Nowhere I’d Rather Be

He watches the ball hit the floor on the other side of the court, holding his breath, waiting for the confirmation that it’s in bounds and he’s not seeing things. The gym is loud, louder than anything he’s ever heard, and his heart thunders along with the screams of the crowd. He can practically feel the waves of anticipation and worry from the rest of the team, scattered over the court and sidelines, tense and still as they wait. Suga is right beside him, as he always is, one hand clenched in the fabric of Daichi’s jersey, the tiniest tremble just barely noticeable.

Then there’s the call, the roar of excitement as the scorecard gets flipped to the winning number, everything moving in fast forward as they realize that they’re won. Noya yells, nearly flying across the court to tackle Asahi, and Tsukishima lets out a disgruntled noise as Tanaka does the same to him. Daichi doesn’t get to see what happens after that though, because then Suga is right there, his hands braced on Daichi’s cheeks, pulling him in until all Daichi sees is those fluttering lashes before Suga’s lips are on his, warm and soft and so unexpected.

He can’t hear anything but the beating of his heart and the rush of blood in his ears. The screaming of the crowd has disappeared, the yells of his teammates muted. He can’t feel anything except Suga’s breath on his lips and his hands on his face, warm and sweaty even with his fingers partially taped. There’s a single moment he gets when Suga pulls away, blinks his eyes open to stare up into Daichi’s, something like worry clouding the excitement there, one moment when he realizes that even winning the game hadn’t felt this right.

Suga barely gets to move away before Daichi wraps his arms around his waist, squishing him tight to his chest as he leans in to kiss him again, deep and satisfying and perfect. The noise rushes back in, loud and exciting, the cheering of the team so close, and when Daichi pulls away again, Suga is right there, his grin brighter than the sun as he drapes his arms around Daichi’s neck.
