Klapollo Minibang 2024

For this year's @klapollo-minibang I made an illustration for the fic The Search for Eldoon-rado written by @arsenic-addiction

Summary:

The Gavin Brother's Trade Company dominated the global spice trade. When Kristoph learns about a mythical salt suddenly gold meant nothing. Having sent off Klavier to obtain it, the venture ended in failure. His brother had never returned. After 2 years the obsession never wavered. Not one to give up he now dispatched his new apprentice, Apollo Justice.

My contribution to the Klapollo Minibang 2022. (if there's any confusion about why the characters might look different, it was a commission essentially)

I was holding off posting it since they were for scenes near the end of the story. I didn't want to spoil it. 

However, that later chapter may not ever exist so I want to finally share it. I figured it would be perfect for Valentine's Day.

This is one of those pieces though that I tweaked so much that I just had to eventually call it done. I’m pretty happy all things considered but I struggled a lot with Simon. 

I know the “request idea” was for Simon to have black shorts but it didn’t look good when I did it...so khaki it is. I imagine that Athena got him the outfit and he loves her too much to actually say no. (Athena thought the picture was a little plain so added stickers)

My head canon of these two is that Nahyuta is flirty and likes to get up in Simon’s personal space because he knows it flusters him. Simon gets all grumpy because he secretly likes it but hates that he reacts to it.

My long ass project is finished! I heard this basic quote from the song “Red Heart Black” by Dragonette...and was like yes, I HAVE to make this. 

I wanted to explore more of Kristoph’s background because I can’t believe he’s been evil all his life. This was the first time I have ever drawn him, but I think he came out pretty well! The first one with the more traditional Kristoph imagery was actually the most difficult. I had figured out the other ones right away but tried to do something a bit different with the “current” Kristoph. 

More tidbits of details if you want to read them:

The cap and gown were so hard to draw that he almost didn’t graduate! ;) I made an educated guess about what year he graduated based on the official ages. So, 2012 it was! A little nod to the investigations game: his pin is the same one Sebastion wears on his school jacket.

Again, I tried to make an accurate assumption with when he would have established his office. I had to consider that he committed his crimes in 2019, and still give a decent time to establish his “coolest defense in the West” reputation. With his law office outfit, I figured while he was still younger, he would have had a bit of stylish flair like Klavier is known for. Hence the bolder tie he’s wearing. Plus, those Gavin brothers love their purples!

With the first one (the one I finished last ironically) I clocked it and spent 14+ hours on it. That does include making all the character cards for the background. I will be posting them soon but don’t really feel like doing an art dump at the moment. Maybe it will give time to highlight the main piece. Not like anyone is seriously waiting with breath. 

Regardless I hope someone out there enjoys them!
