Southern California Fires Masterpost

please be safe guys!! if you can:

Stay off the roads. People need to evacuate, and traffic jams are dangerous!! If we block the roads, we block people from getting to safety.

Wear a mask, use air purifiers, and keep those who have respiratory issues indoors! Air quality is sucky right now, so be careful.

IF YOU ARE IN AN EVACUATION WARNING ZONE, PREPARE TO EVACUATE. Pack a go bag, run through an emergency plan with your family and friends, and make plans in case you have to get out quickly.

Stay calm, and if you are able bodied in an evacuation zone, try to help neighbors and friends escape. Either leave your keys in your car or take it with you - cars blocking roads cause problems for evacuees and firefighters.

If you suspect you might be mandated to evacuate soon, GO NOW! Don’t wait - it’s better to be safe than scrambling at the last second, or worse, on fire.

Offer support to those who need it. If you have any friends or family in evacuation zones or warning areas, contact them and ensure they’re safe. Take in families or extend help if they need it.

I’m not sure if anyone can just walk up and volunteer at evacuation centers, but if you can, try and make it easier on those whose lives have just been completely uprooted.

Try and conserve water! Firefighters are running out of water to fight the fires…their resources are already strained, so anything we can do to help is great.

Respect those on the front lines! They’re doing so much to keep us safe and lots of people owe their lives to them.

INFORMATION ON THE FIRES

As of now, 19:44 01/08/25, the palisades fire has burned over 15,800 acres; the eaton fire is over 10,500; the hurst fire is at 850 acres; and they are all at 0% containment. 2 smaller fires have also arisen - the sunset fire (20 acres, 0%) and the olivias fire (11 acres, 0%). There are 2 more smaller fires in the process of being contained or at least forward progress stopped - the lidia fire (80 acres, 30%) and the woodley fire (30 acres, seems to be contained in the sepulveda basin)

All LA Unified schools and offices are closed tomorrow, January 9. They presumably will also be closed Friday, January 10.

At least 5 people are dead, over 1,000 structures (including homes) are destroyed. Over 26,000 acres total have been or are being burned.
