final week in Madrid
over the past two weeks all of my Madrid family have been slowly leaving to head back to England for the summer. I was one of the last remaining and spent my last week trying to fit in as much as possible. We had a few more pool days with the boys cooking the BBQ for everyone, picnics in the parks and some lovely meals out.
This year has been the most amazing experience of my life, i will never forget anything i have been through here with some of the best people i have ever met. I am happy to have extended my portfolio majorly this year and am excited to sort through it properly with my traveling photographs.

Photo Espana
I have now been to 4 exhibitions within the PhotoEspana festival.
My favourite exhibition I went to had to be at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, Ana Casas Broda’s collection was called “kinderwunsch”.
Ana Casas Broda (Granada, 1965), who has intensely travelled through fields such as the family and memory, has thus baptised this project she has carried out over seven years and that has come to light in the form of a book and which she is now presenting in the form of an exhibition. In it she deals with maternity as an experience full of contradictions, through an exhaustive and deep exploration.
this exhibition was incredible to walk through, i spent a good hour or so ready through the story that went around the room, going in and out of the photographs. The story although not all continuous was amazing to read and really made me think about the deep and interesting story i need to have behind my FMP work for next year.

Coventry Degree Show
At the end of May i travelled back to England to see my peers work in their final degree show. I had seen the progress this group of photographer had gone through all year to make this exhibition one of a kind, and they really did. The work they had created throughout the year was incredible and I am so proud of them for what they have achieved. Since being at the exhibition we have heard that about 5 of them are graduating with firsts from Coventry University which is amazing. One of my favourite pieces of work from the exhibition was by Katherine Alcock, her video work focused on her nephew, it was beautifully created and pieced together.
Since the degree show this group have exhibited in London at the Free Range exhibition, which i have also heard went amazingly.

Barcelona
Early on the 21st of May Emily, Steph and I made our way to Barcelona for a long weekend away. Barcelona is somewhere I had visited before, but i just love the city so was happy to go back. We spent one day walking about the city visiting the sagrada famillia, park Guel and las ramblas. The next day we spent at the beach, it was amazing weather so we went for some food and just relaxed on the sand.
On the sunday I met up with my parents who were there for my mums birthday. we spent the first day walking around the gothic quarter and going to an amazing restaurant we had been recommended, which was amazing.
We booked a tour of the Sagrada Familia for the Monday, i had done this before a few years ago but the amount they have changed it since was incredible. We went at the perfect time to see the sun through the amazing stain glass windows, the whole church was lit up.
On our last evening we went on a spanish food experience night, there was about 20 of us who learnt to cook seafood paella from scratch. it was an incredible night, i also met people from around the world. it was great because two of the girls we met were travelling to Madrid after Barcelona so it gave me an opportunity to recommend places to go and things to see whilst they were here.

My actual Birthday
On my actual birthday Ryan and I just had a very relaxing day, we hadn’t had time to spend just the two of us so was the perfect way to spend my birthday. I woke up to some very creative pancakes in bed and opened my amazing presents from family and friends, one of which is going on holiday to Egypt in September which I am so excited for!
We spent the evening with a few of my friends in madrid having a few drinks and an amazing dinner cooked by Ryan with a little help from some of the boys! It was the perfect way to celebrate with some of my favourites.
On the thursday my parents and my brother and sister arrived for a long weekend, which was so nice. We spent our first day together on a bike tour around madrid, most of the places we visited I had been to before, however he took us down some back roads which I found very interesting and have been back to visit since. This was a fun few hours and a great way for my family to get to know Madrid a bit.
We Found a few amazing restaurants that I had never been to before in the centre, which I am definitely re-visiting before i leave Madrid in July. We spent the next few days that they were here just relaxing and visiting the park, some bars and a few other places that we had been told about to visit.
On they last day in Madrid My mum, sister and myself went to visit the Hammam Baths, this is something I had done once before and loved so thought it would be the perfect opportunity to go back. For them it was the best way to end a busy weekend away before heading back to work the next day! It was so nice to see my family after a few months.

My 21st- Frans Visit 9th- 14th April
Over the two weeks around my birthday I was very busy with people visiting from England and birthday celebrations here in Madrid.
On the 9th of April one of my friends from home Fran came to visit for a Long weekend, it was so nice to see her and we had lots to catch up on as I hadn’t seen her since christmas. We spent the first few days wondering around Madrid doing a lot of the touristy things including the Palace, Retiro Park and Plaza Mayor.
On saturday the 11th my boyfriend came out to visit, we had organised a party at my house for this evening with my madrid family to celebrate my birthday slightly early. This was such an amazing night and I was very spoilt with different presents and a yummy cake made by Meg and Emilie my housemates. It was so nice to see my friends from home and my friends out here getting on so well and im sure everyone had a really good night.
On the last day of Frans visit we went with 8 of the others to Casa De Campo and hired out little rowing boats for the afternoon. This was something I had wanted to do since moving to Madrid but had promised Ryan i would wait for him to come back out to visit before doing it. We spent the rest of the day relaxing in the sun with a few drinks and some great company! Im so glad Fran came out to visit as we then realised that we now wouldn’t see each other until September as she is spending the summer in America.

Easter
Over the easter holidays here a lot of our friends decided to go home to see family and friends, or go on a little holiday away. This meant that there was about 7 or 8 of us left behind to enjoy the amazing weather together. Throughout the week went into Madrid and went to a few different parks relaxing in the sun, and had many BBQ’s. These were our first of the year and was an amazing way to spend my week holiday.

17th- 21st March- Las Fallas
From the 17th- 21st Sam, Meg and I visited Valencia for the Las Fallas Festival, this is held once a year in commemoration of Saint Joseph. all the festivities that go on around the city are leading up to the 19th, the main day of the festival. On the first night we went to see the fireworks which went off at 1:30am, it was an amazing display, even though it was raining.
During the days we went to look at all the statues that had been created for the festival, these were set around the city waiting to be set on fire on the 19th. I couldn’t believe how much detail and creativity had been put into making them over the past year.
On the thursday night we went to look at the amazing light displays and watch the statues being set on fire. We watched one of the main statues being set alight and thought that would be the only one we would see. But as we headed back towards the flat we managed to catch another 4 statues on fire and 4 sets of fireworks.
I had visited Valencia before many years ago and there were two main things I could remember visiting, both of which I really wanted to re-visit. The arts and science buildings and the Food market, seeing both of these again after so many years was really interesting, and I was glad I had the opportunity.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty
I am very upset at the moment as there is an incredible exhibition that I would really like to go to in London however I really don’t know when or if I will get the opportunity.
Savage Beauty is being held at the V&A in London, and had its grand opening the other night, where models, fashion designers and close friends like Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham all attended.
Last night i watched a short 20 minute video on BBC iPlayer all about the exhibtion and it has just made me want to go even more. The amazing detail in every room to really show off just what McQueen was thinking whilst creating some of his most famous collections.
I just cant wait to go!

1st-8th March
Suddenly the weather has become so nice, going up to around 22/23 degrees, definitely something we aren't used to at the beginning of March. so we decided even though we had tonnes of work to do, we had to make the most of it on little days out.
we headed for El Rastro Market on the 1st, had a nice wonder around again buying a few little bits ( think this is definitely where I've bought most of my stuff over the year). We grabbed some food in the market and I took some photos on 35mm as i wondered around, I haven't had these developed yet but can’t wait to see them.
Unfortunately I had to spend most of the week writing my cultural journalism essay, however me and meg made a little set up so that we could work outside in the sun ( i got very burnt).
on the Sunday we decided to have a girls day and head to a park we had heard about. El Capricho park is based in the North East of Madrid and is located at the second to last stop on the green line. I will definitely have to visit again in the summer when they beautiful flowers i have seen in pictures will have grown more. I had such a nice day with all the girls we took picnics and walked around the park for most of the day. here are a few photographs I took on the day.
