Hey. International people.
Keep calling it the Gulf of Mexico or whatever your term is for it. Do not allow the Republican regime to label that body of water the Gulf of America to the world. The name came from a the term Mexica, what the Aztecs called themselves. It’s been called the Gulf of Mexico since the 1600s.
Keep calling it Mount Denali. The original name before it was Mount McKinley. Don’t let the First Nations be erased.
It may sound stupid and petty. But it is an attempt to rewrite history and make us forget the origins. It is a literal white washing of history. This type of censorship is a beginning to greater evils.

if you're subscribed to Microsoft word, you probably received an email recently saying they're upping their prices. Like, a lot. ($9.99/month instead of $6.99)
guess what though? you can log into your account, click Cancel Subscription, and get the option to continue your subscription at the same price WITHOUT their bullshit AI.
That's right, the new, higher price is actually a different subscription that includes AI that everyone is being opted into by force! What a cool and fun product that clearly everyone wants.
you can also choose to buy Word 2024 without AI for a single lump sum that will be yours in perpetuity, with no updates, for one computer.
Check your subscription if you need Word for work! Don't get duped into paying for something you might not even want

Hi Tumblr Newbies,
The inevitable new influx of people means a roundup of folks talking about "we don't have an algorithm here," "you NEED to reblog things," etc. and I would just like to offer some actually helpful advice.
One of tumblr's best assets is that it offers you multiple algorithmic feeds, including not having one at all. If you are on mobile, you will notice a "following" tab, followed by a "for you" tab, which is algorithmically generated. "Following" only includes posts from people you follow, in reverse chronological order. That's it. The vast majority of tumblr users prefer it this way, as we predate algorithms.
If you are new and looking to expand what you're finding quickly, you can browse under the algorithmic feed and tweak it once you've followed a few blogs and liked a few things - under "settings," you can choose to have posts related to your likes, or the likes of people you follow.
However - again, most users on this website do not use the algorithm. It's for that reason that reblogging posts is of such importance here. Liking a post is an appreciated sign of goodwill, but for the majority of users, it will not boost the post. Many of use use likes just as a save folder.
So if you genuinely like something you see on here, I encourage you to reblog it, because that is the only way the post will continue to spread around. Almost everyone started their blog with a theme they were loathe to ruin with an unrelated reblog, but by now most of us are just streams of consciousness showing each other things we find funny or interesting, and if you view your blog the same way you will have a much more enjoyable experience.

Do not let them erase this. Do not let them tell you he meant "my heart goes out for you."
This man is the grandson of a Canadian Nazi sympathizer who moved to South Africa BECAUSE he thought the apartheid was just the coolest.
He has a gaggle of kids specifically because he believes his genes are superior and need to be spread to improve humanity.
He has thrown his support behind the neonazi party in Germany and the far right party in the UK, not to mention how far he's wormed up the ass of the Republican party.
He threw two sieg heil salutes back to back at the inauguration of the president of the United States and is trying to scrub the evidence off the internet.
Elon Reeve Musk is a fucking Nazi.

There seems to be a general malaise on most of Tumblr about TikTok getting banned in the United States.
I understand the problems, "brain rot", whatever but- A government banning a social media app that opened the world for many people is legitimately scary and upsetting. Say what you want but, there are MANY global and local issues that would not have gotten the same traction, recognition, and outreach without TikTok.
And then add to this that Meta/Facebook was one the largest lobbyists working to get TikTok banned... Like- I think folks should be more concerned about the implications of what this means, especially since the ban goes into effect the day before inauguration.

I think there's a lot of optimism around American kids moving to REDNote as an antidote to the, frankly, ridiculous propaganda that Americans have been filled with regarding China and the Chinese people since birth. I have met Americans who believe that all of the Red Scare era propaganda about China, from breadlines to mass executions, is still the case for ordinary citizens in Beijing (and very few Americans who can name Chengdu and Guangzhou).
However, Chinese people on the app are often attempting to warn you, in a very polite and evasive Chinese soc. med. way, that REDNote content is still strictly moderated and content critical of the state (Uyghurs, the recent invasion of Hong Kong, even the economy!!) or supportive of certain identities the state is not cool with right now (Muslims, queer people, etc) is routinely deleted, blocked and so on.
I'm concerned because discussing any subject deemed political in a Chinese context often requires knowing a second language of nuanced implications and statements that can be gleaned through what's not said rather than what is. I've seen American kids claiming that because China is a "communist country" (yes a communist country with the second most billionaires in the world 🙄) it doesn't even have a right-wing that could be onboarding you with shitty ideas, but well, that's very much not the case, and the Chinese online right even has words for white people like this lol. The same way the United States portrays China as a dirty country of starving peasants, China portrays the United States as extremely socially divided due to a lack of racial hegemony and nationalist (by which they mean neo-Confucian collectivist) spirit.
Individual people in both countries are cool, but American kids moving to REDNote, where they can't even discuss minority issues and are forced to play within the sandbox of a government that is just as censorious and diabolical as the United States, isn't going to end racism lol, especially not if these kids lack the necessary education and awareness of Chinese culture, history and social issues to actually meaningfully learn from the experience and what the Chinese users are saying without saying.
Anyway, it is deeply frustrating that the trend of social media, from Yahoo-Tumblr to whatever happened to twitter to this, is censorship laced with -phobia and -ism.

Playing The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog without having any context for who the characters are is such an emotional rollercoaster. 90% of my Sonic knowledge came from cultural osmosis and an anime I watched as a child, and now I'm being introduced to these characters at a birthday party and they're all insane. The lizard is a ninja who can read my mind, the cat is a princess from another dimension, and the bat just tried to rob me.

'People are panicking about AI tools the same way they did when the calculator was invented, stop worrying' cannot stress enough the calculator did not forcibly pervade every aspect of our lives, has such a low error rate it's a statistical anomaly when it does happen, isn't built on mass plagiarism, and does not obliterate the fucking environment when you use it. Be so fucking serious right now

For the record, I would never knowingly use or share AI generated art in anything I post, so if you ever catch me doing so, it was an accident, and I'd like you to let me know so I can delete it.
