mia: he's also really not sensitive to the fact that a widow feels really disoriented when she's just lost her husband
mia: what am i supposed to do without my silly rabbit?
mack: be nice to me or i'm gonna haunt you
mack: unless that's what the widow wants...

it’s almost funny that two years apart yielded an easier reunion than one after two weeks of actively avoiding each other under the same roof. or, at the very least, josie had been avoiding him. it was one thing for her to spend the time coming to terms with how she felt for mack, certain that if she’d given herself enough time, just best friends would’ve been okay with her. and for the most part, it would be, but jealousy at what she’d seen had twisted its ugly roots in her heart that made it much more difficult to move past. josie tells herself she can move past the part of her that believes he doesn’t feel the same, but she can’t handle the ache that comes with missing his constant presence in her life, nor the one that comes with the knowledge that even the universe was content on keeping them apart after months of living together. it is weird, and oh, how she hates it. their first conversation is one she’s spent the better part of two weeks rehearsing in her head, as if getting the perfect lie down to a silence made up for the fact that it was one. because how did she tell her best friend she loved him when he was interested in someone else ? best friends to practically strangers was never the narrative they were supposed to settle on, hard enough to when they knew each other so well. it’s why he was here, wasn’t it ? because he knows how to see right through the brave face and warm smile she offers to everyone else ? josie closes the door behind him and its like the room feels smaller somehow. ❝ that’s never stopped you before, ❞ as if the joke would make it easier for to meet his gaze or move past the sudden barrier that exists between them ─ but it doesn’t. josie is endeared by his concern, as she always is, though it doesn’t stop the small sigh that she manages in response. ❝ i’ve always been pretty good at alone, and no loud roommates to keep me up at night ? i’ll sleep like a baby, ❞ and this lie, at least, has always been as easy as breathing. ❝ you didn’t have to come by, y’ken, i’m alright. ❞ i just miss you because it feels like we’re worlds apart.
despite josie’s joke, and mack’s (slightly forced) laugh in response, it’s never been more clear there’s something wrong. the halo of bright warmth she usually wears as a second skin is gone and in its place is a fog of wintry grey that frosts the air of her dorm. a chill settles over mack, and he’s quick to tell himself it’s just nerves. “no you won’t.” the response is automatic, he’s well aware she hasn’t slept like a baby in years, and she’s not going to start when she’s alone in her dorm with multiple students missing. then, his brain goes back over her words; her sigh. is she annoyed that he’s here? had he spent the last two weeks attempting to correct the way he’d overstepped only to force himself back into a space he’s not wanted the first chance he gets? there’s likely a million people she’d rather have comfort her, why else would she be pushing him away? basile’s probably on his way over, and she just wants to get mack out of her hair. it’s almost second nature to push again. mack is about to insist that no, she’s not alright, he knows her better than to believe that for a second. but he doesn’t. he’s spent every day since new year’s second guessing every interaction they’ve ever had, and the remaining unease chokes him before he can get another word out. maybe josie’s being honest with him. she’s insisting that she’s fine because she is, and this whole time he’s been making up stories in his head, seeing a place for him in her life where there isn’t one. she probably hasn’t even missed him since new year’s, and there’s no way she had been making herself crazy the way he had. is he as bad as his mom? is he so scared of losing her that he’s suffocating her? is he holding on to something that’s already slipped through his fingers? realization settles over him; the fog isn’t hers; it’s his. mack’s insecurities have smothered her warm light and left them both in the cold. his eyes drop, embarrassment tightening in his chest, but he forces himself to keep his tone level, chill. “aye, ‘course you are. just thought i should check in. but i can go if you want, maybe swing by a few of the others’ places.”

rhys.
HE’S NOT JEALOUS. he swears, he’s not a jealous person. when others in his music get praise for good work, he’s not sitting there and wallowing in his own self pity for not receiving the same praise. if a friend gets with a girl and he goes home alone, he’s not feeling sorry for himself. rhys taylor isn’t a jealous person across the board but when it comes to specific people, it’s a whole different story. or, so it seems. he SHOULDN’T be jealous of mack and alejandra getting together— he’d be a hypocrite otherwise. just as much as he shouldn’t be jealous, he shouldn’t feel any sort of RELIEF when mack reveals that he and alejandra were a one-time thing. nonetheless, he doesn’t let too much reveal on his features. he scoffs and shakes his head. "you are a CATCH, mckinley. this shouldn’t be news to you,“ he states. this much is true: he can feel however he does about the two of them getting together but it doesn’t change the fact that alejandra is attracted enough to get with mack. his brows furrow. ”avoided?“ he repeats. "if there's–” he sits back a little in the seat, gaze moving to the sky in front of them. "–if there’s one thing i’ve learned about alejandra in the past year or so, it’s that she’s hard to read. REALLY hard to read. so…“ he shrugs. "i wouldn’t read too much into it.” a glance at mack, accompanied by a smirk, as he says: "you’ll go mad otherwise.“
there’s something in the air on the mountains that afternoon, but mack can’t quite place what it is. rhys isn’t giving anything away, his tone casual and expression unreadable. maybe rhys is just the type to start a conversation with someone he hardly knows by bringing up their sex life. more specifically, their sex life as it involves a mutual friend. sure, maybe that’s totally normal for him; mack doesn’t know rhys well enough to overthink it. “you’re damn right i am.” he doesn’t believe it, but he’s happy to play along. “sometimes i forget gorgeous and funny is everyone’s type.” rhys adjusts beside him, and mack’s eyes land on his features, still neutral. “right, i can see that.” or, he kind of can. hard to read is one way to describe someone who hooks up with him in a coat closet only to avoid him immediately after. but ridiculously embarrassed of their actions is another, equally accurate way to describe them. and given mack’s track record, he thinks it’s safe to say that’s what it is. “seems like sound advice from a man with some experience reading too much into it. your prodigy giving you a hard time?” he says it casually, a laugh accompanying his words. he’s not digging, he tells himself, to ease his conscience. rhys doesn’t have to tell him anything, and mack will let the slightly uncomfortable conversation go if he does.

status : closed for @aquvmarines !
location : josie’s dorm 🧡
josie missed the comfort of the chateau the moment they left, the closeness of the rest of the society and the ability to pretend, for just a moment, that everything wasn’t amiss. but their return to strathmore reminds her all - too - well that nothing was normal, and that there seemed to be something new to worry about each day. weirder still is that she felt safer in a foreign country than she does in a dorm room she’s meant to have been calling home, catching one roommate on her way out. josie expected she’d still stay with her boyfriend, and promised to remind her about ra check - in, and was less surprised still to find that her second roommate had officially moved home to her parents in light of a second missing persons. and just like that, it was as empty and as lonely as it had ever been, and things were weird between her and the one person she wished was here. poised at the kitchen counter for the better part of the evening, there’s an uneasy that’s worked its way into her chest, because the thought of sleeping completely alone again was not one she was all too fond of, though it’s accompanied by a flutter of nerves at mack’s text. it is reassuring, but it seems about as much as they’ve said to each other in two weeks. and when the expected knock comes ─ weird still, considering he’s never had to ─ josie still manages to jump a little. she has to push herself on her tiptoes to confirm it’s him, but the second she does, the door is opened almost too eagerly, though coherent thought doesn’t seem to do the same despite the creeping relief at having mack here. ❝ hi. ❞
things are weird between mack and josie. they’ve hardly gone two hours without talking to each other since reuniting, but it’s been two weeks since they’ve had a real conversation. it’s mack’s fault, of course, for basically attacking her face on new year’s eve when he knew she would only ever see him as a friend. and now, he’s forced to reconcile his feelings with the reality of the situation. he doesn’t know if he’s ready to see her again; he still hasn’t prepared an apology for allowing his love for her to seep into their friendship and overstepping basically every single boundary, but his response to her texts come without a single thought for his own feelings. it doesn’t matter how awkward things are between them, he knows exactly how she gets, and he isn’t going to let her be alone when he knows she would never ask anyone for company. outside her door, he goes to let himself in, as he always does, but his hand stops on the doorknob. is he allowed to do that still? they had hardly seen each other, despite living in the same chalet. he knocks, and immediately regrets it; the formality of it only reinforcing how they have shifted. “hi,” he replies, just barely resisting the urge to wrap his arms around her as he steps into her dorm. “‘m sorry for inviting myself over, i just…” his voice trails off as he searches his mind for a joke; something about separation anxiety, or brandon missing her, or him needing a better audience than his roommates, but he comes up empty, forced to settle on the truth. “i didn’t want you to be alone.”

isadora.
it’s the first time in hours that she doesn’t hold her shield up ━ revealing every emotion that cascaded her face to show heartbreak. there’s a comfort she always found in mack, someone who knew how to make her smile when it was the last thing she wanted to do. however, she wasn’t sure what she wanted out of this encounter. she hadn’t really thought twice before dragging her feet over to his room, unsure if he was even there or if the short distance from room to room was for nothing. isadora felt bold enough to let life take the situation by the hand and lead her in any direction, unbothered on what the outcome would be ━ in this case, it’s her laying on mack’s room floor with a pout on her features. “i can say with full confidence that you are some of the best company a gal could ask for ━ that anyone could ask for.” she pauses. “i think it’s self explanatory by the way i’m laying on your floor right now. a plot twist i’ve learned is that misery does love company.” her nose wrinkles slightly, corners of her lips tugging downward and she angles her head in order to look up at mack. “what are you trying to hide from? did something happen? are you hurt?” isadora pats the empty spot beside her, not taking her eyes off of her friend. “we can hide out together. no one will ever find us again until we want to be found.”
“hear, hear!” he mimes raising a glass in cheers. the poor attempt to raise her spirits is second nature; he knows they’re both looking to wallow. “you’re damn good company too.” mack settles on the floor next to isadora. “if i say yes, will you beat up whoever wronged me?” the thought alone is enough to bring a hint of a smile to his face. realistically, however, mack is in the situation he is through no one’s fault but his own. “but nah, i’m alright. my heart hurts a bit, but i’ll get over it.” he pauses, taking a moment to consider the accuracy of his statement. “eventually. maybe.” there’s something reassuring in the fact that isa’s clearly as torn up about her own problems as he is about his; she’s right about misery loving company. but it’s the camaraderie that exists because of their shared suffering that gives him the courage to admit what’s going on with him. “i’m hiding from josie.” as he says it out loud, a wave of guilt washes over him. while he knows it’s for the best; he needs time to get his feelings under control and it’s not like josie’s seeking him out, but he’s still avoiding his best friend. his gaze is trained at the ceiling even though he can feel isadora’s eyes on him. “don’t people tell you that you should fall in love with your best friend? that’s shit advice. something tells me rejection wouldn’t feel this bad if she wasn’t my best friend.”

arah.
──── 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒖𝒅𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈, to act as if he wasn’t aware of the reason they broke up. as if he hadn’t crushed her heart in that music room. as if the words that he confirmed that day hadn’t caused the KRAKEN to rise from the depths of the ocean, hungry with vengeance. but vengeance was not something she chose to associate with cameron. only heart ache. even as she hears his laughter joined with josephine’s. despite how genuine his words sound, an obvious scoff flies through red parted lips. a roll of her eyes well in tow. ❛ you were SERIOUS about me ? ❜ this time she’s unable to hold in the humorless chuckle that emerges. a sinister meaning behind its contents. the more she stands in this hallway, the more caged in she feels. ❛ what did you do ? ❜ she takes a step toward him, until their chests were pressed against one another. until she could feel the way his chest moved with each breath. once upon a time, she would’ve found haven in his breaths, in the beating of his heart. but their PROXIMITY now only serves as a reminder to what they could’ve been. what they were. ❛ you fooled me. you had me believe what we had was a fairytale. one where i wasn’t the villain for once. ❜ this was a long time coming. ❛ you told everyone i was NOTHING to you. when you were my EVERYTHING. ❜ but such was arah’s way. the villain never won in these fables. there would never be any happy endings for her story.
as arah closes the distance between them, frustration bubbles within mack. he had never been anything but genuine with her, and it wasn’t good enough for her. he thought things were going great between them, then out of nowhere, she disappears. and he’s the one who played her? no, mack doesn’t want to fight, but he’s sick of not knowing what the fuck arah was talking about when referring to a relationship he was in. “when the fuck did i—” oh. the memory hits him hard; him brushing off the question when pushed to define what their relationship was. which arah asked him about that day in the music room. but she had said she was on the same page. she had another guy, a better guy lined up before she even asked how he felt. which, he would’ve told her, if she gave him the opportunity to explain why he hadn’t told anyone they were together; because he didn’t even know if they were. they had never discussed it. mack wants to throw her behavior in her face; how could she claim to have loved him when she chose trading up over hearing him out? “i fooled you? you’re the one that went—” he cuts himself off, refusing to twist the knife when he knows she’s hurting. mack exhales a sigh, taking a moment to reevaluate his approach to the conversation. and as he does, the pieces start to fall in place. it feels a lot like a punch in the gut. “you didn’t have another date, did you?”
