▸ synopsis: yeongmi was always used to being on her own — whether that be on the school playground, or at the studio late at night when everyone else went home. but when she starts training with ateez — she starts to realize that she doesn’t have to face everything alone.

to an outsider, yeongmi’s studio was comfortably silent. there was only a few occasional whispers from the air conditioner, and there was a few clicks from her mouse as she worked on her music. the blue computer light illuminated yeongmis face just enough to see the dark eye circles she had forming. every so often, she would stretch up and crack her back, taking a sip from her iced coffee and then returning.

the room was not silent to yeongmi. in her headphones, her work was blasting in her ear, occasional vocals from her recording last night. she wasn’t satisfied with the song at all, she kept adjusting the sound levels and deleting or adding sounds. she didn’t think she was in the room for long, but when she looked down and saw her cup empty, she figured she had to be in the room for atleast two hours.

yeongmi sighed and looked at the time in the corner of her computer, raising her eyebrows when the time read 3am. hongjoong was probably getting ready to head home, and as much as yeongmi wanted to go home and lay in her bed, she knew she should finish this now while she had the energy.

so, instead of packing up her things and following hongjoong home, she slid her headphones back on and went back to work. she figured she should just sleep on the couch, since by the time she would be finished she would have to be back at the company in 2 hours. maybe she’ll text seonghwa to bring her some clothes.

two hours went by, and yeongmi was still not happy with her work, but she couldn’t stand to be awake anymore, so she grabbed her sweatshirt and slid it on, and curled up on her couch. she was only able to sleep for a few hours until hongjoong was knocking on her door, cracking it open when he heard her faint mumble.

“yeongmi, why didn’t you come home last night?” hongjoong asked, sitting a warm cup of coffee on the nightstand next to the couch, moving yeongmis legs on top of his lap so he could sit next to her.

“i wanted to work on my song, but it’s still not what i want it to be.” yeongmi said, sitting up and grabbing the cup of coffee, smiling when it was the almond color she loved. “what time is it? i think i’m going to work on it some more, i’ll meet you guys at the meeting.”

yeongmi could see out of the corner of her eye that hongjoong did not looked thrilled with her suggestion, and before yeongmi could say anything, hongjoong was dragging her off the couch and into the hallway.

“how about we get breakfast first and then we work on your song. i’ll take a listen and we can work on it together.” hongjoong said, bringing yeongmi into the lunch area and sitting her down, rummaging through the pantry until he found the oatmeal she loved.

“hongjoong, im really not hungry, i ate—” and before yeongmi was even able to finish her sentence, she smelt the sweet cinnamon warm oatmeal, she could feel her stomach rumbling and before she knew it, she was taking the bowl from hongjoong’s hand and eating it, a content sigh escaping her lips.

"yeah, likely story." hongjoong joked, smiling when yeongmi only rolled her eyes. "so - this song. what makes you so obsessed with it?" hongjoong asked, crossing his arms and leaning forward. "i mean, i'm used to you staying in the studio late at night, but spending the night at the company is a new one."

yeongmi sighed, putting her spoon down. she wasn't sure why she was so obsessed with the particular song - she had written loads of songs since coming to KQ, but like hongjoong said - she was never the dedicated. a few new boys had joined the company, and it seemed like they were all getting close to debuting. or atleast - the company was thinking about it.

she wanted to be prepared for the day that the company comes to yuri and hongjoong and ask for all the songs they made in the studio they had been granted, she wanted to prepared for when they were crafting their album, at least one of her songs were in the lineup. she wanted the album to be produced mainly by the group and tell the stories of the group - she wanted to have creative freedom - but how could she do that if she had nothing good?

realizing that she had been staring at her oatmeal for awhile, she cleared her throat and looked up, biting her lip before speaking, "I just want to have a really good debut. I want to tell our story, the group's story to the fans. I want to have our own work out there, and I can feel that they company is alot more interested in us after yeosang joined. I just...I want to prepared," Yuri said, shrugging, "And I feel like this song has alot of potential. Maybe not title track potential, but it could be a considered track."

hongjoong nodded, patting yeongmi's hand across the table, "well, if you want to tell our story - wouldn't it make sense to ask for our help? instead of overworking yourself and burning yourself out?" hongjoong asked, giving yeongmi a sharp look when she tried to protest. "i see the tired look in your eyes when we are at practice, i see you mumbling under your breath when you make a mistake. it's the same face you had on the last episodes of produce. do you want this to be like produce again?"

"no, i don't." yeongmi shook her head, shivering when she thought about the state of mind she was in during the show. she was isolated, she was overworked, tired, yet she was desperate to debut.

"then let me help you, let the group help you." hongjoong said, reaching in his pocket, pulling out a piece of paper. "i asked all the boys to write something down to you - to prove to that you aren't alone. that our friendship is real."

yeongmi's mouth fell open as hongjoong passed her the note, seeing all of the handwritings of the other trainee's. she could feel the tears pool in her eyes before she could even start reading the letter, touched that someone would put in this amount of effort to let her feel seen.

she always felt alone all of her life - she didn't have that many friends in her home town, and it was even more of a struggle when she moved to south korea with limited knowledge of the korean language. she was friends with alot of the girls from I.O.I, but she couldn't deny that the friendship had a root of toxicity in it from being compared against each other for so long. yeongmi took a deep breath and started from the beginning of the letter, her smile growing after each note.

yeongmi smiled when she read the final one, wiping the tears off of her cheeks. she could hear each of the boy's voices when she read the letter, looking up to hongjoong to see him with a wide smile on his lips, a slight blush on his cheeks.

"i think this is the sweetest thing someone has ever done for me," yeongmi said, laughing to keep herself from crying. "this really does mean alot to me, hongjoong." yeongmi said, smoothing out the paper on the table.

as she stared at the paper for longer, the weight of the words really sunk in. she was close to all of the members, but they weren't sentimental very often. she felt so lucky to be surrounded by people that were so caring, so loving, people that saw her for who she truly was, and appericiated her. she appericated all of the boy's, and no one she had ever meant had made her feel so happy before, so loved. they gave her a purpose, they gave her a sense of belonging.

"you don't have to say anything. i just wanted you to know that you aren't alone." hongjoong said, smiling when yeongmi nodded, reaching her hand across the table, grabbing onto her friend's hand, squeezing it once. her way of saying, i love you.

"let's work on this song, shall we?" hongjoong asked, smiling when yeongmi nodded. the duo went back to the studio, and to yeongmi's suprise, the remaining members were all in her studio, snacks littered on the table.

"hongjoong said you might need some help, so we all came." wooyoung said, walking over to the girl and engulfing her in a hug, his smile wide. yeongmi just looked at all of the boys in adoration, loving that they all came to help her, to support her. it meant the world to her.

"you guys...you can listen to it. you can tell me what you think. maybe we can change some lyrics....i left spaces for mingi and hongjoong to have a rap too, for you to have your own written verse." yuri said, breaking away from wooyoung's hug and going to her computer, pulling up the song. "i was starting to have a feel for everyone's parts, but it's not set in stone." yeongmi said, turning around and looking at the boys, smiling when seonghwa nodded at her in encouragement.

"i'm sure it will be amazing, like always." mingi said, and with that, yeongmi pressed play. anxiously playing with her rings as she watched the boys react to the song, smiling slightly when she saw some of them nod their heads.

when the song finished, they all burst into the applause, hongjoong patting her on the shoulder, mouthing, "good job". the nine of them spent hours in the studio, tweaking the lyrics, tweaking the music and the beat, and by the time the meeting rolled around, they had all the parts picked out, and honjoong, mingi, and yeongmi had all their verses written. they left the studio in good spirts, continually talking about the song, the lyrics, and how excited they were for debut.

"im proud of you, really." mingi said, playfully pushing his shoulder into yeongmi's. "you've grown so much with the music you create, i can see you becoming kpops best songwriter and composer," mingi said, laughing when yeongmi only sighed and rolled her eyes.

"i wish, but i have some tough competition." yeongmi said, biting her lip. "you like the song, right? you all aren't complementing me just to make me feel better?" yeongmi asked, looking over at her friend with concern.

"i would never lie about the music i like, i love the song." mingi reassured the girl, the duo silent for awhile as they walked to the meeting. eventually, mingi spoke again.

"I think it should be called "My way", what do you think?" mingi asked, smiling when yeongmi looked at him with astonishment, clearly loving the title.

"i think that would be perfect," yeongmi whispered, a wide smile on her lips. she couldn't wait for their future, for their debut, for the future music she would create, all the boys on her side. all nine of them had a great career ahead of them, she could feel it. they were finally feeling like a team, like a group, and she knew their debut was just around the corner.

everything was finally falling into place.

yuri always questioned the people who seemed to let go of how people hurt them. she always wondered how they could forgive, how they could try to repair a relationship that had seemed so broken, how they could try to let go off all of their repressed emotions. because to yuri, the pain and hurt that she had gone through, will forever haunt her. she could never find a way to put it all behind her, she could never find a way to let go. she would move on and be happy with her life, but it just took a small thing to remind her of all of the suffering her parents had put her through, and she felt like she would always, even if it was a little bit, mourn the lost childhood she would have had, and sometimes, in the back of her mind, she wonders what would be different in her life if she grew up in a different environment.

she wonders if she would have ran away, moving thousands and thousands of miles away to chase a dream to leave a place that continuously made her feel insane, hopefully to never have to return. she never thought she'd step foot in san francisco again - but the truth was that she was running into an environment that was even worse than the one she was escaping. but it ended up working out - didn't it? if she didn't go to JYPE, would she ever found KQ? then she would never met the members of ateez - she would have never found a group that had felt so much like family, the eight boys had made up for the years of hell she had to endure - and filled her life with such joy. they were patient, letting her open up to them on her own time. and still, even when she still has some of her walls up, they never push. they never judge. they understand. they listened to her when she was struggling, they held her up when she felt like she couldn't keep going anymore. and wordlessly, all nine of them knew that they would do anything for each other.

even if that meant dragging one's mother out of their dorm.

yuri hadn't spoke to her mother in years - the last time they had any sort of contact was in 2018 when her mother called her a disgrace for debuting in a group of eight men with barely any funds. yuri ignored her, though. she didn't care. even if it failed, she had enough money from her royalties and her appearance on various shows to support herself for a couple years at the time. but, even if she acted like she didn't care on the outside, she couldn't deny seeing her mother's face on her porch felt like someone was twisting a knife in her heart all over again.

she wasn't expecting it. there was no call, no text, not even her brother knew that their mother was making a surprise visit. she was simply sitting on the couch in the dorm, watching movies while seonghwa built legos at the coffee table. hongjoong was in the kitchen making something for lunch, and the rest of the boys were in their respective rooms, relaxing on their deserved day off.

just as yuri was about to join seonghwa to make legos, there was a knock at the door. then two. and then hurrid bangs aganist the door, so loud hongjoong even heard it past his headphones.

"the hell?" yuri said, standing up and staring at the door, almost scared to approach. hongjoong got there first, looking at their security system to see who was now furiously knocking at their door, cursing when he saw a women who looked a little too similar to yuri for his own comfort.

"what, who is it? some stalker?" yuri asked, walking up to hongjoong, her mouth dropping when she saw who was at the door. no one other that her god forsaken mother, with her eyebrows furrowed, fist curled as she continued to abuse the door. yuri could feel her stomach curling at the sight of the expression painted on her mothers face - the same malicious and angry face her mother had when she was younger, when she was getting shamed for things that were far out of her control.

"why is she even here? who has the audacity to show up to your daughters apartment after years of not speaking to them?" hongjoong asked, anger filling on his face. he knew about how yuri's mother made her childhood a nightmare, and he could feel his blood boil when he thought about the night's yuri spent crying in his studio about her mother negligence.

"she had to see the news." yuri said, swallowing the lump in her chest. "that I came out." yuri clarified, biting her lip when hongjoong's face fell.

"do you want to speak to her, because if not i can handle it. we can call security and get her removed." hongjoong said, placing a hand on the younger girl's shoulder, worridely looking into her eyes, looking for any sign of fear. but, he only saw the built up rage pooling up in the girl's eyes, frustration evident on her face.

"no, let's hear what she has to say, I can't wait to hear about the shame i've brought to the family." yuri said, moving infront of hongjoong, unlocking the door, and taking a deep breath before swinging open the door, almost choking on air when she the face of her mother up close for the first time in six years.

her mother had aged, wrinkles forming in between her eyebrows and on her cheeks, but she still had the same, strong features as she did so long ago. yuri hated to admit that it felt like she was looking in a mirror of herself, but the opposite end of it is her years and years older. she hated that she could still find all of the similarities her and her mother shared with each other, because she swore up and down that she would never, ever be like her when she was growing up.

but you are nothing like her, and you never will be. yuri told herself, taking a deep breath to gain her courage, pulling all the strength within herself to talk to her mother.

"what's the special occasion for you to grant me your presence?" yuri asked, fighting the urge to shut the door in her mother's face. she had to stick it out, she had to at least hear her mother talk, hear the reason for her flying across the world to see her.

"oh great, you still have a terrible mouth." yuri's mom said, pushing past the girl and entering the apartment, rolling her eyes when yuri slammed the door shut. "have you seen the news? have you seen the things that they are writing about you? what were you thinking? pubiclly coming out to the public? did you ever take a second to think about how foolishly you are acting? you are throwing your career down the drain, you are playing with dangerous waters, for what, personal satisfaction?" yuri's mom questioned, crossing her arms.

"and what are you doing here, this is a conversation between my daughter and I, it doesn't concern you." Mrs. Kim added, looking distastefully at hongjoong, scoffing when hongjoong only stepped closer to yuri.

"it actually does concern me - considering that the members and I have been more like family to yuri than you ever would be." hongjoong fired back, raising his eyebrows when Mrs. Kim didn't comment. "now, you can have a respectful conversation with yuri or I will be calling security to have you escorted out of this building."

"oh, so now you're having you're boyfriend fight your battles fo you? what happened to that strong-willed girl that abandoned her family for some silly dream she had?" Mrs. Kim taunted, laughing when yuri balled her fists at her sides.

"Don't you ever say that I am the one that abandoned the family - who was the one cleaning the broken glass off the floor after you and dad fought? Who was the one that answered the phone when you were too drunk to even get up? Who got the groceries and learned to cook dinner so I wouldn't starve? It sure as hell wasn't you - it was me, and it was Jaehyun and Taylor. We were the ones that cleaned up the mess you and dad left for us, you have no room to talk about abandoning people." Yuri spat, stepping closer to her mother, closing her eyes to attempt to push her anger to the side, trying to get herself to to calm down.

She couldn't help it, seeing her mother again brought back all of the pent up emotions she had for years, it brought back all of the bad memories she had to see again and again in her dreams. But still, she couldn't help but feel sad. She hadn't talked to her mother in years, but she still cared. She still sent over money, and a card for the holidays, even if she didn't recieve anything back. A part of her had hoped her mother was coming to apologize, to tell her how sorry she was for hurting her so much, but Yuri knew that that was far from the truth.

"You are still such an ungrateful brat - do you know how hard it was to raise you? Do you know how hard it is for me now that all of my childern don't talk to me, and now they are idols? Oh, I never hear the end of it from your Grandma. She keeps telling me that I failed in raising you - but I did what I could. And now that you've told the whole world you're a lesbian, I haven't heard the end of it. A disgrace to the family name - all three of you!" Mrs. Kim yelled, getting closer and closer to her daughter, "I gave you everything, and this is how you repay me? Did you even consider the shame that I would be in if you came out?"

"You did what you could? What you could've done was actually love you're childern - and maybe you wouldn't be so miserable and full in shame. And have you ever considered anything about me? Have you ever considered that the reason I came out is bigger than me and you? I came out so that other childern, who are also gay, know that they better than the treatment they recieve from homophobic and cruel people like yourself. I did it so that they knew they weren't alone - so they knew that they were loved. I don't care about what your hairdresser says to you, and I will never give a shit. You put me through hell." Yuri said, her voice raising as she went on, all of her bubbled rage finally coming out. She expected a screaming match, she expected her mother to curse her out, she expected her to even storm out - but she never expected her own mother to tackle her to the ground, swinging a punch to her face.

Before Yuri could even process what was happening, Hongjoong and Seonghwa were pulling Mrs.Kim off of Yuri, getting screamed at and clawed at in the process. Mingi and Yunho were immediatley at her side, cradeling her head and checking her face for bruising. She could hear Wooyoung yelling, calling securitiy to their room, she could hear Hongjoong and Seonghwa arguing with Mrs. Kim, but Yuri was too dazed to make out what they were saying.

Yuri could barely make anything out anymore, Mingi and Yunho's face's were becoming blurry, and all of the sound in the room became muffled, slowly fading out until all Yuri could see was black.

"will you two stop fucking around? one of you is going to wake her up."

yuri could hear the whisper of the voice speak, belonging to no one other than her leader. yuri still felt groggy with sleep, but she couldn't help but be curious of what happened since she passed out, so she slowly fluttered open her eyes, wincing when she was met with a bright fluroscent light above of her. when she finally got used to the light, she turned her head to look beside her, smiling goofily when she saw honjoong sitting on the edge of her bed, his hands running through her hair softly.

"joongie, did you bring me to the hospital?" yuri asked, a dreamy tone in her voice, a small grin still present on her face. she realized she felt no pain at all, and she really couldn't feel hongjoong's hands on her head. hongjoong just laughed softly, his head falling down as he shook his head, trying to stay quiet.

"yes, I brought you to the hospital. they gave you some strong drugs, do you feel funny?" hongjoong asked, smiling when yuri simply nodded. "you hit your head pretty hard, but the good news is you don't have a concussion. you do have some pretty nasty bruised, and uh- scratches." hongjoong said, lifting yuri's arm to show the girl the scratch marks on her.

"damn - didn't know my mom was secertly a pyscotic cat too." yuri joked, sighing when hongjoong didn't laugh. "what happened after she punched me? the only thing I remember is seeing Mingi's face before I passed out," yuri asked, scanning the room to find her tall best friend, giving the boy a slight wink before returning her attention to hongjoong. she couldn't help but make a few jokes - it made the situation a little less scary.

"well," hongjoong grimaced, clearly hestitaintly giving the girl a recap of the events, "seonghwa and I pulled her off of you. She wasn't happy about that, she scratched us too and called us a few nasty words," hongjoong said, rolling his eyes when seonghwa interupted him with a cough, "ok fine, a lot of nasty words. but don't feel bad, I didn't keep my mouth closed either."

"yeah, he let Mrs. Kim have it - I never saw him that angry before." Yeosang pitched in, his face still filled with edge.

"Wooyoung called security, and they dragged her out. the police came to try and take statements from us, but we were too worried about getting you here. but they are waiting on us in the hallway in case you want to...you know. press charges." hongjoong finished, sighing when yuri squeezed her eyes shut again.

"you think if I go back to sleep this will all go away?" yuri asked, opening her eyes again when no one responded. "i'm sorry you all had to witness this. not a very fun way to spend our day off." yuri said, covering her face with her hands, trying to keep her tears at bay. she knew the boys would see right through her, and she knew that once she saw all the looks on their faces, she wouldn't be able to hold back anymore.

"don't blame yourself, you did nothing to deserve anything that did she did to you. even coming out publicly, because I promise you, her life isn't ruined. and neither is yours, or your career." mingi said, moving from across the room to sit on the other side of yuri, gently pulling her hands away from her face. mingi could feel his heart sink when he saw the scrunched up face of the girl, tears pooling in her eyes. he couldn't even imagine the pain that she was going through right now, and all he wanted to do was to take it all a way. but he knew he knew he couldn't, so instead, he did what he needed to do.

"you don't need to be brave anymore, yuri. it's okay to be scared, it's okay to let it all go. you don't have to hide anything from me." mingi whispered, wrapping his arms around her waist, letting her hide her face in his chest.

and that is what yuri needed to hear, because within seconds, the room was filled with the girl's muffled sobs, tears furiosly running down her cheeks. the boys couldn't hold strong either, some of them wiping tears off of their cheeks too. minutes passed by, all of the members letting yuri cry it out, still waiting for her when she was ready to talk again.

"all i want right now, is a hug. like we used to hug in our trainee days when someone was upset." yuri said, pulling her face away from mingi. tears were still coming down her cheeks, but she was able to breath without a sob erupting. the boys immediately understood, mingi and yunho helping the girl out of bed, being the first one to wrap their arms around her. one by one, each member circled around the girl, engulfing her in a giant group hug. feeling the arms of all of her closest friends is what told yuri that she would be okay again, she knew that even through her darkest days, she would have them to fall back on.

she would have them to protect her, to defend her, to love her, to be her family, to be her joys in life, her best friends, the best musical partners, her platonic soulmates. even when life kept throwing things at her, and she questioned why she was the one that was forced to go through all of the pain, she was never angry at the fact that the world brought her to ateez. even if she had to go through it all again, she would knowing that she would be able to have eight of the greatest people on her side.

it wasn't until hours later that yuri was discharged to go home. she had talked to the police - deciding that she would like to put a temporary restraining order against her mother for the time being, and then the doctor had sent her away with a week supply of pain killers and a warm blanket.

the first thing they all did was take a shower, going back to their old ways to decide who could shower first - playing rock, paper, scissors. yuri got the first and best shower by default, giggling to herself as she walked past the arguing boys. when she got out, she helped seonghwa prepare popcorn, setting out many blankets on their large sofa, popping open may cola's and beers and setting them on the coffee table. they had all decided they deserved a movie night after the events of the day, and yuri couldn't resist something to take her mind off things.

"i"m really proud of you, by the way." seonghwa said, nudging the girl softly with his shoulder, "for telling your mom what you really felt, not letting her walk over you."

yuri hummed, nodding slightly. "you think she regrets spending all that money to come here?" yuri asked, laughing softly when seonghwa only shrugged, giving the yuri a quick hug before he went to the showers.

jongho and wooyoung had won the second battle, so it was the three of them laying on the couch together, trying to decide on the movie.

when all nine members were in the living room, they all argued where everyone got to sit, the lame movie wooyoung chose, and placing blame on who had spilt the popcorn. it was eventful to say the least, and yuri was very tempted to fake to get a headache just to get all the boys to be quiet.

things eventually settled down, and one by one, the members had fallen asleep, forgetting about the movie and the popcorn, leaving only yuri and hongjoong awake. the duo sat in silence for awhile, even though neither of them were paying much attention to the movie.
