I’ve been thinking about this question in terms of autistic folks and literal thinking and I wanted to get an understanding for it in accordance to others

I noticed a question related to this phrase is on certain autistic exams and I wanted to get more insight to those who have trouble understanding idioms. Personally, I’ve always liked idioms and metaphors, so I always thought I never had this trait (before I realized my literal thinking was more towards types of sarcasm and vague language around tasks).

The toxic positivity that is so often pushed on autistics is so exhausting for so many reasons. It feels like whenever I complain or express frustration about something to do with my autism, people (not just neurotypical people, I even get this from other autistics) are so quick to jump in with the ‘but autism isn’t bad! It’s just a different way to be wired! You’re using eugenicist talking points!’ Or talk about the social model of disability and how everything that I struggle with is only an issue because of society or whatever.

Like, when I complain about my sensory issues or my communication difficulties making my life more difficult that is not me advocating for autism to be wiped out. That’s not what I’m fucking saying at all. I’m just trying to say that this thing that I deal with is hard for me and it feels like I’m not allowed to say that. The social model of disability is great, especially for urban planning, but it isn’t all-encompassing or perfect and I would still deal with these issues even if I only ever interacted with other autistic people and only went to ‘sensory friendly’ spaces, or honestly even if the whole built environment around me was made accessible.

Sometimes my autism is disabling and prevents me from being able to do things, and pretending that isn’t the case doesn’t do anything except silence me and protect your feelings about my disability.

There is a middle ground between this toxic positivity/equating autism to just being a bit ‘funny and quirky’ and the misinformation that I grew up hearing from Autism Speaks and other hate groups. There are parts of my autism that are actually pretty sick and that I would not be myself without, like my special interests and hyperfixations (I am using these words as they are defined in the DSM-V here, not in the way they’re often used on the internet) but even those parts can contribute to making my life harder.

I’m not saying that I want us to go out and ‘cure autism’ when I say that I wish I could communicate more easily with the people around me. I’m allowed to be frustrated about the fact that I have extra support needs without someone coming along and policing my language or chastising me for having feelings about MY life experience. Steamrolling over the real experiences of autistics because they don’t fit the sparkly trendy image of autism that you want to present to the world is so shitty and just leaves behind people that can’t meet that standard.

Here’s something I’m curious about.

Picture this. You’re reading a book, a standard book divided into chapters. Let’s say it’s fiction (don’t know if nonfiction would get different results). You’ve been reading for a while and you want to stop for now. Assume you are not literally falling asleep, you’re still awake and lucid.

You are in the middle of a paragraph, in the middle of a page, somewhere in the middle of a chapter in the middle of the book.

“Power through and finish the book” is not an option, but if you really do that you have my sympathies.

I hate how random panic attacks can be. Day going fine? Panic attack! Nice and relaxed? Panic attack! Trying to sleep? Panic attack!

Sick of people saying "you need therapy" about my disabilities and traits that are normal for me and cannot be changed. Not everything can just be magically fixed by therapy. And not everything can ever be fixed. Sometimes there is no cure and this is just how a person exists. Are you okay with disabled people existing? Or do you genuinely believe its okay to attempt to eradicate them because you disagree with the way they exist?

Re-Animator (1985)

Baba Anujka, born Ana di Pištonja around 1838, was a Serbian herbalist and self-proclaimed witch who gained notoriety as one of the world’s oldest serial killers.

She was active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was responsible for the deaths of at least 50 people, though some estimates suggest her body count may have been as high as 150. Using her knowledge of herbs and poisons, Baba Anujka prepared lethal concoctions for clients who sought her services, often to rid themselves of unwanted spouses or relatives.

Operating out of her home in the village of Vladimirovac, Serbia, Baba Anujka became known as a "wise woman" who could provide remedies and solutions for all kinds of problems. She claimed her potions were harmless but would offer what she called her "magic water" to those seeking a deadly solution, especially in cases of domestic disputes. These potions were laced with arsenic and other toxic substances and would cause victims to fall ill and die within days, making their deaths appear natural.

Baba Anujka managed to evade detection for decades due to her remote location and the trust placed in her by the locals. However, in 1928, a dissatisfied client reported her to police after the suspicious deaths of two victims. She was arrested and, at the age of 90, was convicted of multiple murders. In 1929, Baba Anujka was sentenced to 15 years in prison, though she was released after serving only eight years due to her advanced age. She died in 1938, shortly after her release.
