Springtime for many of us is synonymous with starting new colonies and there are 3 ways that we can do it:
The most recommended method is to make or purchase a local nucleus colony, which typically includes five frames of brood, food stores, and a laying queen.
A second way is to see if you can capture a swarm from another colony. Read this article on how to catch a swarm of bees: https://bit.ly/CatchSwarmGuide.
One of the more popular means of starting a new colony is to do so with a commercially produced “package” of honey bees. A package consists of a cluster of workers and a newly mated queen (bred by a queen producer) housed in a wood and screen box to facilitate transport. However, a problem that is frequently encountered when installing packaged bees is the rejection of the caged queen.
How do you start new colonies in spring?

#BeekeepingTips Most beekeepers don’t peek inside their hives during the winter, because every time the hive is opened, warm air escapes and cold air enters. But there are several ways to check if the bees are still alive. If you tap gently on the hive, you should hear them buzzing when you are near the cluster. You can also use an infrared camera for more careful observations or a stethoscope (good for insulated hives). Check on them periodically. Happy beekeeping!

#BeekeepingTips A reduced hive entrance will keep the cold winds from entering the hives. We recommend you take a look at the entrance and see if bees have reduced their entrance naturally with propolis. If not, you can help them by adding small twigs or straws over the entrance.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿? Well, without fire or blankets, they form a cluster around their queen, to keep warm. The colder the temperatures get, the tighter the cluster will become. They stay inside the hive on cold days consuming stored honey to survive. And they flap their wings to create warmth - a honey bee can heat her body up to 111 ° Fahrenheit (43° Celsius).

Depending on where you live, bees can be kept in the city.  The trick is to keep them somewhere where they immediately have to fly up (like beside a six foot fence) so that they are not still at eye level when they wander into your neighbor’s yard.  Here are some tips to making your bee keeping experience cheaper.

The people of Mozowsze in Poland were the first  to pass laws regarding the protection of bees and beekeeping in 1401. Anyone caught damaging beehives or stealing honey was brought publicly to the site of the damage, disemboweled and left to die.
