Celebration Farmworker Appreciation Day August 6, 2021
Every year you can see them as you drive by the fields, hundreds of strong backs laboring under the hot summer sun to bring in the harvest. Their work only happens during this time of year, and it is inevitable that many of these individuals are here only for this task, and set to return to their home country afterward. Farmworker Appreciation Day was made to help raise awareness of these often forgotten bastions of the economy, and remind us to be thankful for all they 19ve done.
History of Farmworker Appreciation Day
Farmworker Appreciation Day was created to be a moment of action and appreciation for these workers and to raise awareness of the issues they face every year. Farmworkers help keep the world fed and work what is considered to be one of the most dangerous jobs in the first world, and yet the often not protected by the same laws that protect other workers. This is due in part to their seasonal status and their tendency to be immigrant workers who return to their home country after the harvest is complete.
Some of the hazards they face in their line of work include exposure to pesticides and fertilizers that can be toxic and cause rashes or worse to those exposed to them and the perils of working under the punishing summer sun for hours on end without shade. In the course of their jobs they apply pesticides, dig in fertilized soil, and harvest those same plants they previously doused with poison. In such perilous conditions, it 19s not surprising that many die and fall sick each year from the hazards of their job.
How to celebrate Farmworker Appreciation Day
Celebrating Farmworker Appreciation Day is simple, and a great chance to share your generosity with those whose labor brings produce to your table. Drop by the places where they work with refreshments and supplies for them to enjoy on their breaks, and don 19t forget to bring easily portable water supplies! They may have water available, but not all of them have ways to carry it into the field. Also, to help protect them from the stress of working in the day 19s heat and the pesticides and fertilizers they encounter, bring long-sleeved shirts to help protect them! They 19ll appreciate it, and you 19ll feel good knowing you helped those who helped bring food to your table.

Now a public holiday in South Africa, referred to as Youth Day, it 19s also recognized as International Day of the African Child throughout the world. The day focuses attention on the barriers African children face in order to receive a quality education.

History of Applesauce Cake Day
Applesauce cake has been a popular part of diets from the colonial times, and recipes for it appeared in American cookbooks ever since, with a particular popularity in the 1900 19s-1950 19s. The primary ingredients are flour, sugar, and applesauce, with spices being added according to the taste of the one preparing it. That, in and of itself, is the basic applesauce cake, but from there the rest is open to your imagination, with everything from raisins to chopped walnuts being added by those who want a bit more pizzazz to the mix.
While applesauce cake describes a type of cake, it also describes a foundation of a whole variety of other cakes. Applesauce cake can be used to make cupcakes, an applesauce walnut coffee cake, and even bundt cakes. Applesauce Cake Day is your opportunity to let your creative baker run wild! They 19re even better with cream cheese frosting.
How to celebrate Applesauce Cake Day
The best way to celebrate Applesauce Cake Day is to bake an applesauce cake of your very own! Here we provide a very basic recipe ready for you to bake and then explore more options on your very own!
Applesauce Cake recipe
1/2c Unsalted Butter
1c Granulated Sugar
1c cool smooth applesauce
2c flour
1t Baking Soda
1t cinnamon
1/4t ground cloves
From here the recipe is very simple, you merely take the butter and cream it with the sugar, and then add the applesauce. Once it 19s well-creamed add in the flour, soda, and spices, folding them in. Butter and flour an 8in square pan and prepare your oven at 350F. Once it reaches the proper temperature, pour it into the pan and bake for 40 minutes. You can also add walnuts or raisins to this recipe, or get really creative and add the tang of cranberries for a holiday flavor! After it comes out of the oven, let it sit for a couple of days to enhance the flavor.
