Bracero!
The big 35...okay, not so big, but turning 35 is definitely a big deal when you realize you are five years away from 40. So, to celebrate this milestone, my main man and I decided to take in a little food and culture at a very trendy spot here in San Diego: Bracero! Cocina de Raiz.
When I think of Bracero, I think of lively, classic Mexican flavors, agriculture and roots. A tribute to the generation of Mexicans that cultivate our land in the Americas, Bracero turns simple dishes into a gastronomic experience. My writing will not do the dishes justice, you have to be there to know what I am talking about. All ages are welcome to enjoy a little bit of Mexican heaven in the city; you just have to bring an empty stomach and a full wallet to get your spice on!
Parking
Parking in Downtown San Diego requires a little patience. Almost everything is metered, so be prepared to pay if your going before 6pm. If your visiting after 6pm, your in luck, meter parking is free (don't quote me), but it may take you a while until you find a spot.
Ordering
Ordering couldn't be any easier. The waiter/waitress stops by to take your order and suggest the best dishes on the menu. Can't figure out what you want to drink? The waiter/waitress has it covered. After being unable to make up my mind (the drinks are that great for this Mexican girl), my waiter surprised me with a mojito-style drink that had a hint of heat a few seconds after drinking **heaven**. Virgin drinks upon request (I'm the DD, so no alcohol for me!).
Food
Where do I start! Updated classics, such as guacamole, are dressed up with black beans, garbanzos and crispy lentils. I despise lentils, but love theses! I ordered the Chilaquiles Rojos topped with an egg that oozes with yolk as soon as it's sliced, fresh cream and ripe avocado; I was not disappointed. The tortillas have the perfect amount of crisp and the sauce paints every tortilla piece with classic, spicy flavor and melted cheese. My husband gave the TJ Style Fish Ceviche Tostada and the Mexiterranean Gyro Style Adobada Taco a try. He's a picky eater, but he was very content after enjoying both dishes.
The beer, you ask? The Guadalupe Brewery El Vanillo - Cream Ale hit the spot. The abundance of craft beers will pair perfectly with your dish. And if your looking for spirits to pair with your magnificent plate, the list of shaken, stirred and wine selections will peak your interest or make you chuckle thanks to the names.
Service
A very welcoming atmosphere makes any dining experience fantastico! The staff greets you with a smile, even when they are in a rush, and they take the time to chat with you creating a very inviting environment.
Things to know when visiting:
Parking can be a bit of a nuisance. If you frequent downtown SD like I do, you know the feeling. You may need to walk a few, but it's worth the walk and anticipation. Pricing is fair and the mood is easy. There were even a few parents with small children having a good time. If you have a large family, the restaurant will accommodate (as we witnessed when we first walked in), so no one is left behind. Above all, relax and expect the spice and flavor; it's what makes the dishes taste like Mexico.
Buen Provecho!
