Tommy has never been to confession.

He's not a religious man. Sometimes, when he's flying early in the morning, when the sky is clear and the ocean looks like liquid silver, he's almost willing to believe in God. But the idea of sitting in a confessional and telling a faceless stranger all of his sins never appealed to him.

If God is out there he already knows everything Tommy did, and also which parts he regrets.

But something happened to him in the weeks between dumping Evan and agreeing to try again. Tommy can't explain it, but losing Evan cracked something open in his chest, and now it can't be closed again.

The words bleed out of him, quiet and painful in the middle of the night, when everything is dark and he's wrapped around Evan.

"I wrote so many messages, but I always deleted them. I wasn't sure you wanted to hear from me."

and

"Guys like me don't get big romantic happy endings."

and

"I should've told you instead of walking away."

and

"I don't deserve you."

At first Tommy thinks he just needs to get this - whatever this is - out of his system. They talked so much about where they went wrong and what contributed to their break-up, most of these confessions seem kind of moot. But the early days of their new relationship turn into weeks, and yet the words keep coming.

"Everybody else over there went through so much worse. I just flew planes and choppers most of the time; I feel like I have no right to call it PTSD."

and

"Loving you is terrifying. You could shatter me, and I think I'd let you."

and

"I'm not a good guy, Evan. I screwed up so much, with my family and in my relationships. I'm better at breaking things than fixing them."

and

"You're my last, even if I find it hard to trust that I'm yours too."

Sometimes Evan answers, sometimes he simply touches Tommy to show he heard the words. It still feels a lot like absolution.

What do you think goes through Tommy's mind the first time he lays eyes on Evan Buckley post-break-up?

Does his gaze linger too long before his brain catches up and offers an awkward greeting? Does his hand reach out on instinct to touch some piece of bare skin and then hastily retract itself towards the safety of his jacket pocket where no one can see it tight fisted and held back only by a prayer and the fear of Evan refusing his touch? Does he smile all wistful and broken at the man he clearly still loves but refuses to let himself be with? Does he wonder if there is someone new? Too afraid to ask out loud if another person has taken up residence in the spot he'd rushed into securing for himself in Evans heart before his wretched brain realised what he'd done and decided they needed to flee? Does he notice the longing in Evan Buckley's eyes as he too holds back a million things that all come back to the same plea-

Do you think they both think it and neither says it? Do you think they spend the night in their respective beds missing the warmth of the other and mourning the fact that they will never get it back?

Never considering that all they would ever have to do to get it back is ask...

Tommy is in bed, waiting for Eddie to finish in the bathroom. Today is one of those rare nights when both of them don't have a shift and get to actually spend it together.

Hearing the bathroom door closing, Tommy perks up, already imagining the things they are about to do.

Eddie enters the room in just his boxers and softly closes the door. Tommy starts to open his mouth with the intention of teasing and flirting with him but before he can, Eddie turns off the light, leaving the bedroom in complete darkness.

Oh, Tommy thinks, it's one of those nights.

Tommy lies on his side and patiently waits for Eddie to get in bed.

Early on in their relationship, they had learned that neither of them are good at talking about the important and hard stuff. One night, after Eddie had spent the entire day in a bad mood, making snide little comments and snapping at Tommy for whatever reason, Eddie had apologized just before they were about to fall asleep, with the room bathed in darkness, and talked about why he had acted like that during the day.

After that night, they had tried that method several times and it has always worked. Sometimes Tommy is being the one talking about whatever he's going through while Eddie listens patiently.

Once Eddie gets in bed, mirroring Tommy's position, Tommy asks in a soft voice, "What's wrong, baby?"

Eddie sighs and starts to slowly tell him what's been bothering him.

day 50 of @118dailydrabble word: recuperate, day 3 of @911-rarepair-week prompt: alternate universe | Ship: Lucy/Taylor | rating: T

Taylor opens the curtains of their hotel room and gazes at the cerulean waters of their beach resort.

“Rise and shine, my lovely wife,” she says, in a sing-song voice. “Hope you’ve recuperated—we’re going to Chichen Itza today.”

Lucy pulls a pillow over her head.

“How are you not hungover?” The pillow muffles her voice.

“I didn’t do tequila shots with the Canadians,” Taylor smiles. “Just because unlimited drinks are included—”

Lucy’s pillow hits Taylor in the head.

Taylor scoffs.

“Oh really? I'll get you.”

Lucy raises an eyebrow and smirks.

“Come get me, then.”

Taylor pins Lucy to the bed and kisses her.

“Got you.”

They don’t make it to Chichen Itza until the next day.
