I will never stop thinking about the dynamic between Scott and Jimmy in Third Life.

People love to act like one of them (usually scott) was toxic, but imo the (more interesting) reality is that they just wanted very different things.

Jimmy, undoubtedly, cared about Scott and their life together. But Jimmy- despite his reputation for being pathetic/naive/whatever other inaccurate exaggeration- is a very bold, ambitious, and prideful person. Jimmy wanted to make a reputation, a profit, a statement- you name it, Jimmy wanted it. Jimmy burned with the desire to be someone, and he pursued that. On many occasions, Jimmy felt like Scott was holding him back or didn't believe in/support him enough. Jimmy could never shake the thought that Scott believed he was too weak, and grew to resent Scott's devotion to diplomacy, viewing it as stifling and cowardly.

Scott, on the other hand, never wanted anything but Jimmy. Everything Scott did during Third Life was to keep them and their home safe. I fully believe that Scott would have been perfectly content to stay in their valley and just have a life with Jimmy. And naturally, Scott struggled to understand why Jimmy kept trying to throw that away, why Jimmy kept putting himself and their lives in danger, over and over. Scott was deeply scared by Jimmy's 'reckless' behavior, and sometimes he was harsh because of it, though he often was the one to give in for the sake of peace between them. They went to war against Dogwarts, in the end, and they died there.

Neither of them were bad or wrong. They struggled to communicate, maybe- multiple of their arguments would end with Jimmy shelving it, leaving to work on something else and neither of them even bringing it up again with Scott silently deciding to let Jimmy have his way- and didn't really understand the other. But neither of them had "bad" desires, and neither of them were "toxic" toward the other- they loved each other, despite it all, until they died- in any major way.

They just wanted very different things, irreconcilably, in a way that was always going to end up with at least one of them getting hurt, no matter how much they tried to avoid it. Especially in circumstances as brutal as a death game.

Sometimes nobody's the bad guy, sometimes you're just different people in an unkind world.

Impulse concept work for my Hermits are Space Orcs AU! Out of Boatem, he’s the closest to human (for Worldbuilding Reasons :]), but that means more room for me to fuck around with shapes and proportions! While he might look big and tough, he’s just as fragile as most denizens of space (excluding, of course, humans). An involuntary stint trapped on a death world left him with damaged lungs, so he wears a filtering mask to protect himself.
