Why aren't we talking about the real reason male college enrollment is dropping? (Celeste Davis, Oct 6 2024)
"White flight is a term that describes how white people move out of neighborhoods when more people of color move in.
White flight is especially common when minority populations become the majority. That neighborhood then declines in value.
Male flight describes a similar phenomenon when large numbers of females enter a profession, group, hobby or industry—the men leave. That industry is then devalued.
Take veterinary school for example:
In 1969 almost all veterinary students were male at 89%.
By 1987, male enrollment was equal to female at 50%.
By 2009, male enrollment in veterinary schools had plummeted to 22.4%
A sociologist studying gender in veterinary schools, Dr. Anne Lincoln says that in an attempt to describe this drastic drop in male enrollment, many keep pointing to financial reasons like the debt-to-income ratio or the high cost of schooling.
But Lincoln’s research found that “men and women are equally affected by tuition and salaries.”
Her research shows that the reason fewer men are enrolling in veterinary school boils down to one factor: the number of women in the classroom.
For every 1% increase in the proportion of women in the student body, 1.7 fewer men applied.
One more woman applying was a greater deterrent than $1000 in extra tuition! (…)
Since males had dominated these professions for centuries, you would think they would leave slowly, hesitantly or maybe linger at 40%, 35%, 30%, but that’s not what happens.
Once the tipping point reaches majority female- the men flee. And boy do they flee!
It’s a slippery slope. When the number of women hits 60% the men who are there make a swift exit and other men stop joining.
Morty Schapiro, economist and former president of Northwestern University has noticed this trend when studying college enrollment numbers across universities:
“There’s a cliff you fall off once you become 60/40 female/male. It then becomes exponentially more difficult to recruit men.”
Now we’ve reached that 60% point of no return for colleges.
As we’ve seen with teachers, nurses and interior design, once an institution is majority female, the public perception of its value plummets.
Scanning through Reddit and Quora threads, many men seem to be in agreement - college is stupid and unnecessary.
A waste of time and money. You’re much better off going into the trades, a tech boot camp or becoming an entrepreneur. No need for college. (…)
When mostly men went to college? Prestigious. Aspirational. Important.
Now that mostly women go to college? Unnecessary. De-valued. A bad choice. (…)
School is now feminine. College is feminine. And rule #1 if you want to safely navigate this world as a man? Avoid the feminine.
But we don’t seem to want to talk about that."

Is My Blue Your Blue? A visual perception test that judges what you call blue and green and compares it with others’ results. I am “bluer than 68% of the population.” Now do red/pink, red/orange, and blue/purple!

What the fuck do they mean by taking a neutral stance on "prohibited discriminatory practices" and anti-racism???

Well this just encouraged me to actually write the story I've been planning for a while now.
Honestly it would be so fun to see a show that throws characters from the cliché standard European fantasy setting and characters from Asian fantasy setting into the same story. Specifically in a way where both sides are depicted faithfully to their respective cultures, written by people familiar with the source material. Imagine throwing Boromir into a wuxia film or Geralt of Rivia into fantasy-equivalent Joseon.
All tropes played straight and clashing into each other - language barrier optional, depending on which option is funnier. One side going "look at my awesome sword, I could kill a dragon with this" to be responded with "that's fucked up, why would you even want to do that."
I don't know what kind of a plot framework this would even work with, I just think it would be funny to see. One side going "wow the people of this strange land sure have mysterious ways and strange taboos", and the other side going "your highness your pet foreigners are fucking feral. They're doing things."

Of all the criticisms that Marvel/the MCU gets, the one I can’t get behind is the “aimlessness” critique. Maybe this is just me, but I like world-building and getting to explore different characters. I also like how each project since Phase 3 has been its own thing, whether it’s a take on wuxia, a Christmas adventure, a horror movie, or a spy thriller. But the fact that so many people are clamoring for the next big team-up is…well, it feels disappointing.
For me, it feels like people aren’t really trying to watch the content. Instead, it’s watching the content in order to get hints of what the next big content will be. I saw this a lot when Ms. Marvel dropped the M word. The whole discussion about the show just became about the future of the X-Men instead of discussing what actually was shown in the show, like the exploration of the Partition or Kamala’s coming-of-age journey.
Along the same lines of “aimlessness”, it annoys me immensely whenever I scroll through the Marvel subreddits and see that people aren’t sure who the “main character” is of Phase 4 and 5. Because, yes, even though multiple heroes are getting their own titles, the MCU absolutely needs to have a main character (this is sarcasm). I don’t want to drop the r*a*c*i*s*t word, or even the s/e/x/i/s/t word because that might be an overblown statement…but I’m not gonna lie, it’s a little uncomfortable that people are looking at the current roster of heroes and going, “None of them feel like the main character!”
It’s just…ugh. I hate how a lot of discussions I’m seeing in the Marvel fandom are about wondering what the next major event crossover is instead of just enjoying the actual content. I don’t really care about Moon Knight becoming an Avenger, I care more about how Marc and Steven will react when they learn about Jake. Does that make sense?
Not to say that I’m not excited about the 2025 Avengers movies, because I am. It just feels like people are so desperate to have that Infinity War/Endgame experience again that we aren’t actually enjoying the content anymore. And by the way, crossover event fatigue is an actual thing! That’s what happened in the comics! Just saying.

hi Neil,
I think the Good Omens books are cursed to hold love. I will explain in a bit but here’s some (possibly unnecessary) context.
I picked up Good Omens on a not good mental health day. It was probably the best decision I’ve made when feeling not so great.
I found myself reading Good Omens much slower than I would normally. I really, really enjoyed the book. I wanted to draw out the experience of reading the book for the first time, and now I can’t wait to read it again.
Now, I made sure that the book would stay in perfect condition (because I read how many people have battered copies and I wasn’t going to be on of them). I wrapped it with clear wax paper, the corners of the book have clear tape so it wouldn’t fold or dog ear. I made sure to carry it in my book bad by putting it in a cloth pouch. I marked my favourite bits with one dot made with a pink pen, and on a separate sheet of paper wrote down page numbers to my favourite likes.
But here’s the bit about the curse.
The book — wrapped in wax paper and essentially water proofed now — steadily accumulated a million stains of coffee and tea on it. It even seeped through the wax paper somehow??? I also managed to close the book wrong one day so a few pages has unfixable creases in them. The pink pen bust open one day so the last 20ish pages have marble-effect pink lines all over them. The spine is completely cracked and I have NO idea how. I managed to trap air bubbles in the taped corner and the cover dog eared in a weird way. When I tried to get the air bubble out, I permanently taped the dog ear down on the cover. There’s a lot more that’s got this book looking very, very old all of a sudden. It looks more used and well-read that some of the books I’ve had for 10 years.
And think that’s the curse of Good Omens.
No matter how much you try to protect it from the stains and folds of the universe, the book will reflect how much you love it. Because it was like every time I picked up the book, I left a little mark on it. And I think that’s so weird, because usually stains and marks make me very upset. This book though, I’m glad it holds my love.
I hope you have an terrific day, Neil.
PS. I studied Coraline during my undergrad literature class, to study the form of Graphic Novels. It was deeply disturbing and made me realise I don’t even want to trade my life for the other-Me’s life. I do not want buttons for eyes, no sir thank you!!!
I love this account of keeping your book safe...
