fun fact: "large language models are not conscious intelligences they're just predictive typing algorithms, they don't have minds, and they cannot be the victims of racism because they cannot be the victims of anything because they're literally just fancy text generators please for the love of god stop personifying them you're playing right into the hands of these big tech companies that want to act like they're the new Promethei so they can sell that vision to their shareholders" and "wow you were really quick to jump on the idea that you could make up slurs for robots, and the speed and degree of glee with which you did so makes me feel like the judgement of your peers was literally the only thing holding you back from dropping actual slurs all the time, that all you needed was an acceptable target, and that is honestly pretty worrying to me." can both be true at the same time. these are not antithetical concepts.

i don't think bodily autonomy for minors should be a luck of the draw type thing where you have to cross your fingers that your parents are chill about it.

“The things you criticize AI for is stuff most of your tech does” is not whataboutism for a simple reason: AI literally is built into the same industry as the rest of the tech you use, bc it’s the tech industry. Thus, trying to reject AI alone for what is essentially a product of a hyper capitalist tech industry is functionally useless.
For example, it’s very reasonable to be concerned about the new Twitter data center that’s poisoning Memphis right now, and single out the LLM, grok, as a source of it. However, generating an image using locally run stable diffusion does literally nothing to contribute to this. Conversely, using Twitter without using grok absolutely contributes to the polluting Memphis. If we try to simply boycott AI entirely and nothing else, we still contribute to that data center. However, if we single out Twitter/X as a company, then we can actually have an effective boycott.
If your problem is the environmental cost of all data centers, and you single out AI as the source, but still continue to stream video (ie Netflix, YouTube, TikTok etc), use social media, etc, you are still contributing to the stuff that’s at least 90% of current datacenter output. I know this is news to people but data centers didn’t just. Suddenly become a problem post-AI.
People pointing this out are not being contrarian for no reason. Current anti-AI thinking has done literally zero for actually combatting the issues we need to care about, because a lot of these problems go beyond AI. This is the tech equivalent of banning straws.
The point of this isn’t to go “oh and yet you participate in society…interesting”. The point of this is to show how you need to be thinking systemically about these issues beyond the superficial shit you hear in op-eds and tweets, which by the way, frequently misreport the actual data/info regarding the situation.
You want actually effective movements that combat the tech industry? Check out notechforapartheid and BDS’s tech boycott list.

I feel like Lovecraft's "Cool Air" gets a bad rap as the iconic example of the author's weird anxieties informing his work, both because "my upstairs neighbour has a bizarre obsession with air conditioning and forcibly recruits me to help him install a series of increasingly powerful AC systems, to the point that portions of his apartment are literally freezing over, and in the end it turns out that he was undead and using AC to prevent his body from decaying" is a fairly solid premise for a Twilight Zone episode, and also because there are Lovecraft stories where the inciting anxiety is objectively much dumber.

you like umamusume? you know horse racing is like, highly unethical, right? fraternizing with the vile horse instead of slaying it where it stands is really fucked. if it was an ethical industry theyd just be buying horses in bulk to feed them into lumber saws

xkcd fans are the only fandom I've had direct experience with where people do the stereotypical nerdy fan thing of referring to installments of the thing they like by their release order numbers instead of their titles

In archeology there are artifacts, which are items made or modified by humans, but there are also manuports, which haven't been modified but are found far from any possible origin point and there's no explanation besides somebody carried it there. Manuports include things like stones, fossils, and seashells, and have been found in deposits as much as three million years old.
So yeah, apparently the oldest human activity for which we have evidence is Picking Up Cool Rocks.

okay it’s come to my attention that absolutely NONE OF YOU know ANYTHING about how cutie marks work. let me say this simply. a cutie mark isn’t a job being assigned, it’s a special TALENT OR SKILL that the pony enjoys. Most of the time it has a directly transferable job for that skill, like if you enjoy baking and are super good at it WOW! baker. If you are really good at writing and telling stories, author. However, there are some cutie marks that could go multiple ways.
twilight sparkle has exceptional magic ability, so she became a scholar, but she could really do anything that required a good magic skill. same with rainbow dash, her weather controlling job isn’t directly linked to her cutie mark, but it does fit the bill for the job.
i was posed the question of what would a murderer pony’s cutie mark be and wouldn’t everyone know. NO. if somehow murder were to be a special skill, the cutie mark might be something like a knife or a shovel. other ponies might just assume you’re good at cooking or gardening. now with cutie marks like apple jacks, their family has a ‘green thumb’ kind of deal so obviously the cutie mark would be hereditary.
so, the reason i made this post. walter white pony’s cutie mark would NOT be blue crystals. it would be a CHEMISTRY FLASK.
