It took Kevin a while to admit to himself that he had a problem. It took him even longer to tell any of his teammates and eventually his dad, who helped him find a sponsor. Now he’s three months sober. And for some reason what was more embarrassing than accepting help is how much satisfaction he got when he was handed that stupid sobriety chip.

He had been naive to think that one day couldn’t undo all that careful progress he had made. To think that his life didn’t hinge on a date on a calendar. All the foxes had days where their past crept up on them. He hadn’t missed the way Neil had tiptoed around that last Thursday in November. How he and Andrew had ordered takeout instead of spending Thanksgiving with his dad and Abby.

The point was that as much as Kevin liked to pretend he was immune to hard days, that his resolve was stronger than it used to be, the cracks always had a way of making themselves known.

Kevin wasn’t good.

Until he couldn’t.

Neil passed the ball. Kevin caught it, but his left arm spasmed. The stick dropped. His knees hit the floor a second later.
