn’t actually have to work incredibly hard. The end result is fairly similar to the original one (just with added complexities). The shorts are exactly the same and the vest is pretty damn close. I decided to go for more of a surfer vibe, whether I achieved it or not is debatable. His original weapon was a bow (it’s very much giving Opal), but if I ever get around to drawing it I will probably have it be a shield.

Chrysocolla - Second in Command

[Recently I remembered a Steven Universe spin-off concept that I and a friend worked on in my middle school years(2016-2017) and I decided it would be fun for me to redesign the characters!

Chrys is the Second in Command of the Stardust Rebellion, a band of rebel gems. Chrys is moody and quiet, as well as being a founding member of the group and friend of Smithsonite (pre-Ammolite fusion) during their time under the Diamond Regime.

The original design for Chrys was definitely a product of my young emo mind, being moody and having a faux hawk that covers her eye. Her original weapon was a battle axe, which is cool (in concept, my drawing skills were definitely not up to par with my ideas) and I may definitely get around to drawing it! I didn’t have a whole lot of inspiration for her, but I knew I definitely wanted to include liberty spikes and the zentangle design of her pants.

Ammolite - The Captain

[Recently I remembered a Steven Universe spin-off concept that I and a friend worked on in my middle school years(2016-2017) and I decided it would be fun for me to redesign the characters!

Ammolite is the Captain of the Stardust Rebellion, a band of rebel gems aboard their ship, the Stardust. Ammolite is kind and eccentric, being a fusion between the gems Smithsonite and Andesine.

To me, it was clear the original design took heavy inspiration from Undyne from Undertale. There was a ponytail, and a spear, and honestly we were huge Undertale fans, so that was not out of the realm of possibility. For the redesign, I focused instead on emphasizing the star motif and used Kunzite from Sailor Moon as major influence.
