✖️“Anyone Can Wear the Mask”🕷 For a long time, not everyone could wear the mask. For a long time, certain people could only wear masks of stereotypes, racist tropes, and passive misogyny. This last year we saw a major shift in the stories that were being told and we witnessed a movement. One story that really spoke to me was that of Miles Morales— An Afro-Latinx character from Brooklyn who took on the legacy moniker of Spider-Man. When Miles was first introduced in 2011, Marvel received major backlash for "turning Spider-Man black." Racist dialogue filled the internet but the company muted the criticism and continued to move forward. They set the example then, that "Anyone Can Wear the Mask." Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse starring Miles hit the big screen late last year and has now spawned a #1 Soundtrack, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and most recently an Academy Award.  Since his introduction, Miles has paved the way for characters like Sam Wilson, Jane Foster, Amadeus Cho, Laura Kinney, America Chavez, Riri William, and Kamala Khan. As a filmmaker and creative, I'm excited about the future now —because, for a long time, I wasn't. For me, as a person of color, "Anyone Can Wear the Mask" has a very distinct and special meaning.
