let’s discuss ruby’s relationship with trauma because this girl has seen some shit !! i’m gonna start by breaking it down into what she’s seen and how it’s affected her overall. it gets markedly worse after the curse is broken, mind you. trigger warning for blood, gore, cannibalism and ptsd follows.

she’s seen several herd animals be butchered by “the wolf” in the enchanted forest. --- this doesn’t bother her as much by the time we see her in the series but when red was little this would destroy her. often beloved cows or sheep were gone in the space of a night.

the dead and dismembered guardsman after red finds “mary” in her chicken coop. --- ruby’s first real instance of seeing a dead body. her face during this scene says it all, she’s terrified and disgusted.

fucking peter. aka her love interest who she believed to be said wolf. this turned out not to be correct and she slaughtered her boyfriend while he was chained and defenceless. --- this is the catalyst for ruby believing herself to always be a dangerous murderer. it’s the only life she’s taken where she knew the person before hand so it shakes her doubly and it’s very hard to distance herself from.

the only werewolf friend she ever really had, quinn, dies in front of her and she can’t save him. --- quinn gave her hope, he was the one who led her to her mother and tired to give her a freedom that no one else had ever wanted to. this friendship is extremely short-lived as he’s killed shortly before her mother.

she indirectly kills her own mother to protect her best friend. her mother, despite dying still has time to accuse red of choosing her human side over her wolf side. --- anita threatened to kill snow, ruby’s only remaining friend for indirectly ambushing the werewolf pack. in one fell swoop, red lost both her parents and the potential for a safe home. while anita’s dead was not her fault, red considers it to also be another murder on her hands.

she found graham’s heart in a box in storybrooke which lead to the conclusion that the missing kathryn nolan was dead. --- this is the first real instance of trauma in storybrooke. ruby is very shaken by this evidence found and the nightmares about it persist for months. 

the whole peter thing happens a-fucking-gain !! a guy with a crush on ruby is murdered and she’s framed for it. to own up to her actions, she faces a an angry mob of people who once were her friends and a man who threatens to shoot her. --- this is important because up until this point, ruby had been doubly careful not to hurt anyone during the full moon. she was not dangerous by this point as she’d learned to control herself but the guilt and grief of billy’s death shocks her even after she discovers it wasn’t her who did it.

the  wifi  in  the  diner  is  down  and  ruby’s  phone  is  thusly  discarded  in  favour  of  moping .  her  customer  smile  stays  perfectly  intact  but  granny  gets  the  brunt  of  the  complaining  when  her  break  time  inches   closer .  she  huffs  when  it  arrives ,  pulling  on  her  jacket ,  turning  on  her  heel  and  leaving  through  the  back  door .  locking  the  gate  behind  her ,  she  sets  her  eyes  on  the  pawn  shop .  the  bell  above  the  door  rings  as  she  enters .

she’s  not  the  best  with  things  like  subtlety ---  a  girl  with  less  investment  in  the  people - skills  side  of  her  line  of  work  would  think  it  best  to  walk  away  from  the  man  who  looks  like  he’s  having  a  rough  time .  but  ruby  prides  herself  on  her  ability  to  bring  at  least  some  sort  of  distraction  and  strangers  are  a  rare  commodity .

1.  ruby in storybrooke is ashkenazi jewish but is largely non-practicing. 2.  her grandmother raised her with the holidays but she recalls very little hebrew. 3.  adam and eddy will pry this from my cold, dead hands and if this blog ever touches events based around the second curse, ruby will still be jewish. 4.  i am hesitant as fuck to talk about pre-storybrooke religion with ruby just because a & e fucked it up so badly. 5.  i’m doing my best here with the bullshit canon gave me lmao. meg.han or.y is jewish so ruby is too.
