I can’t fully express the sheer depth of my disappointment that the tiktok ban literally lasted five seconds.

The fact that tiktok chose to go dark before the actual start date for the ban enforcement only to announce that they were relying on Trump to get it back up and running was disgusting.

The fact that they only came to an agreement after letting tiktok go dark is a scare tactic. They were showing us that they hold all the power and no matter what we do we cannot stop them from taking away our rights and our freedom.

If it was really about letting tiktok exist for the people then they would have reached this agreement 24 hours ago but they wanted us to be scared and fearful and get a taste of withdrawal so that they know we can’t live without it and now that they have power over it they are going to use it for control.

I personally don’t know if I can continue using tiktok if this is what it is going to be like. If it is just going to be some government tool to control the masses.

I love tiktok and I love the community I was a part of over there and I will miss it so incredibly much but the state of things is getting so out of control.

I really do hope that people stick to this 'I'm not going to praise Trump if he brings TikTok back' thing because not only did he support it's banning in the first place, but he just wants to gain support from more people and be idolized in the media. It's the start of his second presidency, it's a distraction you shouldn't fall for.

He's still a billionaire, he is still a Zionist, he is still a fascist, transphobe, homophobe, a FELON, and plenty more.. I assure you, you do not want to support this man in any way shape or form. do not start praising him for bringing back TikTok if he succeeds.

It's so blatantly obvious too,, because this TikTok ban is all over the media. doing something that big and taking all the credit for himself is exactly the type of publicity boost that he needs to gain more support from Gen Z, and you need to remember not to not only ignore that he did it, but refuse to interact with any posts praising him for it. maga is gonna go INSANE over this and you need to stay away from their influence

this is dystopian. i cannot believe they managed to pass a law saying OUT LOUD that they’re banning a social media platform because teenagers were informing each other about the genocide in palestine. and of course because “the chinese are harvesting our data” — while this law is being lobbied by facebook and instagram stockowners who harvest our data.

the new law is that they can legally ban ANY SOCIAL PLATFORM WITH INFORMATION THEY DON’T LIKE.

I never had a tiktok but man. It's fucking AWFUL that it got banned. And now the app is blasting "President Donald Trump said he will work with us to restore usage" as if he wasn't one of the people to spearhead its ban years ago. His hatred for the app and his wish to ban it made an insane amount of headlines in 2020 and now he wants to be the hero who saves one of the most-used apps of the generation? Fuck him so incredibly very much

Just a reminder for everyone in a few months who are going to thank Trump for doing “random acts of kindness” or whatever the fuck:

Donald Trump started this nonsense.

He was the one who initially wanted TikTok to be banned. He’s the one who said that it was spyware from a foreign adversary. He wanted it gone first. This is not a new argument, this is from 2020. It has been in his plans for the entire Biden administration.

Because what Trump wants is to set up a situation where he looks like the hero. Where he swoops in and solves a problem that looks sudden and garners some good favor, despite him causing the problem in the first place years ago. He knows that the modern attention span is practically zero, focused on the shiny object, so he will do something flashy to distract everyone from the massive overhauls to basic human rights he’s doing in the background. He wants to kill us while we’re not looking, so he has set up a little magic trick to keep our eyes off the real world.

Take your eyes off TikTok. If or when it comes back, do not thank Trump. Do not get so lost in scrolling that you forget the world around you, and how it is about to go belly up. Do not forget about Project 2025, or his plans to raid schools with border control agents, or his planned cabinet. Do not let one pre-planned “good” deed distract you from the fact that this administration is about to do real harm to and outright kill a lot of people. Keep your eyes on him and his administration with extreme scrutiny, because he wants you to look away.

The scariest part about Trump is that he’s smart. We call him stupid, but he’s not. He is incredibly clever when it comes to entertainment, and will play any role if it gets him where he wants to be, and he plays them incredibly well. If we do not scrutinize his every move as some sort of act, we give him more space to do things than he ever deserves to have, and that space will be used to do incredibly cruel things, and the blame will not only be on him, but us for giving him the opportunity.

So yeah. Don’t go thanking Trump for any of this shit. He’s playing a long game and he’s playing a role that he knows you will like. Do not forget.

For anyone who didn't use TikTok and/or doesn't understand the extent of the app's influence on the American people, here are some things to consider:

Many independent artists and business owners used the app to sell their products.

Many singers and musicians promoted their music and got record deals off of the app.

There have been many cases of people who avoided homelessness b/c of the creator fund.

There have been many cases of chronically ill and disabled people getting a proper diagnosis because of the app.

The app served as a much easier way for many disabled people to communicate with the world about their experiences.

The app was key to organizing for Palestine and Ukraine, and allowed people under attack to share their stories.

The app brought many Americans together to openly criticize the healthcare system on a scale unheard of before.

The app helped people share what their communities looked like after natural disaster and organize for relief when the government failed them.

And there is so much more.

This is important for you to understand beyond the irritating discourse and immature hot takes and viral brainrot that pop up on the app (as they do with any social media.)

This is what was taken from the American people. Can you put your thinking cap on for a second and question, why would our government take away a tool that allows people to do all this?

The ban is censorship. Full stop.

Now, if the app comes back it will be because billionaires got their way.

There is already speculation that US based Meta will buy it and then they get to control it. It's billionaires once again playing with our lives, and Trump will get to look like the guy who saved TikTok.

All of this was by design.

I don’t care how many of you feel superior for not using tiktok. Hate the app all you want, but the GOVERNMENT restricting access to an app they have NO known proof of it being more dangerous than any AMERICAN APP (which have data security issues all the fucking time) is a fucking scary idea. Whether you like it or not, this is censorship, and it sets an alarming precedent for future things being censored in the name of “national data security” as well. I had issues with tiktok. But I don’t think it should be banned. This is just another step in the fucking awful direction our government is moving towards.
