I've seen a lot of complaints on my dash in regards to the characters not brought back in DAV.
Here's the thing friends, most of those characters would be difficult to bring back because their status is indeterminate. Bringing back characters who have personalities and desires shaped by past player choice is always difficult (Hawke comes to mind) but it's even more difficult when a character could be alive or dead, gone to this faction or that, accomplished a goal or not.
Is it possible to bring back Zevran or Fenris or Anders or Shale or Iron Bull or any of the other numerous characters who had different turnouts depending on your choices? Sure, but consider how much of a pain in the butt scenes like those are.
There was an attempt with the nightmare demon where you have Stroud/Alistair/Loghain and Hawke, and that quest and the appearances were very heavily criticized.
Now imagine areas in which you wanted your favorite PC to show up. Would they have improved the plot of the game? Been a cool side quest? And with each place they participate, consider that there needs to be an alternate to take their place for the players who have killed that character off in their runs. In this story, it simply makes more sense not to include them, imo. I'd rather have a good, cohesive story than a clunky attempt at fan service (which is often what the cameos end up being)

I think there are a lot of good faith criticisms you can have about DAV, but I have seen so few. I'd like to point out that DAV got left holding a pretty hefty bag, as both DA2 and DAI did not address DAO in any significant way that allowed for meaningful integration of lore states, not did DAI successfully incorporate DA2; the Hawke appearance was a disaster that boiled the character down regardless of how your Hawke handled Kirkwall. I definitely think that DAV should have handled DAI's lore better; nothing was in the way stopping them from doing so and the inexplicable 8 year time gap still makes no sense and I've completed the game. All the choices from DAI seem moot as a result of centering the game in the North and hand waving the south with blight, which is deeply frustrating. At the same time though, I don't think any introduced plot lines from DAO or DA2 would have made a lot of sense here, given the distance in time between the games within canon. HOF content should have been dealt with sooner. DA2 stuff was already scrambled by DAI. I understand avoiding it and I really think it was a damned if they do, damned if they don't situation.

i love saying “i’m being normal about it” bc i’m actually a filthy fucking liar and i’ve never been normal about anything a single day in my life

Me, once a month:
“Huh, I wonder why my lower back hurts.”
*gets deeply emotionally affected by something that normally wouldn’t not impact me that much*
“Man, I’m really craving sweets right now.”
“Why am I so tired today?”
*has an acne breakout
“Why am I so extra sad and overwhelmed right now I’m literally sitting down doing nothing?”
“What did I eat that I feel so bloated?”
Me when my period comes that night/the next morning:

Oops I accidentally
Created a fic around my lived reality
The problem w writing fiction is that you'll be like tee-hee I'm going to write a story about a fucked up little scenario that's got nothing to do with anything in real life, just some pure messed up nonsense, and then you finish it and take a step back and go aw rats I made a metaphor again

Do you ever think that maybe Andrew doesn’t want things because everyone in his youth that “wanted” only wanted in a way that was awful.
Drake “wanted” him. “Wanted” a matched set. He was a pedophile and his want was awful and gross and Andrew lives with the ghostly hands in places he begged them not to go.
Tilda “wanted” Aaron. She chose to keep a son and she beat him. She laid hands on him, even on the one she wanted. She was an abuser and Aaron still wanted her love.
Luther “wanted” the perfect family. Except that “perfect” means straight. Perfect means sending Nicky to get “fixed”. And still Nicky wanted his parents’ approval and love.
Andrew is so afraid of what want causes people to do. I think he has seen the “everything I’ve ever let go has had claw marks on it” in the claw marks left in him and has decided that the very act of even holding on was too dangerous to be worth it.

I will never get over the parallels in aftg. Neil is a rabbit that becomes a fox. He spends his whole life running and the second he’s backed into a corner, he grows teeth. As a striker he’s constantly running and maneuvering and avoiding, but to win against the Ravens, Andrew has him be a backliner. To win, Neil can’t just run anymore, he has to defend, has to stand his ground and use teeth and claws and every ounce of himself to protect what he’s earned. And Andrew is apathetic right? He wants nothing, no one. He’s the goal keeper and sometimes he can’t even be bothered to block the shots. But when that racket comes down towards Neil’s head, Andrew is there. To protect what he *wants* he has to go towards it. He has to make the move himself. Neil chooses to defend and Andrew chooses to want and they become more

I don’t often think I’m petty and then I remember that I stopped reading the ACOTAR series when Nesta and Elaine showed back up because I don’t care if Feyre forgives them, *I* don’t forgive them. Absolutely nothing could make me root for their happiness; they let Feyre—the youngest sibling—handle so much shit on her own and I will not forget that.

One of my biggest pet peeves has to be when people say “oh this dog breed isn’t for everyone”. Like I get what they’re trying to say, but people only ever say that about a select few breeds, when the truth is that no dog breed is good for them everyone. Especially the influx of online trainers/vets/vet techs/etc. I’ve been seeing hopping on the trend of “dog breeds I wouldn’t own as a *insert dog related profession here*” because 9.9 times out of 10, it only ever has to do with their personal preferences and nothing to do with professional opinion, but that’s what people often walk away from those videos with. There is such a large German Shepherd boom in shelters right now and continuing to stigmatize them is irresponsible tbh. No, not everyone should own a GSD, nor should everyone own a mastiff or a cocker spaniel or a poodle or a lab and there are some people that shouldn’t own dogs at all, but it’s more clickbaity and view inducing to have an opinion on a contentious dog breed. Thanks for coming to my TED talk

How badly do you guys think Riko wanted to still mark Jean as 4 even without actually having Neil there? Do you think Jean holds on to that little victory, that the butcher’s son, his other half, maybe is a little below him? That Jean was *just* worthy enough to get that 3 in Neil’s absence? And even worse, that part of him that knows, deep down, he was destined to be the lowest number in the perfect court. Do you think it angers him, late at night, knowing that he desperately wanted his partner to suffer with him, even if that meant being lower than he already was? Do you think he looks at Neil Josten, ordering a hit brazenly at a restaurant, and thinks: You are everything I can’t be and I am everything you should have been.

Neil is canonically pretty and absolutely a liar, so I definitely think that Andrew thought he was hot and interesting from the beginning, but I don’t think he really saw Neil, bone-deep like-knows-like until the Kathy Ferdinand show. This paranoid, lying, run-away sees Kevin shutdown and just goes apeshit. Neil didn’t want to be on air; he could’ve used this to go completely unnoticed. How could Andrew “Make a Deal With Me” Minyard not see, recognize, that he and Neil may be different flavors but they are the same fucked-up cake. Two boys that have seen and gone through too much, but Andrew’s burning rage is under the skin and Neil’s is like a pot of water boiling over.
