New Film “Ayanda” Is a Vivid Picture of Youth Culture in South Africa
Ayanda is the lead female character I’ve been waiting for.
In South African director Sarah Blecher’s coming-of-age drama, Ayanda, a young woman struggles to save her late father’s car repair shop as she also tries to preserve her memory of him. Set in the bustling, colorful Johannesburg suburb of Yeoville, the film puts South Africa’s contemporary Black youth culture into sharp focus. It centers on an engrossing 21-year-old mechanic who’s full of life, stubbornness, wit. Vibrantly played by newcomer Fulu Mughovani, Ayanda’s journey comes to symbolize tensions between old and new, tradition and change, and history and memory can be a force of imprisonment or freedom—particularly in South Africa.

" As soon as I got to the bathroom he forced me to my knees. I said 'stop!' but he just became more violent." This is part of @ambertheactivist story. She took this picture minutes after she was raped last night. With it, she shares her story instead of being silenced by shame. She has chosen to speak up about the violation of her rights as a woman, and with her story and the work she does, we hope she has given other women the strength to speak up as well. As Artribution we share Amber's story with the hope that all women realise they need not feel guilty or ashamed for being victims of rape. Instead they should speak up and fight for justice. #UsingArt2Contribute #JusticeForAmber #StopRapeEducate #AfricanArt #SpeakUp

The beauty of Art is that, it allows us to tell our stories. The Nest has done just that and we hope they're initiative spreads through the entire continent. Two years ago, they began a documentary research project called Stories of Our Lives, whose aim was to collect and archive stories about the Kenyan queer experience, in order to counter the populist idea that ‘gayism is un-African’. They collected over 250 anonymous audio stories from some amazing people they met across the country - stories of first loves, heartbreaks, future hopes, acceptance, rejection and intimate humanness. As part of their plan to share these stories, they made a film based on some of them - also called ‘Stories Of Our Lives’. #themes #proudltkenyian #lgbt #Africanartist #UsingArt2Contribute #tellyourstory

Too many lives lost senselessly on our continent every day. And nobody will stop these wars amongst ourselves but us. "We are the leaders we have been waiting for" Africa 2.0. This morning we learn of 32 lives lost to bombings by Boko Haram, it will take all of us acting together to build a continent that lives to fulfill its huge potential." - Ntombenhle Khathwane  This includes African Artists taking their art and letting it speak to those who no longer want to listen. It is our duty to remind Africans of Africa's full potential.  ‪#‎AfricanArt‬ ‪#‎ProudlyNigerian‬‪#‎SpeakwithArt‬ ‪#‎UsingArt2Contribute‬ Picture by:ForeverBlackEffusion
