Some Headcanons inbetween asks: --Hestia and Odette are both hella creeped out by dolls: Hestia has a potent fear of Banette, so she avoids dolls at all cost, and Odette thinks porcelain dolls specifically are creepy and they freak her out. Odette is also terrified of snake pokemon. --Robin is afraid of ghosts, and so is Russell --A note: The previous leader of Willow Town (Russell’s base) actually had two apprentices possibly. One being Russel, the other being Carys, another base leader we’ll get into soon. They were competing for the spot and he couldn’t choose, so he just requested the first ever double apprenticeship. --Hestia is really bad at puzzles and stuff that requires patience—shes never been a patient person, especially now, so she gets too frustrated and it never gets done. --People often assume Lethe and Odette are dating, when they are in fact Strictly best friends and have other people they’re interested in. --Hestia is an orphan. She’s also the rookie of Willow Town Base. --Odette, Pomona, and Lethe all went to the academy together. Lethe actually became a ranger by accident---he was originally at the academy as it’s custodian. --Hestia will “teehee” when she’s lying

Odette didn’t consider herself to be a very snoopy person—in fact, to be perfectly frank, she abhorred invasions of privacy. She didn’t think it was right to force yourself into another’s private life, to go rooting through their closely kept secrets with eager fingers. It was a virtue she held very dearly.
But, of course, everything had to have an exception. That exception, it seemed, was Lethe.
She had known him closely for some years now—they had gone to school together, after all. Lethe was a sweet, kind tempered boy, always doing his best, despite being a little weak in his resolve. Valor was not his strong suit. More importantly, he was an open book, when it came to his emotions, wearing his heart on his sleeve (whether he realized it or not.) He rarely hid anything, no matter how big or small, never lied, never even swore—because the weight of a guilty conscience would break his resolve faster than a brick shattering a pane of glass.
So with all this in mind, Odette was more than a little concerned when he started sneaking out at night, long after base curfew, retreating somewhere into the woods until almost daybreak. According to Pomona— who was a night owl more often than not—he had only started doing this nightly routine very recently, and when questioned, he feigned ignorance, or simply refused to answer.
When Odette herself questioned him, she had received a very curt, but very nervous, “Y-you shouldn’t waste your concern with me, Ettie. I’m sure you have more important things to worry about, instead of what a boring mess like me is up to, haha.”
She frowned at him. “That’s a terrible thing to say, Lettie.“
“Don’t worry about me.” He repeated, putting on a very forced smile. “I—I’m an apprentice, you know? I can take care of myself.” He turned on his heel to hurry away from her, never once looking back.
She could practically see the anxiety induced sweat on his brow. That should have been enough to tell her that whatever he was doing wasn’t sitting right with his conscience.
Odette, despite her gut feelings, had tried to brush it off as him simply needing time alone, or perhaps he took it upon himself to suddenly take over the night shift. She repeatedly gave him the benefit of the doubt, even going so far as to not inform Hades of the situation (yet). But after the first, third, fifth week of fake answers, skittish behavior, and nightly retreats? Her own conscience could no longer stand by idly. Just this once, she betrayed her own moral conduct, and decided she would find out what he was hiding by herself. If it was something that could put him—or anyone else—in danger, she had to intervene.
She hoped she was mistaken, and that it really was nothing.
—-
9:00 on the dot.
Just as she thought, Lethe was there, idling by the edge of the woods, bundled in his thickest coat, eyes scanning the area for any possible prying eyes. She was there as well, crouched just below the treeline and out of sight, bright and eye catching hair covered by her darkest knit hat.
She’d never tailed anyone before, but she’d try her best.
——
“There you are, my boy!”
The shrill voice stood starkly against the somber, quiet atmosphere of the woods. It wasn’t hard for Odette to pick up on it, even at her comfortable distance. Peeking over her shrub shelter, she could make out the candle lit features of Lethe, smiling at the oddly affectionate name like a child being praised. With him, ruffling his earthy hair, was a fairly tall woman. Her bright pink hair sticking out like a sore thumb against the usual doom and gloom of the surrounding area, ruby eyes mirthful, crinkling at the edges as her smile stretched across her features. It was an incredibly unnerving, disarming sort of grin, a Chesire smile in its purest definition, a smile that barely concealed the true intentions behind it. To say it gave Odette chills was an understatement.
The woman wiped fake tears from her face with her (surprisingly well made) pocket hankey. “How dare you worry me so, by showing up late! I ought to scold you.”
Lethe laughed—something he rarely did genuinely, even around her or Hades—pulling something out of his coat pocket. “I’m sorry about that—I ended up having to take the long way around to get here, for... security reasons.”
Long way around was an understatement, as Odette’s sore legs would testify to in the morning.
The woman’s smile faltered. “...Security reasons? You were followed?”
“No, thankfully. But...I’ve been getting questions. I didn’t want to chance anyone tailing me.” His smile also faded, that telltale guilt weighing heavy on his brow. He hesitated. “...I think my friends are upset with me. Are...are you sure this will be worth it…?”
There was a pregnant silence, the world in the woods becoming still once more. The Woman’s expression was unreadable, staring at him, and yet, through him. She suddenly brought Lethe into a gentle embrace, a hug he accepted surprisingly quickly, although his arms still hung limply at his sides, unsure of what to do. Her voice was gentle, motherly, sugar coated to the highest degree. Sickeningly saccharine. “Don’t you worry one bit about them. I promise, it’s all for the greater good.”
With Lethe so comfortably turned around, his back turned away from Odette and the rest of the world, it wasn’t hard for The Woman to open her eyes, tilt her head slightly, and send a disturbing, cold glare directly at her.
Odette froze, the chills coming back, paralyzing her on the spot, wracking her with something familiar--it was akin to fear.
She knew Odette was listening. She knew exactly where she was hiding. She knew the whole time. She had chosen to leave Odette in suspense. That fact alone was more terrifying than she could put into words. Her better instincts forced her to remain still, instead of running like the back of her mind was screaming at her to do. Not yet.
The woman mouthed something, her stare still piercing, unfeeling.
‘Know your place.’
The woman broke eye contact, letting go of Lethe, planting her hands on his shoulders. Odette was anticipating The Woman outing her, waiting for her to so easily point Lethe in her direction and sever any trust left between them. ‘Or to do worse’, a darker part of her thought. But, for reasons Odette would never figure out, she didn’t. She merely smiled that disarming smile again.
“They’ll understand in due time.”
Lethe brightened, relaxed, trusting her words implicitly. “I hope you’re right. I..don’t think I could bear it if I lost them.”
“Of course I'm right, dearie.” She was confident, so sure of her words. “Trust me, I’ve been around the block enough to know these things.”
Lethe suddenly remembered the notebook still in his hands. “Oh, yes, by the way! I have this week's notes about--“
The Woman quickly and firmly shushed him. “No, no. Not here, not here. You know what they say about prying ears and little birdies.” Odette didn’t miss the emphasis, or the sudden feeling of eyes on her again. She swallowed thickly.
Lethe withered. “Ah, right. Sorry, Miss Cerise.”
This “Cerise” Woman (Odette could only assume that was her real name, but there was no certainty) gestured towards the darker end of the forest, leading him away. “You should really be more cautious with that mouth of yours.”
“Y-yes, of course.”
“By the way, there’s somewhere I’d like you to go within the next week—-“
Their voices gradually faded into the distance, once again leaving Odette in the silence of the wood. She was still frozen, not daring to move an inch, scared to so much as breathe. She could barely process what has just transpired.
All she knew was that woman was dangerous.

When Hestia awoke, her arms were tied, and her head ached. She blinked blearily, feeling the cold metal of the pole she was tied to against her back. Something was missing, something important, but her head hurt too much to process exactly what. Until she looked down at her belt, now empty of everything, from her equipment to her---
Lantern.
Her mind went into overdrive. Where was it? Where was it?!
“Oho, look whose awake.”
That voice. Hestia glared daggers at the pink haired woman, only for her face to pale when she saw what she was holding.
“Oh, now what’s that dreadful look for?” She purred, dangling the lantern from her hand. She feigned a gasp. “Could it be this?”
“Give that back!!” Hestia screamed. “You don’t know what you’re doing!”
“But, I think I do.” She smiled a terrible smile, testing it’s weight in her hands. Her voice dropped low, sickeningly calm now. “If something happens to this, you’ll be out of my hair. Wouldn’t that be tragic?”
Hestia’s heart stopped. She struggled to free herself, but the ropes only chaffed. The woman giggled at her struggling, gently placing the lantern on the ground.
“Goodbye, Hestia.”
The only sound she could hear was the sound of breaking glass under boot--
Hestia woke up with a gasp, sweating more than she had in her entire life. She frantically looked around, her heart pounding in her chest. Her lantern was intact, safe on her bed stand where she always kept it. She breathed a sigh of relief, gingerly taking it in her arms, as if protecting it could give her the sense of peace that had been taken from her so many times. She had that nightmare so, so many times, but the fear never went away. The fear of her never went away. It always lingered, a reminder of what she was working towards, and what she must avoid at all costs. She buried her face in her hands. Sleep wouldn’t be happening it seemed.

Introduction post: Hades Base
Hades
The leader of the Cypress Base, Hades is a confident transman who leads with a rather cool head. In his past, he was a very feared individual known as “Hel, ruler of hell” due to his grip on the gang life of the region. He’s done things he’s not proud of and would likely never talk about. A skilled climber and dedicated to his job and training of his partner Drednaw Cerberus– he’s just a supportive dad figure. Has known Russell for many years, as they were partners in crime, and as mentioned, is a sort of father figure to Lethe. Persephone and Thanatos
Persephone Operator of Hades' base, and later on his lover. She's a gentle and doting operator with medical experience that is on par with the Joy family. Prior to becoming an operator, she was a therapist that specialized in ranger work. Unless something absolutely threatens your life, your secrets are likely safest with her. Thanatos The mechanic of Hades base, he does his job diligently even the parts no one likes and it takes a lot to get him to stop. Tired most of the time. Odette
A bright, patient, and big hearted young woman from the Hoenn region, working as a pokemon ranger--her mind is sharp, but she can be a little more oblivious than she’d like to admit when it comes to directions, which often gets her lost and has made her a constant trouble magnet. Isn’t very much a romantic despite appearances, but has garnered the attention of many because of her prim and demure appearance and kind personality. Rarely goes a day without someone trying to get a date out of her. Clumsy with her hands but light on her feet—took many years of ballet and fighting classes on her parents suggestion, is very fit despite her size. Was raised by a family of well known doctors and surgeons, the most notable being her father. Has a Swanna, Vee. Pomona
A cryptic person from the deserts of Unova, often scares people because of her gangly appearance, how she walks without making noise, and her plague doctor mask. Has an affinity for puns and also cultivating her image as a Local Cryptid in her spare time. Has a bit of a tragic backstory, but the important takeaways from that is that she has a hatred of doctors, the smell of hospitals, and herself. She works through her self-loathing over the course of her story, but for 97% of the story, wouldn't be caught dead with her skin showing, as a good majority of her skin below her neck is covered in scars. Self-conscious about her appearance to a fault, no matter the weather, she will always be seen with her plague doctor mask, long sleeves, and gloves. Little bit of a goofball, gets nervous easily. Has a slow burn crush on Odette. Is often caught stuffing nice smelling things in her beak. Has ageusia and nerve damage in most parts of her body below her neck, but especially her hands, so she drops things often. Has a Spritzee, Maggi! Athena
Quiet and shy, most people think Athena is either innocent/naive or coldhearted, but she sees and hears a lot more than they give her credit for. Once they get to know her, most people are surprised to find out that she has a wicked sense of humor, and loves to make puns. She has talent for stealth and moving silently, which is surprising considering her height, and often seems to just appear somewhere (usually startling someone). In general, she is calm, level headed, and takes almost everything in stride, but she has an undercurrent of anxiety behind her poker face. Between this and being a lonely child, she has read a lot of books and picked up an array of various skills. Some of these are useful (first aid skills, lock picking), some of them aren't (encyclopedic knowledge of regional myths, random facts). She is fiercely loyal to Pokemon (especially her partner) and the small handful of individuals that have gotten past her many masks. Her partner Pokemon is an Absol named Tyche, who befriended her when she was fairly young. Lethe (Apprentice)
The least energetic of the apprentices, Lethe is a troubled but soft hearted boy who didn’t intend to become a Ranger at all–he was living by himself with no income for years, on account of having no parents to speak of (abandonment issues ahoy)–his recommendation to the academy was a complete accident, but the school had free boarding and it gave him a purpose, so he took the opportunity while he had it. While he loves what he does, and has made two good friends out of this, he’s struggling to come to terms with his issues and struggles to keep up with his peers. He tends to be a trouble magnet, so the plot hammer will not be kind to him umu. He’s a bit indecisive, timid and an easy crier, but he genuinely loves pokemon/people and wants to be of use to everyone somehow. He’s not much of a logistical thinker but he’s definitely not a pushover physically, which comes in handy–he has no partner pokemon for plot reasons. Robin
Hailing from the Sinnoh region Robin came to Asnia to become a ranger. She’s a very kindhearted person but can be a bit dense when it comes to obvious things, but that doesn’t stop her from jumping over the moon and back to help someone in need. She’s very strong and often trains with one of her partner pokemon, Jesper the bunnelby. (Jesper’s hole digging often causes more chaos then it should)
Cassian:
He’s outgoing, happy go lucky kind of guy! He enjoys listening to others talk, and likely to ask you how your entire day went without interrupting. His jokes tend to be positive and usually uplifting and a lot of people just generally enjoying his company. Light bit of a flirt, but he never continues if any hint of uncomfortableness. He’s very prone to smiling away his troubles. Any hints of sadness detected and asked about, he’ll immediately mask and deflect it in an attempt to keep from talking about it/bring down the mood. Sometimes he bottles it up too bad that those who care about him have to seriously sit him down and ask

Introduction post: Russell’s base
Russell (Base leader)
The Base Leader of Willow Town, Russell is a gentle tempered man who cares deeply for his town and base members. People often give him guff about being soft hearted, but he can be stern when the need calls for. Sensitive about the scars on his face and his age, has worked closely with the other base leaders for a long time. His trusted partner is a Corviknight, Cobalt, who can usually be seen perched on top of the base. Terrified of ghosts/creepy places (ironic because he works in the spooky part of Asnia–the local ghost types like to pick on him). Usually seen helping old ladies across the street and chopping fire wood. (art a collab between me and roseheart-exe) Hestia (Apprentice)
Hestia is a cryptic but very sweet and dedicated girl from Laverre City, Kalos. She often gives off the vibes that she knows more than she lets on, and often speak in riddles or vague non sequiturs. Locals tend to be unnerved by her general disposition, comparing her to a “ghost, at best”. She hates fire, is creeped out by dolls of any sort, and is easy to startle, despite her best efforts to appear calm and collected. Hestia tries to be kind and amiable, and loves her few friends very deeply, but she’s incredibly stubborn and refuses help when she needs it. Her upbringing made her a firm believer in self reliance. She dislikes people who pry or ask too many questions, and worries over others constantly. She looks up to Russell as a mentor and is especially close to him. Her Pokemon is a Lampent, Chandelle (Chandy). She’s never seen without her hat or her lantern, which glows very dimly–she’s very possessive of them and avoids questions regarding either.
Artemis
She's a very rule abiding, no nonsense, has-to-follow-the-rules-exactly-or-she'll-die kind of person. Has gifted child anxiety so gets flustered when things dont go right, is very Smart and knows alot of things about books. She cares about Hestia very much, as she's the first person in a long time to put up with her serious personality. Likes hats, although she doesn't wear any on the job for fear of losing them. Her partner is a winter Deerling named Sunflower ! Selene
Selene is the grumpy mom friend! Suspicious of pretty much everyone and has some pretty good intuition of her own, and would pick up on Hestia’s suspicious activity instantly. She has a tendency to nitpick. She can and Will clean up after everyone. Also despite her grumpy exterior 24/7, she really does care about her fellow base members. Has a Durant, Luna!
Emile
Emile just wants the best for his friends and would be content if he got to spend all day in a library. Ultimately, he’s a ranger bc it lets him get a really good idea of the land which fuels his cartography hobby. Emile’s parents love him very much!! He feels comfortable enough to go to them with his worries, and they are just V Good. He has a good and loving family and he loves them just as much as they love him!! He doesn’t bear much physical resemblance to his family, but he doesn’t mind all too much. He's a cartographer! He draws up maps for the base, he and Hestia talk alot: He doesnt know his birth mom.
Damien
Damien used to work as a ranger in a different region before he was transferred to Asnia. He used to be very outgoing and a lot more confident in his craft, until an incident happened which nearly killed him. He was deeply traumatized by that event, and considering the man was still roaming around the region they decided it was best to transfer him to the Asnia region to continue being a ranger. Now that he’s there he seems to be a lot more relaxed than he was after the incident, however he is still highly anxious and has a hard time going out to patrol on his own, especially in the later hours of the evening. Hates bug types with a passion.
Apollo
Apollo worked in Russel’s base for quite awhile as the mechanic. He normally stuck to the usual procedures with things, however one day while trying to fix a styler that had gotten broken on the job, the machine had exploded, causing bad burns to the right side of his body- his Glaceon attempted to help him by cooling down the burns with its ice, unfortunately it did make it worse so now he has some old burn scars along the right side of his body. Despite this hes still very passionate about his job and continues to do it eagerly, however he’s much more careful about how he goes about it-
