I already answered 1, so I'll skip that and go to the next one! 40. Do you tend to reread fics or are you a one-and-done kind of person?

I DO have fics I do go back and read!!! Usually, it's stories that wind up having a lot of depth to them because I really enjoy seeing what I missed the first time around, or just genuinely enjoyed, in general, how characters were written, or specific scenes that captivated me and still have a hold on me YEARS AND YEARS later. Pretty much anything in my bookmarks are fics I have reread multiple times, or are there so I can re-read later!

1. What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?)

It would likely be my Heart(beat) Pirates Week 2024 collection! I tend to be more of a character driven writer than a plot one (as much as I wish I was,) so I feel like this would be a good neutral introduction!

5. What do you wish someone would ask you about [insert fic]? Answer it now!

Tbh, I don't know that I have a specific question about any of my fics I would love to answer, as surprising as that may be. But I will say, there's a few fics I'd love to rework and update. I love all of them dearly, but there are certainly some that I probably would have gone a different direction with. Such as the fic I did for the kidlaw zine -since I'd really like there to be more of a focus on lawzokidkil winding up together as a whole, but due to the constraints of the zine, I had to primarily focus on Kidlaw. Plus there are some story beats from the game ffxiv that I do what to expand on and see how the four would navigate them.

Footsteps fall heavy across rotted wood flooring and an aluminum can goes spiraling out of the way. To think Kid came all this way out to some abandoned fucking barn despite how much Killer had told him it was stupid. He may be full of stupid ideas sometimes but he wasn’t stupid. Killer knew that and that’s really all that mattered at this point.

But leave it up to him to still fall into old habits anyways.

Like answering a text from an ex.

The muted sound of tires rolling up the gravel road adjacent to the barn is what startles Kid from nearly falling into a slumber. There’s six more beer cans added to the pile that was left from other miscreants that sought out a good cover for underage drinking on the weekend. A fond thought for a different time in his life and maybe a hint of nostalgia. Still he kicks one of the cans out of the way as he ambles up and towards the dilapidated and half broken door. Why he shut it anyways, he’ll never know, but he’d attribute it to an old habit of his during shootouts with gang members. Not much good it would do him now if that was really the case, but better some cover than none.

With practiced movement, Kid’s hand finds the revolver that sits stashed in his waistband. He thumbs back the hammer to the chamber as footsteps draw near and he peeks his head around the corner. The likelihood of it being anyone other than the asshole who made him wait was slim to none, but he lived keeping his head on a swivel. He stills his breath, listening to the telltale cant of the approaching footsteps. He disengages the hammer and shoves the revolver back into it’s place.

“Took ya fuckin’ long enough.”

The rustle of weeds and gravel skids and slide before the sound of a switchblade flipping out is all Kid hears. He rumbles a laugh, stepping into the moonlight.

“Fucking hell, Eustass.”

“I ain’t dead yet so I dunno what yer callin’ my home for.”

Eustass expects a steel tongue from Law but what he gets is a a fist jammed into his chest that shoves him back into the barn. “Th’fuck’s got yer boxers in twi-!”

It’s impressive, but Law’s knife filled hand slaps over Kid’s mouth and Law pushes Kid further back until he’s slammed up against a wall. His fists ball up, tension pulled back and he’s about to renovate this barn with a new hole in the wall if not for the way he catches Law looking up at him. It’s a damn good thing he’d had time to adjust to the dark or he’d miss the way Law’s medical school designer eyebags we’re more prominent and his pupils engulfed by a panic he’s never seen. Still doesn’t stop him from grabbing that offending hoodie sleeve and yanking Law off him. It pisses him off it takes more effort than it should, even if the rattle of cans somewhat appeases him.

“Has anyone followed you?”

“That’s the greetin’ I get? Why not try a fuckin’ hello for wastin’ my goddamn time.”

Law comes at Kid again and this time holds the sharpened switchblade up to his throat. “I’m not asking you again: has anyone followed you?”

Normally in this situation, Kid was liable to leave a new orafice in someone’s face. He never took too kindly to threats and frankly dared people to try. Most people were fueled by adrenaline and that made them sloppy. With Law on the other hand, he’d seen Law fight his way out of death with his bare hands and so the likelihood of being taken down with this flagpole was a decent possibility, especially with a knife against his jugular.

Kid’s shoulders set a tight line and shrugs, voice unwavering like steel, “what’s it to ya? Yer lucky I still waited around for yer sorry ass.”

It’s a long minute that they hold each other’s gaze in a stalemate. There are words behind the expression and none of them that Kid can parse. Law had always been a wordy sonnuva bitch and so who’d’ve ever guessed it extended into his features. But there are words written plainly that Law hasn’t ever vocalized or made known in the time Kid’s known him.

He’s about to shove Law in a way he’ll regret doing again but he hears a frustrated growl and the blade being retracted back.

Kid rolls his shoulders, “Thought ya never wanted t’see me again, so what th’ fuck are ya askin’ me ta meet ya in the middle of bumfuck nowhere for?”

Law jams the switchblade into his pocket and keeps his back faced to Kid. Whatever it was, it was a vulnerability he didn’t want Kid to see. “…You remember Doffy?”

At those words, Kid’s eyes narrow, blood running cold. He may be an asshole most of the time, and they may not get along anymore like they used to, but fuck if he still didn’t have a kind of love still left for Law. “What about ‘im?”

“I don’t know how he knows where the hell I wound up after he was supposed to be locked up for my dad’s death,” Law’s fists clench and takes a sharp breath, “but he’s back.”
